Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails fame, just got his band's app rejected from the iPhone App Store. Surprising? Not so much because if you've been following iPhone app news over at our sister-site The iPhone Blog you would know that Apple has a completely inane app approval process that sometimes reject applications that are perfectly worthy and approve applications that are inane themselves.

Here's what Trent has to say about the iPhone and the rest of the smartphone industry (Android-included):

The iPhone is THE most elegant, modern smartphone at this point in time and it’s perfect for what we want to do with the NIN app - except for the ludicrous approval process, and that’s what I want to draw attention to. Android is cool, but nobody has an Android phone. Blackberry is OK but the hardware is inconsistent and WinMo straight-up sucks balls. If Apple doesn’t get it together, we will most certainly make it available to the jailbreak community. I didn’t invest in this app to see it languish on the sidelines from an idiotic policy while this tour is in full swing.

What Trent says is pretty much spot-on to how most people feel about the smartphone landscape. So yeah, us Android nerds are cool but we need more devices, more users, more everything to throw our weight towards Android and make it a major playor. And hey Trent, if you want to port the app over Android we'd love to download it via Android Market. No watchdog necessary.

It's a shame Trent feels that Android isn't worth his time, since his app is free. He spent $100k of his own money on that app, and if Apple are gonna dick him around like that, then by ignoring the other options, he's just wasting his own money. It's too easy and logical to just jump on the iPhone band wagon, but it's just plain stupid to sit there and bitch and let Apple mess you around. It's chicken and the egg; these devs need to get behind Android in the first place. There's enough of us paying Android users to warrant a $100k app, surely? There's 100,000 of us here in the UK alone. Get off the pot or piss, Trent. Open the app to jailbreakers, port it to Android, stfu complaining, and stop letting Apple rule the market with their Nazi regime! For all his vehemence about the record label business, he's sure as hell being a pussy about this.

I agree. Get off the pot or piss. However someone or somebody should get through to apple as soon as possible. investing time and money on app development to only be rejected is asinine. Note to Apple get off your high f'n horse. Put in a age protection code before download and state they are not liable for any damage from app to yougsters or people offended. Enough is enough.

Apparently, last I heard, there were a million of us. Guess that's not a lot. :/

fnerg says:

A million isn't a lot comparatively. The smartphone market is huge, Apple's got most of it, and Android is in the "other" bucket.

There are some good reasons for it. The G1's underpowered, and not having multitouch is big. I love Android because I like Java better than Obj-C, I like the physical keyboard, and I like that if I come up with a cool app, I can share it without having to go through a lot of rigamarole.

Unfortunately, these reasons don't matter to the vast majority of users out there, so until Android gets put on better devices, and gets some upgrades, it's gonna remain in the other bucket.
