Weather Underground for Android

Weather Underground for Android

Weather Underground has long been a go-to source for weather information online. And now, finally, we have a proper Weather Underground Android app.

The main view is a nicely laid out three-panel screen.  The top section shows the current temperature, "feels like" temp, wind speed and direction, humidity and a thumbnail image of what it's like outside. Tap it and you'll get the current dewpoint, visibility, pressure (in inches), wind gusts, GPS coordinates, and when the conditions were last updated. Tap it a third time and you'll get a brief forecast for the rest of the week.

The second section, in the middle of the screen, shows three days at a glance, with high/low temperatures and chance of precipitation. You can swipe to get the next three days. Tap a day to get the hourly forecast.

And the bottom section of the main view, taking up a little less than half of the entire screen, is a Google map with nearby personal weather stations reporting the current temperature. Tap the map, and it goes to a full-screen version with radar laid on top. You can adjust the overlays of the "WunderMap," toggling storm tracks, satellite, visible satellite, temperatures, cameras and animation.

Other options include making locations as favorites, seeing sever weather alerts for a location, and signing into your Weather Underground account.

All in all, the Weather Underground app continues Wunderground's penchant for excellent weather information, and it works well enough on Android smartphones and tablets. But the app's animations are fairly laggy, and it doesn't yet have a home screen widget. And while we're just starting the winter season, we'd hope to see a dedicated tropical weather section (if not an entire app from Wunderground) by the start of hurricane season June 1. But, hey, the app's free, and it's quickly found a place on our phones.

We've got download links, hands-on video and more screen shots after the break.

Ashley Madison for Android: A bad app for doing bad things

34

Ashley Madison

It's tough to listen to satellite radio these days without hearing an advertisement for Ashley Madison, an online community that boasts having more than 12 million anonymous members looking for some degree of companionship. The difference between Ashley Madison and other dating sites is it openly caters to people looking to have discreet affairs.

I'm happily married, and having an affair with someone online isn't exactly on my agenda anytime soon, much to the relief of my wife and kids. But I also can't escape those damn commercials. And since Ashley Madison has an Android application, I figured it was in my professional duty to check it out. A few thoughts, after the break.

NORAD tracks Santa and you can, too, with the official app

3

Track Santa

Norad tracking Santa started back in 1955, pretty much by accident when a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement accidentally printed the number to the Continental Air Defense Command center as the number to call in order to get in touch with Santa. Ever since then the Continental Air Defense Command center now known as NORAD has been tracking Santa every Christmas creating a tradition for many folks.

This year, a new Santa tracking app has been released and is now ready for download. With it, you can track Santa's progress as he travels across the world delivering presents to good boys and girls.

Plus, you can play the included Elf Toss game that is actually quite fun. You have to help the Elf's toss presents to Santa all while avoiding the holes in the ice -- otherwise, you may lose some presents and they won't make their way. Just remember -- Santa hasn't left the North Pole yet but when he does, this app will let you know. Download is past the break for you all.

And on Christmas Eve, you also can search for "Santa" in Google Maps and track that way.

Shadowgun

The good news: NVIDIA's shouting from the rooftops that the game Shadowgun (read our review) has been updated and optimized for Tegra 3 devices. And, the bad news: There's only one Tegra 3 device available today, and it's pretty hard to come by. But if you're lucky enough to actually have an ASUS Transformer Prime (again, check out our full review), you've gotta check this one out.

We've got some Tegra 3 Shadowgun demo video after the break. Check it.

GoHow Airport a decent free option for air travelers

2

GoHow Airport

If you're hopping on a plane today for the holidays, there's a new free travel app that's worth giving a look. GoHow Airport is a simple app that gives you information on a score of airports. You get an overview, list of shops, and info on food and drinks, services, parking and ground transportation. There's also a basic internal layout of the airport, and city weather info. The interesting thing here is that the airports themselves partner with Gohow to ensure the latest up-to-date information.

Also, GoHow Airport serves as a flight and trip itinerary manager. It's got listings for dozens and dozens of airports, and the flight listings are simple but work as advertised.

We're not going to call GoHow Airport our favorite travel app. But it's got a wealth of airport information that others don't. And, best of all, it's free. We've got screenshots and download links after the break.

Don't forget to download App Inventor projects before Dec. 31

App Inventor code download

Google's App Inventor is dead, long live MIT's App Inventor!

A final notice everyone -- if you have some projects sitting around in App Inventor, and would like to keep them, either for some crazy time-capsule experiment or in the hopes of migrating them to MIT's App Inventor project, you've only got a handful of days left.  Come December 31, Google will be taking the whole kit and caboodle offline, and projects that haven't been downloaded are lost forever.

Getting them is easy, just log into appinventorbeta.com and hit the "Download All Projects" button as shown above.  Keep them safe, and when MIT gets things back up and running in 2012, you're ready to go.  For more information about MIT's implementation, have a look at their Learning Center.
