Google Play

No secret KitKat changes came with today's Google Play store update

You may have noticed a new look in your Google Play app this evening, as the 4.4 update is rolling out to users. There's not a lot to talk about with changes, because the only thing we're able to see different is the new hamburger menu is now implemented in the app, leading to a more consistent feel across Google's closed and proprietary applications.

This does affect users who still have a menu button on their device, as now instead of opening the overflow the menu button only opens a window with a "settings" and "help" entry, while the rest of the shortcuts are in the drawer. Other than that, it's the same Play store app you're used to, with the same wish list screen, my apps pages, and shopping menu as always.

If you haven't received the update, there are a couple things you can try. There are (as always) mirrors floating around out there, but if you're not keen on trusting a file that updates a system app when you don;t know where ti comes from, we found a few ways that ended up forcing the updates here.

  • Just reboot. That's how Andrew was able to get the update pushed to him.
  • Uninstall updates for Google play in settings > applications. This worked for Alex.
  • Clear cache and data for Google Services Framework in your settings, then reboot (advanced). This is what I had to do.

Or just wait it out, because you're not really missing anything except a cleaner app navigation system. We've got a handful of screenshots after the break.

You're not alone. I haven't gotten it either! :-(

Posted from my AT&T Galaxy S3 running Android 4.1.2 with the Android Central App!

Jerry is an ass man. I knew I liked him for a reason...other than the great articles he writes, of course.

I have a moto x and none of the three methods worked for me.
Oh well as you say, no big deal, I'll wait.

So just installed it and seems like the designed for tablet thing is active but imo the filters are not doing there job, apps like Facebook and Twitter which are just blown up mobile versions still show up in the tablet section.. Side note do like the new slide out bar.

Im in no hurry it will arrive when it arrives, by the sound of jerrys article, its not worth getting excited about and the now old play store still serves tge same purpose lol

I got reverted to play store 4.2 instead when I uninstalled updates.

Posted via Android Central App using my Nexus 4

I remember getting in an argument with someone in the Nexus forums that insisted clearing the cache and data from Google framework services would damage the device.

|❌_❌|

When people were doing that to force their Nexus 4s to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3, it screwed with their ability to downloads apps from the Play Store. I don't know if the same issue exists when doing the same thing under 4.3.

Personally I think that issue was a coincidence. There were server issues the same time people were trying to force the 4.3 update with this method. I had issues updating and installing apps prior to trying it. They eventually cleared up after about a weeks time.

|❌_❌|

It's not coincidence - it's an issue that came up after they started moving more things to the play services framework.

If you futz with that then you'll have to re-add your google account and redo your location settings etc.

It's a pain, and I'm not bothering with it again.

Yeah, but the solution was just to remove your Google account from your device and then re-add it.

I've been using Pinterest a lot lately and I kinda wish the Play Store now that it looks a lot like Pinterest it behaved like it too. Sometimes I swipe left to right and it bugs me it doesn't go back.

After deleting data and clearing cache my WiFi is messed up. Posting this with 3G... Help appreciated?
I have rebooted several times.

I'm thinking it's my WiFi and just a coincidence it happened at the same time as doing this

can I install the apk provided by the guys at Android police? is that app gonna get future official updates?

Posted via Android Central App

I just used the apk from phandroid.com really not much changed, except the little slide out menu on the left. not a huge update, but a little bit more streamlined.

Is there a way to send feedback on the playstore app? It really bugs me that reviews aren't ordered by time posted or that you can't set it as a default. Really who cares if it's "most helpful". It's helpful if it's there and telling you not to install the latest update. But those are buried and not seen until it's too late. Does anyone ever even vote? And why can't one read the full subject line of the review? Why allow all the characters if all we can see is "..." trailing off. Plus, the review area doesn't give you a character count so you don't know when you are almost out of space and for some reason you can't leave the same length review as you can from your desktop. They are mobile apps. Shouldn't have to go to a computer to leave a full review.

Also that there isn't a separate list for apps that aren't installed on your device, that you have to clear apps from the all apps list one by one, that they aren't in alphabetical order and that it refreshes to the top of the list each time you permanently delete an app. So frustrating when you are trying to remove several items. Google seriously needs to pay a visit to the Apple App Store app.

If you go into "All Reviews" there are tabs at the top to adjust the filtering of the reviews...

However, I agree with everything else you said.

+1. It's so frustrating to take the time to leave a review for an app in the Play Store that I think will be posted in its entirety, only to see the review lopped off in the middle of a sentence or worse yet, a word . And, then of course, I'm the one who looks like an idiot.

I like the slide out menu pattern, but I much prefer it when the slide out menu is "underneath" the current screen, so it mimics the action of you dragging/pulling out the current screen to reveal the slide out menu. Different strokes :)

I got it by downloading the apk from Android Police - loving the update :)

I uninstalled the updates on my Google Play Store and restarted, and now all I get when I open the store is "No connection" with a Retry button that doesn't do anything.

Can someone advise me?

Thanks.

Did you resolve the problem yet? Try restarting your device? You should get a message asking if you want to install the factory settings for Play Store. Check the yes button. Afterwards, restart your device again. If you haven't received the update to 4.4.21 (you can check the version in the application manager in the device Settings), you can try to update through the other methods mentioned. If that doesn't work, and you don't want to wait for it to update itself, you can use one of the mentioned sites to update by apk. (that's what I did)
