Nexus 5

The link is dead(ish) now, but there it is, folks. The Nexus 5, for $349.

The tag line, as you can see, reads:

"Capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways. Starting at $349."

That's a pretty good sign that we'll see more than one SKU (aka retail version), meaning we'll (obviously) see more than one storage size. The defunct link took us to a 16-gigabyte version, so that's a pretty good starting point. The URL also points to a "black" version — a pretty good indication we might see other colors as well. Figure white, of course.

Thanks, @BWFfeldy!

the hope will be that the nexus 5 will offer all the lte bands needed to work on at&t, tmobile, and even verizon. more importantly, you can purchase at full price from the google play store.

At least on the versions that went through the FCC so far, there's no Verizon support. And even if it did, as we see with the Nexus 7 LTE, Verizon won't exactly be happy to let you on their network.

I get to retire my handicapped Sprint Galaxy Nexus stuck on 4.2 (I know I can root and have, just prefer Google's stock offering) adios Sprint. Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that kitkat bar!

Posted via Android Central App

Esteban4u says:

Really, you have issues with the on screen buttons? They get out of the way when it's important, like when you watch videos , play games and listen to music. What you really should take issue is with all that gimmicky TouchWiz software running on that GS4, slowing it down and never having the latest and greatest OS from Google.

MERCDROID says:

4.96-inch, 1080p screen, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 2300mah/??? battery, and 16GB/32GB of storage.

Esteban4u says:

32GB may also have a 3000Mah battery as well

Lol. Keep dreamin'.

Esteban4u says:

I can only hope that the mass-exodus of Android enthusiasts, massive influx of buyers of this device and critiques from all the major tech blogs of why Verizon isn't carrying it, puts pressure on Verizon to finally allow/request Google to have this device on their network. I'll wait 'till Dec, but after that I won't wait any longer. My trusty GNex has served me well, but alas, I'm tired of having to flash ROMs on it to keep it's OS current.

UndeadNexus says:

What if Google won't let them? They did ruin the Galaxy Nexus. They might do it again. Unless Verizon commits its time on the Nexus 5 instead of the Droid line, it probably wont happen.

drokssilva says:

Well, they could force Verizon to do better. Google has more then enough resources.

Posted inside a time machine 30 years in the future

You assume that Verizon cares at all. They have consistently added millions upon millions of customers in the two years since the GNex was released, they don't care about allowing Google's Nexus devices (or any other non-approved devices) onto their network.

brendilon says:

Yes, dozens of fanbois leaving will really cast a pall over the million new subscribers they just picked up.

Am really looking forward to this phone, and I hope it'll sell in Canada via the play store relatively shortly after the official launch. Anyone else happen to notice the background they used for the phone? Looks like the reversed colours for the MS window's flag, but in the same sort of arrangement....coincidence? (edit - I hadn't looked at the new N7 as closely before, but noticed it there too *shrug*)

shadowgod says:

So I will be able to purchase this Nexus 5 and activate it on the Sprint network?

UndeadNexus says:

We don't know if Sprint will allow Play Stores devices into their network. or if they'll only sell them through their stores

The Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus on Sprint were only sold through stores, so it's hard to know at this point how Sprint would handle a device sold from the Play Store.

As I sit swyping on a VZW S4 I long to sell this hunk of plastic for a bit a pure android. Although rooted and rommed, the Dev experience in the vzw gnex was amazing.

Posted via Android Central App

ConTejas says:

Nothing touches the Nexus dev community. I never complained about anything software related on my lte gnex, only the ridiculous price I paid to use it every month. That said, I understand the complaints of those that wanted the OTA Nexus experience on VZW. I don't see Google making that mistake again unless Verizon is ever willing to take off the leash, in writing.

zero.efx says:

I was really hoping to get this device (yes, I'm on Verizon.) and after reading the comments (you guys are so helpful) about the New Nexus 7 debacle I'm at a loss. I feel like I've been ripped off, cheated, my heart stomped, and my ex girlfriend took Louisville Slugger to both headlights.

I mean... I didn't know about the whole controversial Verizon not letting the Nexus 7 run on it's network. But at the same time it just begs the question of why? I know I'm setting myself up for "Verizon is evil! It touches you at night when you're sleeping and takes extra money out of your wallet!" I'm just giving my honest to goodness stunned reaction.

I'm not going to say "I hope it's going to run on Verizon" cause it's not. I don't want to read troll comments like "Switch carriers! It's soooooo much easier!" sorry, bro. It ain't that simple. Verizon hands down is the best the in my area and I need my phone to actual do stuff for work. So I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I guess DROID Maxx here I come.... U really wanted the timely updates without root but I guess I'm not missing anything from the phone side when I have a Nexus 7 2012 in perfect working order.

Posted via Android Central App

ConTejas says:

Make sure you take a look at the Moto X on VZW.

Esteban4u says:

As seen with the Galaxy Nexus, the lack of any other Nexus device after it, the current Nexus 7 (2013) Certification Debacle, the probability that there won't be a Nexus 5 on VZW, their refusal to allow Android phones to get prompt updates and insistence that all Android phones be bootloader locked, VZW has become a hostile carrier to Android phones, fans of the Android O/S and Google itself. Its become quite clear that VZW doesn't respect Android the way it does IOS. But the only way they would understand the displeasure of the savvy yet vocal enthusiast minority like myself would be to hurt them where it would hurt them, in their pockets. Get the word out to all your loved ones, families, friends, coworkers, etc... who you support and influence their cell phone purchasing decisions and who are also fans of Android devices themselves to stop buying Android devices from carriers like VZW, that cripple and prematurely end the life of still-useful Android devices. We as Android enthusiasts, deserve to have the most current and secure Android O/S version as well as the same great user experience VZW allows iPhone users to have.

neonworm says:

Depends on how much it costs me.

Why is there NO expandable memory via MicroSdHC card? Guess they couldn't make this phone perfect because then no one will spend $300 MORE for the LG G2 which has similar specs...DAMMIT!!!

neonworm says:

Google said that they would never add SD card support.

drokssilva says:

yup. Because they think it is to complicated. And I agree

Posted inside a time machine 30 years in the future

The LG G2 doesn't have an SDcard slot either... But yeah, Google is done using SDcards for various sound reasons including the complication for the user, the instability of removable storage and the file system issues of having it.

If all of the specs turn out to be true on the N5, there will be basically nothing different between it and the G2 beside the external changes.

ConTejas says:

To be fair, the screen, camera, and battery are slightly different. Not to say all three won't be better on the N5. I know the software will be for sure. That's worth more in and of itself to me. Fortunately, it's actually a lot less!

Jet300 says:

I used to have Galaxy Nexus and bought the GS4 when I made the switch to TMo. I have to say while the device is nice, having to use a separate SD card is a pain in the ass .. I've gotten so used to just saving to my device with the GNex and the N7. Having to worry about partitions and moving apps seems so clunky to me now.

This is pretty close to what was featured in the rendered leaks, only so much better. I'm waiting on the reviews to start when this is officially announced and released. I'm hoping for a better camera because the Nexus 4 camera quality is HORRIBLE and they've opted to still keep the pixel density at 8MP so should be interesting to see if they improve that.

The focus should also be a better screen and a better battery performance. If all those are implemented Google can have my money.

ConTejas says:

The N4 is a very capable smartphone camera. You're likely a very poor photographer...

There has been an update regarding the pictures. Google has officially confirmed them, here is the forum post on Android Central http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/325371-google-confirms-l...

The reasons given for the delay seem odd to me. I thought the phone already had FCC certification so can't see how the shut down would affect a release?

The event on 24th apparently, isn't hardware related if we're to believe Google's response to questions.

As there doesn't seem to be anything left about the phone itself, that we haven't seen leaked, I wonder what a launch would offer?

I think it would wrong-foot everyone if Google just put the Nexus 5 on Google Play and let people find it... It would be much more intriguing as a launch than a big (non)event for an item we all seem to know inside-out....

I don't know why Google would sell a 16gb for the expense of lower battery life. that seems quite liberal of them. The battery needs to DEFINITELY be improved. My Nexus 4 is TERRIBLE on battery. 4hrs max is what I get with normal facebook, texting, very minor web search, and instagraming here and there. The battery life is a MUST. Also, if they improve the battery, sell it with 4.4 and LTE enable it, I wouldn't even second thought paying close to $400. That's a steal.
