What you need to know

  • A tipster claims that Google is working on a "try new features" trial environment for its Maps app, which lets users test upcoming additions.
  • The rumors add that this trial could include an "Ask Maps" button, which seemingly leverages Gemini quite heavily.
  • Google has continued to roll out AI features in Maps, such as one that brought in Gemini for improved review summaries, smart suggestions, and more.

There's a report that Google Maps is preparing to introduce a test environment that will let users glimpse what's new.

Posted on X earlier today (Feb 10), tipster AssembleDebug claims that Google Maps will soon roll out a "Try new features" section within the app. The report suggests that this will let users "try new features before they are widely rolled out." It's not clear when we can expect this to arrive; however, rumors add that the first feature could be a test for "Ask Maps." In conjunction with Android Authority, the tipster reports that the app could get an "Ask Maps" button right beneath the search bar.

This colorful Gemini-esque button opens a very AI chatbot-style sub-menu in the app.

Supposedly, the tipster's dive into the app's recent version suggests Ask Maps will let users "turn ideas into adventures." It makes one think about having an idea for a trip, but not being sure about how to go about it. Perhaps, Google Maps' leverage of Gemini will help users get this done by planning routes, places to eat, and visit, and much more.

Unfortunately, all we have is our speculation, as the tipster states not much was moving in this alleged discovery within the app's code. AssembleDebug claims this feature's test could arrive "soon." We'll just have to wait and see.

AI continues to arrive in Maps

Google's really started focusing on the AI capabilities of Maps in recent major updates, such as one that brought Gemini-curated suggestions to the app. If you're looking for something to do one evening with friends, Google Maps might offer up live music. Additionally, Google rolled out better smart suggestions, quicker review summaries, and answers (of course), fueled by Gemini.

The company continued to advance its Maps AI by slowly phasing out the Assistant for Gemini completely. With Gemini, users would find improved voice command understanding for route changes and better answers for questions regarding the weather and nearby places.

Android Central's Take

Bringing more AI into Google Maps feels like it can only be a good thing—and better, too. It's the utility aspect of Gemini that is seemingly shifting Google Maps into a better version of itself. With Ask Maps rumored now, it sounds like the company is rolling everything into one convenient place. Users might be able to plan out entire trips within Maps and see that route come to life without having to switch apps. One can only hope; and if this rumor is correct, we might see it on our phones soon.
