Android Central App

We're getting back to work on mapping out the what's next for the Android Central app (and the companion apps for our sister sites), and we figured today would be as good a day as any to check in with you fine folks.

High up on our list is improved design for tablets, search integration, and notifications of new stories and replies to comments.

And that's all well and good. But what else do you want to see? Sky's the limit. We're not making any promises, but we want to hear any and all good ideas. And if you've yet to do so, give our app a try!

Let's hear it: What else do you want to see in our app?

That was included with the "oh snap you can read the title and not click it" update.

I like reading about other platforms and how they might handle things differently to Android.

Posted via Android Central App using an LG G2.

Then go to the sister sites. This is Android Central, not All Mobile OSes Central.

Posted via Android Central App

Shouldn't there be a Mobile Nations app, allowing users to view as many or as few of the sites content as possible? I don't want to install 3-5 apps to read Mobile Nations stuff, I'd rather use one app (which my rss reader does already)

I think a Mobile Nations app is a great idea. I also enjoy reading about all the different platforms and it would be nice to be able to read from one app.

Posted via the Android Central App

No no, that's not good enough. I need to know without any doubt whatsoever that no one else likes things that I don't like. I must feel maximum smugness at all times.

Posted from my Nexus 5, behind seven proxies

I fail to see your point. Do you not want knowledge of how your platform measures up to others in one place? Or would you rather look for all the information yourself and try to see what connects where? With the occasional mention of Apple things they are literally doing work for you.

You should still go to iMore tho, because you see the other biased/unbiased perspective.

Posted via Android Central App

That he does. Because in terms of hardware Samsung is Apple's competitor. Which was my point, despite how badly worded it was. We discuss iOS and Apple from time to time because we "compete" with them.

Posted via Android Central App

I agree and don't mind seeing articles about competitors. I wind up reading them most of the time too. Rene doesn't seem that objective though. The reality distortion field is strong with him.

Posted via Android Central App

I think the fact that all the sites are openly biased makes it objective. He is clearly (in most cases) going to support everything Apple does. And he can do this because Apple is one entity. Android Central seems more objective because there is not "One Android" there are tons of flavors and they don't have to like them all. But knowing that when you go to iMore, or wpcentral or Android Central, you are going to get accurate and well informed information pertaining to said platform makes it objective.

Not objective would be a site like CNET, they claim to be unbiased, but clearly favor Apple in every review or new shared. With the Mobile Nations site you know what you get simply from the name.

Posted via Android Central App

Agreed. I've said it a million times. iPhone news is Android news, and high-end Android news is iPhone news. When Apple does something significant, you can bet that some Android OEM are going to do the same, and cool new Android features always work their way into the next iPhone.

Basically, I've always thought of the Mobile Nations sites as being for people who are interested in mobile devices in general, with each site having a different (but not totally exclusive) focus.

Posted from my Nexus 5, behind seven proxies

Yeah notifications, especially for comment/forum replies. That would be SO convenient you have no idea.

Posted via Android Central App

Notifications are available on the AC Forums App, but I believe that is run by Tapatalk.
You can like posts in the forums though :)

Sent from my Galaxy S4 running SlimKat 4.4.4

Fortunately, neither are you. Either way I will live with it if it comes out but its not my preference. That's all.

Posted via Android Central App

The ability to search. That's all I want. If I type in Verizon or Sprint or..
Wait for it... Lightsquared!

I should be able to find all articles relating to what I typed in the search box.

Posted via the Android Central App

I'd love to see articles showing as read/unread synced across devices.

Also, push notifications of replies to comments would be great.

Also, better comment nesting would be great. Reading really long comment threads can be confusing on the app. I'd like the ability to load a conversation starting from a single comment.

Posted from my Nexus 5, behind seven proxies

Absolutely want syncing of article status (read, unread, etc) across devices. It's the app's biggest flaw in my mind.

Posted via Android Central App

Search capability. The ability to search for articles and to search for articles more than a month old.

Posted via the Android Central App

I believe I once read it was being worked on, but I'd really like to see in-app searching. The app is my primary way of reading articles, so it'd be very useful. Thanks for working so hard, guys - love the app so far!

Posted via Android Central App

I'd really like to see websites get away from apps. Be what you are, web content. No need of an app, just be better at what you're doing. Apps tend to clutter and bloat my phone, but my browser is forever.

Really? Did that just happen?

Posted via Android Central App

Phil did you force the app on our phones without telling us or do we have a choice on whether or not we download it?

If I could post pictures, it would be that meme of Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka with the caption "YOU ARE WRONG SIR!".

Posted via Android Central App

Browsed on the website the other day and hated it. Love using the app.

Posted via Android Central App

Chronological search.

Example, the other day I went to look for Jerry's facebook article about the permissions, and I just searched "facebook" on the search bar. Pulled up every article except that one. lol.

Generally if someone is looking for something here, I think people are looking for it because they remember it was here. The longer away in time that story is, the least likely we are to look for it.

If I could have just pushed a sort by "date published" it would have probably given me the right article.

That would be cool. So basically on top of search, maybe a set of categories to choose from? Similar to the site with apps, devices, etc and of course AC University.

Posted via Android Central App

Looks like there's a couple votes for search (proving they didn't read the article), a vote for phaser capability, a vote for no app, and the Editor in Chief wants to play Pokemon.

To be able to search for article publisher, i.e. All articles posted my Andrew, Jerry, yourself etc

Posted via the Android Central App

Still unable to upload pictures from my N5 to photo contest from the app. Is it just me or anyone else has the same problem?

Posted via Android Central App on my Nexus 5

Yeah, I've never been able to upload a photo using the app, but it might just mean I dont know what I'm doing...

Posted via Android Central App

Also can't upload images for the competition from the app. How about a guide how to incase were doing it wrong.

Posted via Android Central App

More editorials on the budget range of phones like the Moto G/E and maybe a daily app recommendation similar to appgratis.

Posted via Android Central App

I've always wanted a all in one app. Material design would be nice and ability to search. Sometimes I remember an article that was written a few days ago and I want to check it out again to check some details but there's no way to find it. The major ones you have mentioned all ready which is notifications for comment replies and a proper tablet optimised app.

Posted via Android Central App using galaxy s4

For some time now, I've wanted an app that gives access to all of the Mobile Nations sites. We already have this for the forums via the Mobile Nations Forms app, so that seems like the next logical iteration.

Posted via my Dell Venue 8 Pro. :)

I would like this. A way to toggle between the mobile nations sites. I'm not downloading every sites app. That's bs...

Posted via Android Central App

Notification of replies to my brilliance. Not just a ding and a popup in the bar...an actual notifier in the app. So I can disable actual sound/phone notifications if I want to and still open the app and see what's going on. Like Tapatalk does with forums.

A proper control panel for managing notifications, posts, profile.

Highlighting of unread comments on an article.

-Free burritos!
-Troll check, like spell check but it underlines anything that makes you sound Troll-ish.
-Beard Cam! I really would like to know what Jerry is doing at all times.
-the current nesting of comments is ... hard to follow... Maybe a use of colors ???

A round app icon like the one in the play store not a square one. Ability to post pictures through the app. Material design. Notification to reply's on a comment.

Posted from Nexus⁴ via Android Central App

"Round"? Is it really THAT big of a deal what the shape of an app icon is? Really? Wow!

Posted via the Android Central App

for some strange reason, I always get a craving for pizzas when I'm reading stuff on AndroidCentral.

Can you add a button in your app that will allow me to instantly place an order with one single click at my favorite pizza place?

Thank you very much.

Yeeesssss. Same happens in articles. I'd love to have that changed.

Great job, guys (and girls?)!

Posted via the Android Central App

Yep, just going to mention this. Now I don't have to.

Android: It will make you a sexual tyrannosaurs, just like me.

A way to mark comments as read. That way when I come back I can easily figure out which comments are new.

Posted via Android Central App

I want this app to be paid for and include ads. Or keep it freemium and each article is $.99 to read. (Still with ads) No search please, too many options then. And can you please get rid of replies to comments. Way too much clutter. Oh and make the theme pink, it'll flow much better. Also, no more proof reading! I like a challenge when I'm reading articles.

Posted via Android Central App

No, that's a terrible idea. I want an app that makes me buy some kind of in-app currency with real-world money (I'm thinking DroidBux) which I then use to buy the ability to read individual articles.

Obviously, I should be constantly encouraged to take surveys and download sponsored apps in exchange for small amounts of DroidBux.

Posted from my Nexus 5, behind seven proxies

You're right, we shouldn't be able to pay straight with real dollars. In fact, buying coins to buy points to read article sounds even better. Let's not make this easy folks.
Also, I don't think its fair to download and take surveys for free currency. The apps you can download must be paid apps at least.

Posted via Android Central App

Make sure that the coin and point packages are not the same, either, so that we have like 3 coins left over every time.

Android: It will make you a sexual tyrannosaurs, just like me.

Why yes of course. And the lowest tier coins will not get you anything, so you have to buy two of them or the next highest one at least.

Posted via Android Central App

Private messages in the forums through the app? Is there a way to do this and I'm missing it?

Posted via Android Central App

But then how will I know of which carrier and manufacturer are the best, period?

Posted from my Nexus 5, behind seven proxies

I dunno what that dude is talking about. I want a "Yarell" tab that I can access at all times with his most recent comments.

ಠ益ಠ

More themes. I love themes, and the default isn't to bad, but a theme chooser would be a great addition to this great app.

Posted via the Android Central App on my Nexus 7 2012

Not sure if it happens on other devices but I have a Nexus 5 and if I lock the screen when I'm reading an article, it automatically scrolls back to the top when I turn it back on. It's not that big of a deal but it would be nice if it would just stay where it was instead.

Posted via Android Central App

I just dl this app. and I love it. much better than bgr app. I like it better than it google + page too. would like material design thou

Posted via the Android Central App

Of course it's better than the BGR app. It doesn't have any BGR content in it.

Android: It will make you a sexual tyrannosaurs, just like me.

Is there anyway to have it merge the comments on articles with the social networks? Have it show comments from G+, twitter, the website, Facebook etc... I imagine that would slow things way down if it even is possible.

Posted via Android Central App w/G2

I've never been able to upload a picture to the forums from the app. I tried dozens of different pictures at different resolutions, sizes, file formats, etc. And it had never worked. Always says, "cannot upload attachment." So I'd love to see that fixed.

They had the NSFW wallpapers at first and various app stores asked them to remove it. Add it back and the app would probably get removed from app stores.

Posted via Android Central App

Please! Please! Fix the issue of android central for closed every time I use emojis in comment and treads, I have this issue on KitKat 4.4.2,4.4.4, Moto G and 4.1.2 Galaxy Tab 3!!

Posted via the Android Central App

Article search is basically what I'm looking for. These past days where I got my Moto G I wanted to look for some things about it only to realize I had go to the website to search articles

Posted via the Android Central App

Have all of the Mobile Nations apps somehow be linked together. I primarily spend my time here and over at Connectedly. I'd love if, when articles were posted to both sites, the comments to articles were linked.

I hate having to go through two sets of comments (or leave my comments on both sites).

Posted via Android Central App

If ucfgrad93 wants moar cowbell, I say we give him moar cowbell! We will all be wearing gold plated diapers if we listen!

I think the app is great, search integration would pretty much make it perfect for me. One tiny thing is maybe add a user variable schedule for night mode, so that I can set it to switch automatically when the sun goes down.

The app is fine... having to scroll through multiple pages just to read an article on the website is awful!

Posted via Android Central App

I would like chromecast support for built in videos of some of your articles. Tia

Posted via Android Central App

A forum member asked if articles can be sorted by writer/author through the AC App. Would that be possible? In other words, being able to see all articles written by Phil, Jerry or any other AC writer?

I would say a Material Design redesign, but I suspect that's probably already in the works.

I think a slightly more robust filter would be cool. We can already filter by review, editorials, etc., how about adding filters for author and date?

I think the Android Central app is great already. But if the new app brings more features I wont complain. Its much better then the CB app which I had installed on my BlackBerry before I jumped ship to a much better platorm that actually has a future. I find it funny that people on CB say BB is back. I have heard that for 2 years as they continue to lose market share. But god forbid I posted these facts on CB as I would be labeled a troll. It seems like people on CB dont know what that word means lol

Posted Via AT&T Galaxy Note 3

Material design, search, liking comments (no more posting +1), ability to mark things as read, and subsequently hides already read articles. And perhaps integrate all websites under a single app, giving the ability to go to the menu and switch from Android Central to iMore and vice versa.

Posted from my HTC One M8 via Android Central App

Material Design. Any app from one of the top android sites on the web should follow the latest android design cues.

You know, honestly, having thought about it a bit, I'd like to see the various Mobile Nations apps combined into one where you could select which of the sites your app is populated by. I read a lot from Android Central and Connectedly and occasionally Windows Phone Central, it'd be nice to have them all in one app instead of several.

Posted via Android Central App

How about some way to save articles that you want to reference later, you know, like youtube lets you make 'folders' then you add videos to specific folders so you can find them later super easy! Like a folder for Note 4 for all articles about the Note 4, and a folder for tasker, so any articles that have to do with tasker that I may want to reference later, I'll have at two taps of a finger.

I feel there is a bug/improvement to implement. The pull down to refresh.
it requires quite a lot of pull to make the app refresh content. I would say you have to pull from above half the screen all the way down. In my oneplus one (5.5inches) that is like 3 inches of travel or more. Try doing that while holding the phone with one hand.

Uploading images within app, emoji support, material design, darker night mode, and notifications from replies with quick reply (if possible).

Posted via Android Central App

Whenever you turn the app sideways to landscape mode then turn back to portrait it loses your place in the article. It would be great to be able to switch orientation and not lose your place like some other tech news' apps (ahem engadget)

Posted via the Android Central App

If showing the dark theme, it shouldn't show a white loading screen, it should be dark. If I read at night, I dont want a blinding white screen to ruin my eyes! Lots of devs over look this.. If you use a dark theme to read at night, why on Earth is the intro loading screen white?!?!

How come wpcentral is on android but android central is not on window's phone?

Posted via Android Central App on 1+1

How come wpcentral is on android but android central is not on window's phone?

Posted via Android Central App on 1+1

If you're referring to the article on the windows M8, wpCentral linked the Android Central review of the M8, the hands on video of the Dot view cases, mentioned AC over and over again, and I believe there was link to the M8 hands-on from AC as well.

Posted via Android Central App

I was talking about the apps. Android has all of the mobile nation apps while windows phone only has wpcentral. I assume iOS only has I more. Why does android get them all?

Posted via Android Central App on 1+1

Because Google is less of a pussy willow (it's a plant for reals) (^_^) about things from other platforms. I would think that, because they could at least port all of them over to BB10 with no issue and they haven't right?

Posted via Android Central App

When going from landscape to portrait and vice versa, there's an annoying behaviour: app always jumps to the top of article. So maybe some kind of "anchor" that is in most apps that prevents text from moving too much?

Posted via the Android Central App

Ability to purchase or receive those "android central" stickers all your guys have on their macbooks. You know, the devices we don't want to look at or discuss.

How about on the widget where it says "News" when you tap that it simply takes you to the main news home screen without you having to click an article and then click home inside the app.

Posted via Ash William's Boomstick

The ability to search and see our own post. I use this app way more then the forum app and would find it way more convenient.

Posted via Android Central App

Need ability to make widget translucent, to blend in with the wallpaper.
All my other widgets have it and then when I scroll to the page with the An droid Central widget the black background looks out of place.

Wish there were more responses here from Phil himself, would be nice to get some realistic ideas of how far along they are on some of these overdue features such as notifications and such...

Posted via the Android Central App

Posted via Android Central App

I would like to see daydream support. I know it is something a lot of people do not use but I would love to be able to dock my phone and see a feed of posts with beautiful full screen photos.

Posted via Android Central App

In-app bookmarks, great for things like ACU and your new series on Tasker. Keeping your place when changing between landscape and portrait. And SEARCH!!! 1!

Posted via Android Central App

Don't ask them to report more speculation dude. I already avoid CNET and PocketNow for this reason.

Posted via Android Central App

Search and tabs in the side-menu to offer more options for the point of an article (one for reviews, one for editorials, one for updates to software, etc.), to make reading certain types of stories easier

One app to rule them all!!! A combined app for all of the mobile nations forums.... Except iMore

Posted via Android Central App

Maybe it's just me; but on my Note 3, the app icon looks lower res than it should. Possibly an update to make it bigger with a higher resolution? Just a thought.

If I try to post a comment in the app using an emoji (from regular Android/Hangouts), the app will crash and not post the comment.

Not very big, but, still.

I use Twitter and Google+ and I get my story links from there. I've had Fox, CNN, and ABC News apps but when I click a link it opens in the browser. So what's the point of having apps.
Your app opens sometimes, other times its the browser. So you have to figure that out..

I need to be able to load more than 100 articles. Seriously, you guys post 100 articles in 3 days sometimes. I want to be able to get to the bottom and hit "More".

Posted via Android Central App

Chromecast support for video and audio. I know I can hit the settings icon on a video, then launch YouTube, then hit the cast icon, then choose device for video, but casting straight from the video in the Android Central app would be cleaner and more convenient.

I'd like to be able to zoom in on pictures. Sometimes there are pictures of unreleased upcoming phones and being able to see fine details would be nice.

Please add a visual indication of a thread being locked so I do not waste my time typing on something that cannot even be posted. In fact, it should disable the keyboard from even working on that post.

Love the AC App, it's one of the few news apps I prefer to mobile browsing to be honest.

I would echo the features requested by many - notifications on comment replies (I've waited until I can post this on the web for example, I rarely comment on the app) and cross device read/unread syncing. Then possibly a read later/favourite option on articles so I can have create a small reference list if I need to go back to an article at a later time for whatever reason.

sometimes i use the app, sometimes i want to use the mobile site if i'm already in chrome but often get a big nagging banner to install the app. any way to remove that if you've already installed the app?

Search feature please, and make it so I can search for something in certain sections like reviews.

Posted via Android Central App

Oh, and the ability to sort comments on articles where the most recent is at the top. Would be great on the main site, too. Always having to scroll all the way down to see what's new really sucks.

We should be able to participate in a giveaway with a single click instead of having to post a comment and say silly stuff that no one will ever read because it is on page 148 of 423.

I'd like to have the ability to enter the photo competitions straight from the post in the app. With the option to take a picture directly or upload one from the gallery. Without having to go to the desktop site.

Better support for downloading in background. I want to queue up a bunch of stories, then go and read them. They should be ready to go, images and all, after a little while. Right now it's pretty clunky, so I just went back to using a web browser.
