We've heard rumors last month suggesting that Huawei would manufacture the next Nexus smartphone, with the handset reportedly featuring the upcoming Snapdragon 820 processor along with a 5.7-inch QHD display. A phone purported to be the Nexus handset has now been revealed in a leaked video, with the footage giving us a look at what could be a fingerprint scanner at the back beneath the camera sensor.
The video comes from Steve Hemmerstoffer, the man behind @onleaks, who has a decent track record when it comes to leaking unannounced handsets. Earlier this week, Hemmerstoffer highlighted another Huawei phone in prototype, the Mate 8.
From the videos, it is easy to see that the two phones are different, based on the size of the camera sensor, placement of the flash and the overall design at the back. The alleged Mate 8 looks like a cross between a P8 and an Ascend Mate 7, while the Nexus handset is sporting a matte finish and camera similar to that of the Nexus 5. Both devices also sport rear-mounted fingerprint scanners — a surprise in neither case, as last year's Mate 7 included one, and any future Nexus is likely to feature the technology due to Android M's native support for it.
Because of the video's low quality, it's difficult to make out the text on the back of the device. One strong possibility, after a little up-close examination is "POSEIDON."
It's far from clear whether this really is a future Nexus phone, but we're sure to learn more as the regular October timeframe for Nexus launches approaches. If you've got any theories in the meantime, be sure to share them down in the comments!
