Samsung will once again kill off its ChatON messaging service. After it was previously reported and subsequently denied by Samsung that ChatON will bite the dust, the Android Galaxy-maker has made the termination official, announcing that the service will be closed to conversations and emojis effective February 1, 2015 at 9 AM.
Update: Samsung says the service will shut down everywhere but in the U.S.
Korea's Yonhap News reports:
"Under changes in the services operation policy, ChatOn will be closed as of 9 a.m. on Feb. 1, 2015," the South Korean tech firm said. "The move came in line with efforts to meet the changing demands in the market and provide differentiated services to users, focusing on other areas such as health and mobile commerce," it said.
Samsung says user will be able to download chat records, photos and videos before the shutoff date.
According to Engadget, ChatOn will shut down everywhere but in the U.S. market.
On February 1, 2015, ChatON will be discontinued in all markets except the United States, as we strive to meet evolving consumer needs by focusing on our core services. We remain committed to offering services that cater to our consumers' lifestyles and add value to their everyday lives.
