A few weeks back, Foursquare announced Swarm — a new app that aims to help track down your friends when you're out and about. Using Swarm, you'll be able to see which of your friends are nearby, even if they haven't checked in somewhere. You can also suggest plans to your Swarm friends, then text those that are interested in tagging along.

Swarm is a separate app from Foursquare (which is getting a revamp of its own very soon), so the feature set is different than what you're used to. New stickers will replace things like mayorships and leaderboards, making Swarm more about being social and less about the competition. You're also able to search back through your entire check-in history within the Swarm app.

Swarm is free to download and use, but keep in mind that you'll need a good set of friends also using the app to make it worthwhile.

I got burnt out of the FourSquare app a while ago. I'll give this a try and see how it pans out.

This is awesome! Well, in theory. I'm sure it will get abused somehow.

I've been using Foursquare for years. After reading about this for a few weeks I still don't understand what they're trying to do.

No, thanks.

They should call this Yelp lite.

Ah, so this is why Facebook rushed out a very similar version of this two weeks ago.

I'm liking it so far. You can actually plan meet ups, something that you couldn't do with Foursquare. You can also see how far away your friends are even if they don't check in anywhere. I was on the fence but I understand why they split it. Oh they got rid of the points so there's no incentive to game the system now.

There's a phone on your phone if you want to plan meetups. No need to stalk everyone.

I don’t like that they’re getting rid of check-ins within Foursquare and I don’t like this new app.
First of all, I don’t understand why there is a start page that (for me) only gives me the option to add friends. That’s a waste of an entire screen with an option that should be somewhere in the settings. I would prefer to start up in what’s the second screen, a list of my checkins and those of my friends.
The third screen, Plans, I’m never going to use. If I want to plan a meeting with friends, why would I limit myself to only those people who have this app installed?
The fourth screen is also a waste of space. Why would I need or want a full screen of notifications whereas this is just a drop down list in the Foursquare app.
If there are no improvement soons, this will be deleted. If checkins are removed from the Foursquare app, it will also be deleted. Goodbye Foursquare, you ruined a perfectly good app by alienating your existing userbase and deviating from what made you great!
