Phone 3a, Phone 4a series—it's your turn to receive Nothing OS 5.0 (Android 17)
No better way to end the week than this.
What you need to know
- Nothing announced that its OS 5.0 update (Android 17) is rolling out today (Oct. 30) for the Phone 3a and Phone 4a series.
- The update brings a hefty changelog of fixes and changes for the phones, and there's a little more in store for the Phone 3a series' cameras.
- The Phone 3 received its update in mid-October, and Nothing once again states it's deploying a "staggered" rollout, so not everyone will see it simultaneously.
Another round of testing has concluded for Nothing's Android 17 update, and two more series are receiving the full update to end the week.
In separate community posts, Nothing announced that its OS 5.0 update (Android 17) is rolling out to the Phone 3a and Phone 4a series. Right off the bat, Nothing informs users that this is a "staggered" rollout. Not everyone will see it at the same time, as many users in the replies are noticing. Some have received it, but the majority are still waiting, especially many who were in the beta.
There are a few notable camera differences in what's rolling out for Nothing's Android 17 update between the Phone 3a and Phone 4a. The patch notes state the Phone 3a series is receiving "Enhanced video creation with support for Filters and Tuning, and Dual-view Video." In addition, these phones are downloading "Introduced Tuning with seven adjustable effects and a reset option" and upgraded editing presets.
For the Phone 4a, Nothing says these devices can now "record with the front and rear cameras simultaneously" with Dual-view Video. However, both the 3a and 4a phone series have been granted a refreshed camera UI with updated controls, feedback, and animations.
Essential Voice on the Phone 4a receives an update to its transcription capabilities, as it becomes "faster with reduced latency." The Phone 4a Pro follows closely with additional updates for the base Phone 4a in Android 17.
Have you gotten the update?
As we presumed earlier this month, the Nothing OS 5.0 update is rolling out for the Phone 3a and 4a series after the Phone 3. Mid-October was when Phone 3 users got their hands on the major update, which includes deeper phone customization, improved Essential AI tools, a Glyph Interface app, and a brand-new typeface, Geist. There's quite a lot to cover about Nothing OS 5.0, but those are a few highlights.
Regarding the new typeface, Nothing says Geist is "cleaner and easier to scan." Essential AI got some TLC on the Phone 3, mirroring what's rolling out for the Phone 4a and Phone 4a Pro. Not only have real-time transcriptions taken a step up, but so have its Smart Collections. Nothing says Smart Collections can now "suggest and organize content for you automatically."
