Android 1.6+ Google Maps went and updated...

Garmin-Asus was showing off the nuvifone A50 at Mobile World Congress, and we took it out for a spin. It's a 3.5-inch (320x480) device running Android 1.6 but is completely skinned. It's being billed as the "No-excuses navigation smartphone," and it certainly is. Nav is first and foremost, and it it was easy to follow in our demo.

We mentioned it in the Google Buzz launch post, but it bears repeating: Google Maps has been updated to Version 4.0. With it you get support for the Buzz layers, along with the previously mentioned night mode and synchronized starred items.

While at CES we had the privilege to present a number of companies at the Mobile Apps Showdown, a live (and online) competition to find the top apps on any of the major platforms. I was paired with Geodelic (formerly Sherpa), a location-based search program with a little trick up its sleeve. Find out what, after the break.

Maybe you are one of the many who does not have Google Navigation, or perhaps you simply want an alternative. Sygic Mobile Maps may be just what you are looking for. It is a polished turn-by-turn GPS application that has some nice features.

Just last month we wrote that Google Navigation was made available to all U.S. devices currently running Android 1.6. Those of you outside of America pretty much were shut out until XDA-Developers ported the app to work outside the states. Unfortunately, Google has shut that route down ... at least for the time being.

Yep, after drooling over the screenshots of Google Maps Navigation in Android 2.0, Google has decided to extend this killer app over to Android 1.6 (and above) devices. According to Google:
