Samsung Display has plans to invest $3.6 billion (4 trillion won) into making OLED panels as its parent company looks at ways to offset the drop in smartphone earnings. According to the Reuters report, the company's new production line would focus on medium and small OLED displays for electronics hardware like a tablet or smartphone.

Analysts said the new line will initially produce curved panels like those on the Galaxy Note Edge, and eventually help win external customers which are becoming crucial to parent Samsung Electronics' future earnings growth as sales of its erstwhile cashcow smartphone business decline.

While the new capacity would likely be utilized by Samsung for its curved panels on the Galaxy Note Edge, it's clear the company will look at other means to help bolster its earnings, be it producing its own hardware or sourcing components to external customers.
