Samsung is now believed to be debuting a Google Glass competitor this fall, possibly alongside the Galaxy Note 4. Dubbed the Gear Glass, the wearable smart glasses is expected to run the Tizen operating system similar to Samsung's recently updated smartwatches, like the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear Fit.

According to a report on Korean publication Business Korea, the Gear Glass is expected to debut in Germany at the IFA show, citing an undisclosed Samsung associate. The IFA show is a venue that Samsung had used in the past to showcase its Galaxy Note phablet series.

"We rolled out the smartwatch first, and have secured a considerable amount of smart glass-related technology and patents," the associate said. "Following the roll out of our smart watch Galaxy Gear in September last year, we are slated to introduce our smart glass Gear Glass this September."

"The Gear Glass design combines an ear piece and display, enabling people to listen to music with the right ear while looking at the display with the right eye," the publication alleges. Samsung has thus far not announced the Gear Glass and we still don't know what the smart glasses will ultimately look like when and if it gets announced in Berlin later this fall.

Natural progression of things. If one competitor comes out with something, so do the others to maintain market mindset. Am I wrong with thinking that LG has one coming as well? I seems to remember reading that somewhere.

I will have to say, that it is going to be a bit funny when I see all the posts of "I do not want touchwiz on my face!"

Google now is the future for wearable devices.

I certainly hope so. I am a fan of Samsung phones, not the ecosystem. Maybe the one from LG will follow the Google Now approach and improve on it.

Their watch seems to be more geared that direction.

Samsung phones are ok for sure. HOWEVER, for me personally, samsung isnt getting a dime from me (maybe ever). This whole tizen crap has to go. The A$$holes wouldnt be ANYWHERE NEAR where they are today without android, and they just ditch it for this garbage. Not gonna support it with my money. That and all the "only compatible with Samsung" crap. If i wanted to be locked into one company, I would go the apple route.

Not only that, but they are doing this AFTER android wear has already been given to OEM's. Just wrong.

hmmm says:

Ugh, Gear Glass? Be a little more original please, Samsung.

NoNexus says:

it is called branding and business 101. You have the Galaxy line for phones, the Galaxy gear for wearables, and the Gear Glass to continue the wearables line.

It is a bit better than the "Glasstic" Trademark that LG put out there last year

DWR_31 says:

Galaxy only refers to Android in the Samsung ecosystem.

I hear you but they couldn't go for even Gear GlassES, Gear Specs, Gear Vision etc. Google Glass is surprisingly well know outside of the tech world. Moreso than the Nexus line. Not sure who'd benefit more from "stealing" the Glass name. I think I like two of the three I mentioned above better. Also, I'd be willing to be the patents the recently "procured" is directly from the patent sharing agreement Google and Sammy made.

Samsung and originality are two words that can't be used in the same sentence.

Try and be nice. This person matters to a lot of people, where as no one likes a hater.

DragonBall Z is coming to reality. Of you have seen the concept then you know that Google's power level is too high lol

Samsung isn't even being coy about it anymore I see.

benthe1 says:

I think he meant the fact that Samsung is using its own OS and will probably only work with other Samsung devices.

NoNexus says:

I was figuring that he was talking about using "glass" in the name but you could very well be right.

frettfreak says:

if everyone keeps buying it, tizen will be on all samsung crap. STOP TELLING THEM ITS OK WITH YOUR MONEY PEOPLE!!! BUY ANOTHER BRAND

yeah and that is the dumb part. Something I really do not understand with them. You are selling a product, you can still install your own apps (thus putting the user in your ecosystem), and you want to exclude millions of people? Sure you want them to keep buying phones from you, but for the most part that is going to happen anyway.

Don't see the point of the restrictions...

D13H4RD2L1V3 says:

Well, some guys with Samsung phones have managed to port the Gear Manager app to other devices, like the Nexus 5, HTC One M8, LG G2 etc.

Then again, you need a Samsung phone for it to work...

frettfreak says:

it did the opposite for me. I am on android because i can choose different OEMS if i want. If i wanted to be locked into 1 eco system, and 1 oem, it would be apple becuase its better than Samsungs by 10 miles (and i hate apple). Samsung switching to tizen and making "samsung compatible" products is making me want to buy anything BUT Samsung.

Sonicaholic says:

Please no Tizen, we want Android ware Samsung hear our plee!

dumbcow1 says:

Google will give favored OEM status to LG or HTC in the future if Samsung keeps at this Tizen crap. Sammy needs to rememeber who made them who they are!!! Without Google they would still be making refrigeration and tv units exclusively!

Zig261 says:

And Samsung was profiting just fine selling refrigerators and TVs before they got into Android. Andorid simply made Samsung even bigger and diversified.

It goes both ways, Samsung put Android on the map.

That being said, this split sucks. I would love for Samsung to abandon this crap and stick with Android

I respectfully disagree. After the HTC G1, Motorola's OG Droid really got Android moving, particularly in the US.

Go to 0:24 in this video.

After Motorola's success in the US and Europe (with the Milestone), Samsung's Galaxy S (0:40 in video) helped spread Android worldwide. I respect Sammy and their accomplishments, but let's give credit, where credit is due.

Hummm, interesting...might have to start saving my change now.

I'm sure people will be more likely to buy this because it doesn't have the word "Google" in its name.
