This secure email service just gave me a real reason to ditch Gmail
Proton wants to make ditching Gmail less painful.
What you need to know
- Proton Mail can now pull Gmail emails directly into the app without needing to open Gmail separately.
- Users can send emails using their Gmail address directly from Proton Mail after linking accounts.
- Proton says the feature strips trackers and ads from emails for a more private inbox experience.
Proton is making it much easier for Gmail users to slowly move away from Google's email ecosystem without completely cutting ties.
One of the biggest reasons I haven't been able to leave Gmail behind is that my Gmail address is tied to almost everything. Every contact I know has it, most of my accounts are linked to it, and honestly, my reliance on Google's ecosystem is still pretty deep. But it looks like Proton is at least trying to solve part of that problem.
The company has announced a new feature that lets users connect their Gmail account directly inside Proton Mail. Once connected, users can receive Gmail emails inside Proton Mail and even send emails using their Gmail address without needing to open the Gmail app itself.
The setup process also looks fairly simple. Users just need to head into the Import via Easy Switch section inside Proton Mail settings and connect their Gmail account. Proton says that connecting Gmail does not give Google access to the user's Proton Mail inbox.
Proton is also heavily leaning into the anti-Google angle here. The company says Proton Mail strips trackers, ads, and spam from incoming emails, offering a more privacy-focused experience compared to Gmail, which still relies heavily on user data for advertising.
Interestingly, Proton also claims that emails exchanged between Gmail accounts connected through Proton can become end-to-end encrypted when both users are using Proton Mail. That means Google would no longer be able to use things like email activity and engagement patterns to build advertising profiles around those interactions.
That said, Proton is also being pretty upfront that this is more of a transition tool than a complete privacy fix. The company notes that using Gmail through Proton Mail doesn't fully solve Gmail's long-standing privacy concerns. Google can still technically access emails that land in Gmail inboxes, even if those messages are being viewed through Proton Mail afterward.

If you want to try the feature yourself, Proton says the rollout is starting gradually for Proton Mail users beginning now.
Android Central's Take
Proton finally seems to understand that convenience matters just as much as privacy. I know a lot of people who have wanted to leave Gmail for years, but the migration process has always felt unnecessarily clumsy. It seems like this might finally change it.
