Google Updates

Wednesday means Google update day

Google has pushed out a few updates today, most of them very minor. This usually happens every Wednesday, and everyone here at AC starts grabbing phones and tablets to see what is new and how it's different.

Nothing big happened so far today, have a look to see which app updates you should be on the lookout for.

  • Google Translate recieved an update to enable handwriting support for 13 new languages — Arabic, Bosnian, Cebuano, Gujarati, Hmong, Kannada, Maltese, Mongolian, Persian, Punjabi, Somali, Tamil, and Telugu.
  • YouTube let the dogs out, but the "real" update will allow you to reply to comments from the app.
  • Maps was updated with bug fixes and upcoming events when you search out a place by name.
  • Chromecast was updated with bug fixes, and the settings were moved into the side menu as we've seen with other Google applications.
  • Chrome Beta just got some bug fixes and the usual stability improvements.
  • Wallet was covered earlier, but it's in this list for completeness. Have a click to see the big changes.

Google pushes minor updates to a handful of apps

YouTube force closes on stock 4.4.2 on my Nexus 5. Ugh. Anyone else facing similar issues? :)

This doesn't sound good. Uninstalling the update resolves the issue for me, but that's not really a solution :)

Same here! Tried clearing app data to no avail. Only solution is to uninstall updates. Sounds like they really screwed the pooch on this one (sorry, I'm watching CSI so the pun just came naturally).

Ok, maybe my earlier comment wasn't fair to Google. Are you running some sort of ad blocker (such as the YouTube AdAway module for Xposed Framework) if so, disable or uninstall that and YouTube should work again.

I got an update for Search that still had a lot of debugging options that I've never seen before enabled.... Another alpha version that shouldn't be live, or did I just enable something by accident?

since they removed search nearby, the maps application is crap. It used to be my companion in my business and leisure travel trips. Driving in the interstate, it was easy to find restaurants, distances, and directions just by reading the list. I uninstalled the app for three weeks and I didn't even remember the app wasn't there.[1-25-false]
Long list why the search nearby function is needed back

I hold off on updates till after I read about what was broken in the process ;)

If you had sideloaded the YouTube app on a kindle fire and updated it, the new update breaks compatibility because it is relying g on google frameworks to work now
