With 24 hours to go, LeVar Burton's Reading Rainbow Kickstarter campaign is drawing to a close, has set a record for the number of backers (and still climbing at more than 97,000 as of this writing) — and is nearing its $5 million goal. More rewards have been added (including a sweet Reading Rainbow Live with some of the cast of BSG), and the clock's ticking.

A quick reminder that should the $5 million goal be reached, we'll finally get a proper Android app. My kids have loved the iOS version, but c'mon. Android's where it's at, right? If you haven't yet pledged, we encourage you to do so.

4.9 million can't even get an Android app??

lol. A goal's a goal! Don't want folks to stop giving, do we?

dwd3885 says:

We do want to give and the app is on Amazon. So this must be a little different.

I already kicked in twice....granted it was not a ton of money but it is a great cause.

I might skip the beer money tonight and throw in some again.

If you would have donated one dollar, that's still doing a bunch of good.

You da real MVP. In all seriousness awesome, i also backed it. Everyone should.

As respectful as one can possibly say this: What the hell do they need THAT much money for?

I just read what's involved and its more than just an app. For $5m I'd still like to think it makes its way into more than 7500+ classrooms though. Still a good cause.

Ara Wagoner says:

Those are the classrooms it makes it into for FREE. It wants other schools that actually have money to pay for Reading Rainbow in the classroom.

Video says its not for just an android app but across all mobile device platforms including the xbox console and actual in class programs providing either free books or tablets to read books on.

Unfortunately if our government did what its supposed to do things like this would be a necessity.

Thank you greedy, money hungry, rich people tax break giving officials. The rest of us appreciate bending over....

Umm i thought the 5 mill already hit with Seth McFarlanes contribution.

BREAKING NEWS: Seth MacFarlane will now match the next $1M of pledges, starting at $4M. PLEDGE NOW!

Anyway...the more the better/

dragonsamus says:

Seth is only going to donate 1 million if it reaches the 5 million mark.

I helped out by making a pledge. Wish I knew about this sooner. Posted on Facebook so hopefully some of my friends help too before its too late.

Zarabadoo says:

He will actually match the amount over 4 million up to 1 million. So with that it is at about the 5.6 million mark. Still worth tossing some cash at as your donation is now worth double.

Ara Wagoner says:

He's kicking in his money AFTER the kickstarter closes so that money doesn't got towards the stretch goal.

c0ldburn3r says:

Bam donated. With Seth MacFarlane doubling his pledge this should meet that goal.

But if I don't know how to read, how will I know which app to open to get to Reading Rainbow? o_0

Jesus!!! Dude, you owe me a drink! Where's the napkins?! it's all over my monitor!

This is a great cause. I put in $500 on my own just because I grew up with the show and absolutely would love to have my kids get to do the same.

In Austin, Texas we did a Bowl-a-Thon and raised over $200.00. I know that may not be much, but the bowl-a-thon was put together as we were casually bowling at the alley so it was pretty awesome. Big shout to Dart Bowl in Austin, Texas for letting us do this!!!

Every dollar helps. So 200 dollars helps a ton.

I was part of a failed kickstarter that was funded fully but never delivered on the goods so I will never support one again. However, I will buy the app if/when it is released.

Ara Wagoner says:

Reading Rainbow is a subscription-based app, so that's actually smarter than you'd think.

almath says:

Loved Reading Rainbow, is that Lori Beth Denberg?

zhecht says:

I loved Reading Rainbow as a kid, but I don't get why people are so eager to throw money at a for-profit corporation to build a subscription-based app. This isn't like the old show which was freely available to anyone with a TV, and all those classrooms that are supposedly being helped by this kickstarter are only getting a 1-year subscription.

Nostalgia, my friend, nostalgia. A lot of us who were kids in the '80s still pine for our old Transformers, My Little Pony, and 8-bit video game collections alongside LeVar Burton's groundbreaking show.
