Swype Beta

There are plenty of great choices when it comes to a keyboard for your Android device, and Swype has long been a crowd favorite. Today's new beta update should please everyone who uses the original swiping keyboard, as the change log is chock full of improvements and fixes:

  • Advanced Language Models added for Hindi and Belgian Dutch
  • Responsiveness for tap input improved for all languages
  • Improved overall Smart Editor behavior and implemented some bug fixes
  • Fixed a Gingerbread crash that occurred when rotating device into landscape mode
  • Fixed miscellaneous crashes reported by the Beta community
  • Fixed an issue where default Android voice input ('mic'/'microphone') icon displayed instead of Dragon logo
  • Changed subtype text in notification drawer to be more accurate
  • Word Choice List behavior improved in Polaris Office
  • And many more bug fixes and improvements!

New language models are always welcome, and small fixes like errant microphone icons are nice, but crashes and bugs getting fixed and a more responsive input method is great news.

Since Swype isn't in Google Play you'll need to manually install it from the link below to give it a try. If you're already using Swype, you should see an OTA in the next 72 hours if you don't want to manually update the app.

Agreed, lol. At least they didn't pull the plug on us(beta testers) after they started selling it to manufacturers.

Unfortunately for us, Swype is only "officially available" preinstalled on phones because OEMs like Motorola are Swype's customers, not end users like us. That's why is not available in the Play Store. The "beta" as we know it is actually what gets sent to the OEMs to be packaged with new devices. Swype's devs make the same finished version available to us, but call it "beta" for a number of reasons, one of which is that we get the keyboard for free in return for testing it.

Swype hasn't gone anywhere.. it's very much current and -- speaking for myself -- still the absolute hands down best keyboard out there for gesture based typing. Anyone who's used it since version 1.4.0 would agree there's a lot of solid polish if they're being honest. I'm biased in favor of Swype here, so please take my opinion only for what it is.

All that said, I have to agree on one point: I don't get the business model here. I don't understand what's stopping Swype from just releasing in the Play Store and charging a buck ninety nine for it. We'd get a much needed streamlined process of downloading and updating, more people discovering the software would increase its popularity, and Swype makes some extra cash. I'm not sure how this isn't win-win for everyone.

I definitely prefer swype to SwiftKey for swiping. Don't like the way SwiftKey automatically shows prediction instead of showing last swiped word. Feel like I am always hitting the backspace. Also like the long list of corrections on the top instead of the 3 words in SwiftKey. Swiftkey still is the best for prediction and touch typing.

I am really surprised that there are still people out there that use Swype! I thought they were dead about now. Swype seems to be still stuck in 2009 or whenever it came out and it's still in Beta? Are you serious?

In my opinion there are a bunch of keyboards are out there that are much much better than Swype. To name a few: SwiftKey, SlideIT, Kii and a few others. SlideIT was always better than Swype. Kii is ok too. It has some killer features but for me nothing comes close to SwiftKey predictions and performance. No keyboard is faster than my SwiftKey for me and I have literally tried every keyboard every made. It's even better than my laptop keyboard.

When swype came out i got it right away and they have updated it for years now.
When swiftkey came out i got it right away, beta tested it, then swiftkey pulled the rug out and wants me to pay for it after it became a sellable product. Your welcome swiftkey, i guess.
Also, swiftkey can't keep up with my swipes. I must have this thing called personal preference.

Swype needs to just stop. They have a terrible distribution model. There are better options now. Last, but not least, it has been in beta for like 4 years...A KEYBOARD!

After using Swype for years, I purchased SwiftKey. While SwiftKey is the best touch type keyboard, the Flow feature is frustrating at best. Many of the predictions are ridiculous, many times not even words. Sometimes I have to backspace and retype a word three or more times, and find the next time I type that word, I have to go through the same process.
Both keyboards have significant issues, and each has its benefit. I have much less problem with Swype than SwiftKey.

Agree. I spent a week using Swiftkey Flow when it was released and found myself spending more time correcting than typing.

Again this is the beauty of Android. I am more productive with Swype; other with Swiftkey; others with the many other keyboards out there. So nice to have choices.

I wonder if this update fixes the Galaxy s email issue. When using exchange, the keyboard makes the cursor jump all over the place.

And why can't they use the play store like everyone else?

I have swype on my nexus 4. Hands down beats swiftkey flow when it comes to trace typing.

I even like google's glide better than swiftkey's flow.

I used to use Swype until I tried Swiftkey Flow.

Functionality wise, I do like Swiftkey a little bit better, but the kicker for me is that Swype is (still) not available via the Play Store. Always seemed to run into problems when upgrading/changing ROMs when I was using Swype, even while restoring a Titanium Backup. No issue with Swiftkey.

Seeing as I update/change ROMs a lot (thank you Galaxy Nexus and now Nexus 4 !!), this was a deal breaker.

To me, Swype is a million miles ahead of Swiftkey in terms of swiping. Unless you enjoy terrible editing and typing every single letter of a web address - no Flow in a URL box, are you kidding? - Swype is the answer. That said, I'm not seeing this 1.4.9 version. Their site is still showing 1.4.5 and when I try to download it anyway, it says there is no new version available for my device.
