Epic 4G Touch gets Touchstone mod

10

Getting a Touchstone mod is a sort of smartphone rite of passage. If someone's going to take enough time and effort to hack Palm's inductive charger onto the phone, it's a sure sign it's a winner. We've previously seen it on the Epic 4G and EVO 4G, and such is the case with the Epic 4G Touch. Android Central Forums member darrenf has modded his E4GT to work with the Touchstone.

A couple of caveats, of course. This requires some fairly major surgey. And beacuse of the Epic 4G Touch's tight fit, the inductive coil is actually on the outside of the battery cover, so it'll need some cosmetic surgery as well. But, damn it, that looks pretty sweet.

Check out the excellent walkthrough and instructions at the link below.

Notion Ink CEO 'confirms' Ice Cream Sandwich in Oct., OMAP as reference platform; says Adam will update in Nov.

75

The CEO of Notion Ink, Rohan Shravan, has "outed" some more news about the Ice Cream Sandwich release.  Yes, this is the same fellow who told us about Gingerbread a few days in advance last time around (which is why we looked twice).  In a post at the Notion Ink blog about plans to improve the graphics performance of the Adam, Shravan says a couple really interesting things -- Google will be releasing Ice Cream Sandwich in late October, OMAP devices will be the preferred platform (and receive the update before Tegra devices), and the Notion Ink will have the Adam updated by November.

Additionally, the folks at Phone Arena have confirmed with Shravan that Google has already supplied OEMs with Ice Cream Sandwich, and that Notion Ink is not one of the manufacturers to be seeded with an early release of the source code.

We're still going to be on the lookout for something a bit more official, and none of this news is really surprising -- it has been regurgitated across the Internet for the past few months.  We'll see Ice Cream Sandwich when it's ready, and if that means next month none of us will be complaining.

Best Buy makes good after customer's already opened Epic 4G Touch gives him the bird

169

Android Central Forums member remii picked up his shiny new Samsung Galaxy S II Sprint Epic 4G Touch (hereafter referred to as the SGSIIE4GT for short) at a Best Buy in Riverside, Calif., only to find that it wasn't quite as pristine as you might expect, with the box apparently already opened and the phone's camera having been ... tested. Here's the story in remii's words:

So I walked into Best Buy today to get my Epic 4G Touch, and I go to play with it as the rep finishes my paperwork, and look what I find on it that Best Buy decided to throw in as a bonus!

I was pretty upset. There was another one as well of a random Sprint fixture. Also before I even got the phone in my hand the reps were handing the phone off to each other to check it out. They didn't even know anything about it nor of its release this morning.

... I have to admit the camera quality is pretty nice, lol. But, yeah, I spoke to their manager and he just made excuses. "When we get in new devices the techs like to open them up and explore them a bit" was his reasoning. I then asked why would there be such a vulgar photo on my phone then and he went on to say that they should have deleted it before it was sold. Awesome.

We're willing to bet that's not official Best Buy policy (or anyone else's, for that matter). And while we'd agree that the photos left on the phone aren't all that offensive, but that's not really the point. If we're buying a brand-new phone, we'd prefer that store reps not "play" with it first, ya know? There's probably no need to keep things as sterile as to clearly open the box in plain sight of God and the customer, but just don't "play" with what we're about to buy, m'kay?

As for remii and his almost-new SGSIIE4GT? Hit the break to see how things turned out.

Reminder: Enter to win a Motorola Atrix 4G from Nvidia and Android Central [contest]

171

The Motorola Atrix 4G is one of the first Android "superphones" to use the Tegra 2 chip, as well as the first dual-core device to hit AT&T here in the states.  To go with the performance of that Tegra CPU, Motorola threw in a full Gigabyte of RAM, and a 4-inch qHD display.  When we first looked at it back in March, we knew the phone had huge potential, and once Google and Motorola got together and sent some tasty Gingerbread out to the Atrix, it became one of the best phones available for power users.  With the latest software, this thing is a beast.  And you still have a chance to win one of your own in Nvidia and Android Central's Tegra Madness giveaway!

It's easy, just hit the forums and drop a note in the contest thread, and you're entered.  Each contest runs for 24 hours (midnight to midnight, Eastern Time), and we'll pick the winner at random, then announce them all in one big blog post next Sunday (Sep. 18).  Good luck to all, and be sure to enter all week!

Announcing the winners of the Waze and Android Central device giveaways

9

A couple weeks back the good folks at Waze got together with us and had a blow-out of a contest.  The huge list of prizes -- tablets, and the best smartphones on the planet -- got everyone excited, and now it's time for seven folks to get even more excited, as we present the winners.  Playing was fun for all, and yours truly discovered a great app with Waze for Android, but the following folks get the added pleasure of some new Android gear to add to their experience:

Congrats ladies and gents!  The folks at Waze will be in touch shortly, via the contact information you provided through the app.  They just shared the winners with us so we could congratulate you ourselves.  Have fun with your new Android devices, and be sure to use 'em to munch some Androids while you're out and about.  Let's all wish them well in the comments guys.  And once again, thanks to Waze for the awesome contest!

Samsung Illusion for Verizon appears on Flickr

4

Although the Samsung Illusion name has been tossed around before on some road maps there was never an official announcement made for the device. Now, thanks to a little slip up from Samsung on Flickr, we're getting a good look at a 3G-only device, but not much else. Specs seem to still be missing for the information but those will come eventually. What we do know though, is that the device is eco-friendly (which we've also seen in the Samsung Replenish):

Samsung mobile phones have been awarded a "green" certificate by one of the most reliable establishment in the US. Samsung announced on September 15 that its two mobile phone models including Ever Green phone (SGH-A667) and Illusion phone (SCH-I110) won a certificate of SPC (Sustainable Product Certification) by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in the US, an independent product safety certification organization, expanding its "green" phone line-up into three which also include Replenish (SPH-M580).

Yeah, we know -- not much to go on, but it's interesting that's for sure. What do you all think? A low powered budget device running an 800MHz processor or does it have something a little more beefier under the hood?

Samsung Galaxy S II Sprint Epic 4G Touch now available online from Sprint

57

Despite having the longest name in smartphone history, the Samsung Galaxy S II Sprint Epic 4G Touch is the first of the Galaxy S II devices to reach the United States -- you can hit up Sprint online and order one right now.  It's going to set you back $199.99 and a two year agreement (or $499.99 if you buy it outright), but for that money you're getting 1.2GHz of dual-core, and 4.52 inches of Super AMOLED Plus loving.  Toss in Sprint's Wimax 4G, and an all new version of TouchWiz, and there's a lot there to get excited over.

Settle in, dust off your credit card, and hit up Sprint -- then drop in the forums to spread the good word.  Things are gonna get busy in there I think!

Reminder: Enter to win a T-Mobile G2X from Nvidia and Android Central [contest]

102

The T-Mobile G2X is one of the original dual-core monsters.  The specs are great -- a Tegra 2 power plant, 4-inch IPS display, HDMI out, and easy to hack the daylights out of.  Now that Gingerbread has shown up for it, it's a beast.  Yes, I'm a bit biased -- I use one myself for my Tegra Zone gaming addiction (ZOMG Fruit Ninja THD).  And you can enter to win one in Nvidia and Android Central's Tegra Madness giveaway!

Winning one is easy, just hit the forums and drop a note in the contest thread, and you're entered.  Each contest runs for 24 hours (midnight to midnight, Eastern Time), and we'll pick the winner at random, then announce them all in one big blog post next Sunday (Sep. 18).  Good luck to all, and be sure to enter all week!
