A number of folks have inquired this one lately, so let's nip it in the bud. A recent update to the Android Twitter application brings about a new permission: accessing your phone or tablet's microphone. And rightfully so, folks are doing a double take and asking why Twitter suddenly needs to be able to hear you.
The answer, actually, is simple ...
Twitter's adding the ability to record video. And seeing as how silent film's not really a thing anymore, it's going to want to include audio as well. And that's where the microphone comes in. No, Twitter's not listening to you all the time. No, it's not spying on you. It just wants to be able to put sound to those newfangled moving pictures. And previously the app couldn't do that, thus the new permission.
And that's it.
Thanks to everyone who asked!
