Amazon Appstore

The Amazon Appstore got itself a little update tonight -- it's now at version 1.08 -- and we'd start to get excited about it if we had any idea what was changed. But, hey, an updated app is always better than an un-updated app, unless it breaks something. And, oh, look at that. Icons are missing. That's likely not because of the update, but we'll point fingers anyway.

Amazon Appstore updated, still sells apps

Got this when I emailed amazon informing them I was having issues with the icons after the update.

2.      Make sure you are signed in with the Amazon account that you used to purchase the application.

Once you have the latest client installed, you will need to sign in.  You can log in directly from the “Welcome” screen, or click the “Sign-in” button on the homepage.

3. Refresh Your digital locker. Go to “My Apps.” From the Menu, click “Refresh.”  This process may take several minutes. Once the refresh is complete, relaunch the application.

The missing icons has been a problem on the site in my browser for a couple of hours least it is consistent across platforms :)

main flaws w/Amazon Appstore..

- 1-click purchases are required, can easily purchase apps by accident or if your phone falls in the hands of a 5 year old

- you can't log out from the app

- no signed off, offline app authorization: if you deregister the device online it logs you out on the device, but then when you try to run the apps you've purchased/installed, a window pops up saying you're required to sign in to the app store to use the app.

- No change logs w/updates

all needs fixing

That's what passwords and screen locks are for. That away if a 5 year old does get your phone they can't unlock it to use it. Just use a little common sense!!!

A five year old can accidentally buy apps from the Market too. It's not just the Amazon app. Protect your phone. Good lord.

I noticed this was an issue several hours before I downloaded and installed the update. But it's just icons...right?? LOL

So..forgive me my ignorance, but what's the point of the Amazon App store? What does it offer that Android Market doesn't?

They offer a different paid (ad-free, full version) app for free everyday. So far I've downloaded:

Angry Birds Rio
Angry Birds Seasons
WeatherBug Elite
Talking Tom Cat
SwiftKey Keyboard
SoundHound Infinity
Shazam Encore
PicSay Pro
Fruit Ninja
Flight Control
Farm Frenzy
Doodle Jump
Diner Dash 2
Backbreaker Football
Airport Mania: First Flight

all for free. I've saved over $20 so far by using Amazon's Appstore.

I have a problem with an app that needs to be updated, within hours of being downloaded. On top of that, rather than advising that there is an update available when we open the app (or open the "real" Market), it sends perpetual notifications to the PHONE (at least half a dozen times a day)! I sent an email to the dev, only to receive a useless form letter in response.
If that's not bad enough, after deciding to uninstall to resolve the notification problem, I find that it had somehow wrapped itself into the phone in a way that I now get regular force close notifications in an HTC operational file (EVO).
My advice is to avoid the Amazon App store. It's not worth the free apps. Obviously nothing is "free".
