AT&T to begin throttling top 5% of unlimited data users

53

If you are one of the lucky AT&T users who were able to lock into that awesome unlimited data plan before they changed over to their tiered structure -- and also happen to use more data than AT&T thinks is reasonable under that plan -- be prepared for some potentially slower speeds. AT&T has announced that starting Oct. 1, it is going to begin to throttle the top 5 percent of the data consumers, stating that they are using on average 12 times as much data as other customers. Keep in mind, nothing to freak out over here, but if you are one of those who stream all day, and tether all night, be prepared to notice some slower speeds in the coming months.

Developers fuming over missing app comments; Google says it's looking into it

19

We've been watching what's become a bit of a thing the past several days in the Android Market. Developers have seen a significant number of comments disappear from their app listings -- hundreds, at times. And for developers, app ratings and comments are lifeblood. While we don't think anyone would complain if the one-star trolling comments (you know who you are) would disappear, five-star comments have been caught up in the purge as well.

The "good" news, if there is any here, is that a Googler has responded to a support thread, saying:

We're aware of this issue and working to resolve it as quickly as we can. I'll post a follow-up message when I have additional information to share with you.

No ETA on when the comments might be restored, however, and we've put in word with Google, seeking a more official response.

Sprint Motorola Photon 4G available today

48

Today's the day, folks. The Motorola Photon 4G is now available in Sprint stores and online. And if you couldn't tell from Part 1 of our Photon 4G review, we're slightly over the moon about this one. Between the 4.3-inch touchscreen (Pentile display notwithstanding), dual-core 1GHz processor and that it's running Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, plays Netflix out of the box -- and has Sprint's Wimax data -- it's quickly found itself as our new favorite on Sprint.

It's going to be quite the battle between the Photon 4G and the HTC EVO, that's for sure. On the fence? We've got answers in our EVO 3D and Photon 4G forums.

Logitech Revue hits its promised $99 price point

43

Logitech announced in its earnings call last week that its Revue Google TV set-top box would get a deep discount to $99 -- that's $200 off what it initially sold for -- and that pricing is now in effect. Logitech's site actually still says $299. But add the Revue to your cart, and it can be had for $99.

We can argue about functionality and usefulness all day. But for access to Pandora, Netflix, a full browser, Youtube's sweet "Leanback" display, Amazon's movies and a handful of other features, $99's pretty tough to beat.

Update: And Logitech on its blog today mentions that the Android 3.1 update -- which was first touted at Google IO in May -- is still coming, headed our way "later this summer."

Purchase: Logitech Revue; Blog.Logitech Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Want to charge your Photon 4G and use the kickstand? Flip it over

59

Read Part 1 of our Motorola Photon 4G review

The best part about having the best Android community around? Easy answer to stupid problems. See, as Android Central Forums member Quis points out, when you're using kickstand on the Motorola Photon 4G like in the picture above, you can't charge at the same time because the microUSB port is resting against the table/desk/laptop whatever. Oops.

Fellow forums member RickNY points out the easy fix -- the Photon's kickstand is sturdy enough to support the phone backwards. And, sure enough, flip it over and the phone stays up, and the widget clock works, too. Easy solution to a dumb problem. Nicely done, folks!

Android kids app: Kids Maps for Honeycomb tablets

3

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Android tablets are great educational (and babysitting) tools. And it's with that in mind that we take a look at Kids Maps, as reviewed by a soon-to-be 5-year-old.

Kids Maps is really nicely done, blurring the line between puzzle and teaching tool. You've got 50 states, and you have to put them in the right place. When a new state appears, you get a quick fact about it. For instance: Polar bears live in Alaska. Betcha didn't know that.

Gameplay's really simple -- you just drag the state to the empty map. Dragging is smooth, but it's pretty easy to just drag the state around until it finds the right spot, as you'll see my little cheater do in the video. If you do manage to drop the state in the wrong place more than a couple times, it'll outline the correct spot.

There aren't many options to this one -- you can choose either to place states randomly, or receive them alphabetically, which can be helpful if someone's having to learn the states in alphabetical order.

The game itself is really nice done, with nice music and clear speech and instructions. Our only real complaints are that 50 states are a lot to do in one sitting -- perhaps breaking it down by regions might make things a little more fun. Also, more facts will make playing it a second and third time a little more fun. But if you've got a budding geography expert who also loves puzzles, you could spend $2.99 worse ways.

We've got download links after the breaks if you want to give Kids Maps a go.

Concert footage from LG's 'Bring Your World Alive' event in Hell's Kitchen now on Youtube

3

LG's mighty proud of the Thrill 4G, and we can't say we blame them -- check out the hands-on and see why.  To celebrate the launch, they threw a big bash on July 25 in New York with musical guest Jane's Addiction, and the concert footage from the party is now on line for every one to have a look at.  At their ComeAlive Youtube channel, they've dropped nine videos of the band having a loud good time, as well as the crowd.  Maybe even more interesting to us Android fans, on Aug. 4 they will be uploading a full documentary shot in 3D with the LG Thrill 4G to their channel.  Should make for a great look on any stereoscopic 3D device, like the Optimus 3D or the EVO 3D.  Of course with word that the LG Thrill may be delayed, it's may be a few weeks until you can actually watch in on a Thrill.  In the meantime, check out the band at the source link.

If you're in Canada and looking to pick up the  Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, you may want to check out Virgin Mobile. They are currently offering this device for just $349.99 with no contract, which looks like a great deal compared to some of the other carrier's prices. And with carriers changing data plans left and right, there's no better time to look into pre-paid services. You can find full details at the source link below.
