Samsung Moment update

Sorry, folks. Looks like that Feb. 22 date we heard about for a supposed Android 2.1 update on the Samsung Moment ain't gonna happen. Sprint just tweeted the above, so we're going to have to wait things out a little longer. Stay tuned. [Twitter]

Is it just me or has the luster of 2.1 been dulled? I'd kill for some flash love though. Either way, good news for Sprint customers, hopefully they give us an actual date at some point :O

What the heck does that mean? Isn't it early 2nd qtr right now? Maybe I have my qtrs mixed up but come on!!!

I wish Sprint would get with it.

Sprint meant calendar 2010 not fiscal 2010. So second quarter would be April 1 to June 30.

Phone cycles are very short. By the time the update comes out consumers will be readying for the next round of phones.

Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T need to get on the ball. Software is whats going to drive demand for cell phone service. They make money when we don't upgrade our phones. Keeping the phone fresh with updates is important if they want to keep customers happy.

I for one may move to AT&T so that I can get the iPhone. Not that I want one, but the way the cell phone companies and phone makers conflicting goals slow the release of updates, Apple may be a breath of fresh air. Maybe Palm... I don't know yet. But I am pretty much done with sprint.

You don't want a Palm, if you're upset with Android, you're going to be extremely pissed with Palm.

First off, Sprint originally said 1st half 2010, so 2nd quarter is well within that frame. Also, to cjones, the second quarter starts April 1 and goes until the end of June.

Second off, I don't understand why Sprint is being held accountable for some unsubstantiated rumor from an unknown source. This is like you holding them accountable Friday when they don't release it Thursday because I am now claiming it will be released then.

They are still within the time frame specified, is it disappointing it isn't as soon as we all would like? Yes. But this is just like the insanity on the Palm Pre forums around this time last year when unofficial and unsubstantiated rumors would circulate from all sources about a potential release and then the bile would spew when it wasn't "met". Until July 1 rolls around Sprint isn't "late", again I am all for sooner rather than later but I can't go jumping off the deep end when they don't meet rumored release dates.

Can I suggest a bit more responsibility in reporting these unsupported rumors about release dates as facts. I mean the tone of the original article about the Feb 22 release potential seemed to have the balance, though this article makes that older article seem like Feb 22 was fact from on high which it clearly wasn't.

Wasn't the pre supposed to get 1.4 yesterday? And what? They didn't? Even though Precentral commented about it months ago, their website was quiet yesterday.

It is not sprint fault here, think about it, you really think that google will let other device not name nexus one get this update? i think we will see an update when their nexus one get the 2.2 or whatever the next software is going to be call, that is my take on this one my friends......

I'd rather they wait to update the phone until the update is ready, rather than send something out that is all buggy. I love my Moment with Android 1.5, and so I'm not that worried about this "delay" especially when it's not really even a delay! :-)

Lol, you must not have the issues the Hero has with 1.5.

Laggy as all get out
Exchange Sync buggy
Can't type without it lagging and screwing up words in every sentence
Sometimes a locked phone won't send/receive texts until you unlock the phone (that is VERY annoying)
Memory issues causing horrible lagging

Basically, this is the laggiest phone I've ever had. Ever. And this is my third one and I've even rooted it and installed other ROMs on it. Still laggy as can be.

My God yes the Moment has the same problems. I don't blame Sprint for the bad date release, however I will NEVER understand why the "state of the art" Samsung Moment was built with the 1.5 Firmware??? Thats like building a state of the art computer with a DOS operating system. Samsung is the new Toyota.

Even worse, Samsung recognizes that they made a great phone with a garbage operating system.. and "announce" that they will correct it by offering the 2.1 upgrade.. but then make us all wait for it and render the "market" on the phone virtually usesless until we get the 2.1 upgrade (Android is no longer supporting new applications on the 1.5 firmware, so we dump money into this great new phone but can't download a single new application until the new firmware is released).

I therefore blame Samsung, Sprint AND Android for not working together to correct this mess.

"I love my new Samsung Moment with my 1.5 market." I just threw up in my mouth.

"Android is no longer supporting new applications on the 1.5 firmware"

Uh, source for this? The Android SDK still lets you develop for Android 1.0 if you really want to, and I really doubt Google is stopping new apps from being loaded in the market.

The problem as I see it is really HTC and their Sense UI stuff. I think for my next phone I'll try to get something with a bog-standard Android install, because it sucks having to wait for Google to update the OS and then wait again for a third-party UI vendor to get their code tested and installed on the new OS. There's no technical reason the Hero can't run Android 2.1 right now, it's just development and testing time at HTC that's the issue.

This is why I got the Pre. I would think a phone that came out in October could have been updated by now. Unfortunately, the way android and its multiple UIs are set up, it is hard to push out quick and gradual updates.

Apple and Palm are using a more closed system that allows the gradual upgrade approach. It seams Apples upgrades are more often then not aimed at stopping the end user from doing something, while Palm continues to the end user experience better.

I think Palm is the clear winner in the best user experience. Unfortunately they are a bankrupt company just barely hanging on for dear life. I hope the come back and bring the best mobile OS to the world.

Palm should get the hardware portion right, then talk.

The problem with this approach, is that the Pre, even after all it's OS updates, still doesn't offer the flexibility and power of Android. Palm's issued multiple updates because they HAD to. The initial release was a joke, and 1.3.5 is still pretty weak. Maybe by 1.5 they'll catch up.

Palm has dropped the ball with he pre and is holding on for dear life and don't realize it yet....people don't even talk about webos anymore other than palm users. and it is probably the best mobile os out right now.

I dont know how many times in the past 2-3 weeks on podcast and websites have I heard that android was the only phoneos with multi-tasking.

sprint is lagging far behind...mainly because they put all of their eggs in palms basket and palm isn't delivering. now they are stuck with a buggy samsung moment, and a buggy htc hero with outdated android OS's....every other cell company has a premier phone

att= iphone
tmobile = nexus
verizon = moto droid

sprint is lacking and nothing (officially) on the horizon.

and why are there still new android phone announcements with 1.5-1.6, this is rediculous

I myself am all for the update, but by the time they push this out they will probably have version 3 out putting us behind the rest of the phones yet again. It is bad enough they release the phone with 1.5 when 1.6 came out not even a week later. I mean come on.

I don't think that the current Hero OS is bad at all. I don't really experience too much lag in the OS. I would like to see what new features come with the 2.1 update, but the device Is great the way it is. I have no concerns and will be waiting patiently for the update

I don't get any of these issues either (and for you folks who do, I recommend giving Fresh ROM and Handcent SMS a try), but it's been frustrating watching new apps come out and require 1.6 or better (in particular, the turn-by-turn driving stuff in Google Maps). The rest of the OS updates from 1.5 to 2.1 don't seem all that compelling to me, but when new apps get released that you can't run because the phone you bought less than a year ago won't support them, it's not a great feeling.

Man, Sprint can't do anything right. They'll lose another 50,000 customers to Verizon because they're tired of waiting for Sprint get some decent phones with up to date OSs. It used to be Verizon that had old, boring phones, but the tables have turned. Every carrier but Sprint is announcing new Android phones. At this rate, they'll be bankrupt by the end of the year.

By the time these clowns actually get around to releasing the update the other providers will have already released Android 3.0.

I'm getting so tired of sprint first off i had to go to another store just to get a better price on my samsung moment cause the sprint stories cost so much more and they want you to mail in your rebate while other stores are giving instant rebates and now they are so far behind in updating the OS to 2.1 and you also have to go to the store or install your own firmware update i think i might just switch providers when my contract is up

if sprint is going to charge so much for there plans they should have the best OS out

Wow... just think - all of you were just making phone calls and checking email with an occasional pic mail or video a year ago and now you can "almost" give up your laptop using a droid - 1.5, 1.6 - 2, 2.1...? Quit whinning. Technology takes time and I can't wait for my update either - but I am - and I'd rather have it right the first time than some quick buggy firmware that's stamped 2.1. My Moment works like a charm and I'm on it right now - writing this to whomever wants to read it. Why did you buy a droid that wasn't 2.1? I knew what I was getting into - I did my homework... This phone is fast and it rocks... so well it's hard to put it down! Android is the new "black" and who would ever want an iphone or AT & T for that matter after using one... Man up, crybaby!
