Google Play Books

Seems like today is a good day for updates. Google has now rolled out the latest version of Google Play Books to the Google Play Store and as noted in the change log, this will be a good release for anyone still using Froyo or Gingerbread as it adds a new UI and 3D page animation. Other changes in this update include In-book search when off-line, ability to add a home screen shortcut for a single book and now the screen will stay lit when using text-to-speech. The update is live now; you can jump past the break for the download.

I would use this if it wasn't for the fact that we can't ADD books from the SD-card. It's still a no go for me.

Exactly this. If I cant load the books I already own, the app is useless to me.

Further, unlike ever other reader app, you can't suppress page turn animations, which only server as a distraction to slow you down.

And worst of all, the app went from 152k to 7 Megabytes!!, permanently throwing my poor Nexus One into Low Memory warning state.

My HTC One X can't arrive too soon...

Worst Google app player though very important to complete there media offerings. Come on Google an Army of smart programmers and after a year in books you can't provide highlighting, bookmarks, and guarantee that structured text is available for at least modern books and not scanned pages and no support for magazines and no shelves or folders to organize your library. This sucks big time! This is exactly why Amazon and apple succeed where you often fail, they have focus on products and they keep polishing it until perfection.

You know I was really excited when I first heard about the update, saw some people ranting on it and felt they were being ungrateful then realized that the one thing I was certain going to be changed wasn't. There is No Reason we can't put already purchased books on the play books app and it makes the entire app WEAK. Amazon and Apple are going to continue to dominate this area until Google focuses less on VR glasses and more on the media offerings that other companies are CRUSHING them in. Sorry. Loyal Android Fan. Weak..
