Sprint Evo 4G Party

The hottest Android phone, the world's greatest city, and the world's best Android blog. It all came together at Sprint's Evo 4G party last night in New York, and we brought it to you live.

Missed it? Here's a recap:

Live at the party | Pricing announced | Hands-on video | Voice-data demo | Video-chat demo

Let's take a look at the fun stuff, after the break.

Partying with Sprint and the Evo 4G

Sprint Evo 4G party in New York City

Looks like we found the joint, huh? Hell's Kitchen is a rather nice place on a spring afternoon.

What do you drink at a Sprint event? Why, a grapefruit "4G," of course.

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse broke the good news -- the Evo 4G will be available June 4 for $199.

A lot of buzz words going on, and a lot of cheerleading the partnership between Disney (above) and Sprint with the launch of the Evo 4G. As part of the event, they screened "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." (We didn't watch it. Got some work done instead.)

We got a demo of the new version of YouTube that gives ultra-high quality videos when you're connected to 4G. And it was pretty darn good.

Phil, you are the man, give me your connections so I can attend an event like this.

yeah really, Dan Hesse is a man that I have wanted to meet for years! I really respect him. I want your connections too, so I can meet him! Seriously, most people have celebrities.... I have CEO's.

Dude, you have like 5 reposts of the exact same thing. I'm pretty sure you can delete them or at least change them to something else.

I've been trying to find some accessories for the evo but I can't find none doesanybody know a website I can find hdmi cable n a bluetooth for it?

I currently use a palm pre for personal use and I have a droid incredible for work and I can say for certain that they incredible is by far the better phones of the 2. WebOS could be amazing but without any hardware updates, I struggle staying with the platform.

For me, I am not buying an Evo just because there isn't 4g anywhere near me and I am sure as hell not going to pay an extra $10 for something I will never use...though I wan't to replace my pre so what do i get? I already essentially have the Evn (cept with smaller screen and no dvi out).

P.S. This was supposed to be a reply to fonefanatic

Ugh! I am really torn on this. This phone looks absolutely amazing! I am on a Palm Pre and considering a switch to this phone. Thing is I have never used an Android phone and I really do like WebOS alot. Decisions Ugh I am so torn on what to do!

I'm on a palm pre, and I am moving. I love webOs, but Palm has been very laggy (webOs too) in getting new hardware out to sprint people.

I have been a Palm Pre fanboy since day 1 as well. I love everything about WebOS. It looks like Android 2.1 has caught up to many of the WebOS core features (multitasking, Synergy, univeral search), plus I like the all concepts behind Android as well. Now with the mile-long spec sheet of the Evo 4G (not to mention 4G!!!!) there is no way anyone in their right mind that is up for upgrade should pass up the Evo 4G!

dan hesse is not the man he's a liar.he promised that 4G would be free for all sprint customers and now he wants to charge us $10 extra month.he a thief.

You've got to be kidding me. When are you going to understand the meaning of this $10 buy-up? It's not because of 4G. That's why it's not optional. It's because of the innate other-worldly data capabilities of the Evo! Just consider the amount of data the Evo will be accessing and transmitting in a month versus the Hero, for example, knowing Evo's specs, features, and apps, I completely understand the $10 buy-up, 4G or no 4G. If Sprint were to release a 4G capable Nextel flip phone, for example, the $10 buy-up I'm sure would not apply!
Think about it this way: If Sprint made PC laptops that accessed all the Sprint services (TV, radio, NFL, navigation, etc) and with all the data enabled third party apps, would you really expect them to give you all the data you want for the same price as a little 4G Samsung Instinct? Of course not.

Minus NFL. That service is now on Verizon.

I think Sprint should have been mum on the costs, so as not to create grumblings about "well, you said..." Nevertheless, I don't think at $10 4G premium is outrageous. The only caveat might be for people who live in non-4G areas. They shouldn't have to pay the $10 premium until 4G is available in their market. Maybe that exemption is available.

For $110, you get unlimited talk, web, text, 4G (where available) and WiMax for up to eight devices. Not bad, considering unlimited talk, text and data on Verizon and AT&T runs around $120.

Why get the $99+10 Unlimited Everything plan when you can get the Anytime Mobile, 450 Everything plan for $69+10?! Who calls landlines more than 450 mins/month anyway? Plus you still get free nights (at 7pm) and weekends. So with this said the real comparison is $79/mo with Sprint Everything Data vs $119/mo with VZ!

yeah really, Dan Hesse is a man that I have wanted to meet for years! I really respect him. I want your connections too, so I can meet him! Seriously, most people have celebrities.... I have CEO's.

I hope on launch day there will be a ton of accessories offered by best buy and also the sprint store

Hey Phil, any idea is the car dock had the built in speaker like the Nexus One car dock does?

I've been struggling with the $10 fee, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it but I sent an email to Dan@sprint.com and one of his many secretaries sent me this reply:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting us through Dan@Sprint.com. From reviewing your
email, I understand you have expressed your concerns regarding the $10
Premium Data fee which is to experience the data that EVO provides. EVO
users will typically consume more data, and the Premium Data Fee assures
they have the bandwidth to do it. I understand your concern regarding
this fee put in place. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and will be
forwarded to the appropriate team for further review. If you have any
additional questions or concerns I can be reached at 757-223-3230 M-F
9am-6pm EST.

Thank you We value your business and appreciate the opportunity to
address your concerns. Please reply to this email or visit
Sprint.com/mysprint if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,
Karen W.

So that was the email. IF it's true why they are charging the $10, then I support it, but if it's just for profit padding then that is different.

You are really struggling? I mean at $79/mo that is still at least $10 cheaper than a similar plan from VZ or ATT! Just consider the amount of data the Evo4G will be accessing and transmitting in a month versus the Hero, for example, knowing Evo's specs, features, and apps, I completely understand the $10 buy-up, 4G or no 4G. If Sprint were to release a 4G capable Nextel flip phone, for example, the $10 buy-up I'm sure would not apply!
Think about it this way: If Sprint made PC laptops that accessed all the Sprint services (TV, radio, NFL, navigation, etc) and with all the data enabled third party apps, video conferencing, YouTube HQ, etc, would you really expect them to give you all the data you want for the same price as a little 4G Samsung Instinct? Of course not.

BS! I'm on Verizon now with a Droid, and I pay $75, vs $80 for the EVO. I get unlimited data, 450 minutes, & 250 text messages, but like many folks, that's all I need. So the EVO can be MORE expensive, depending on what plan you need.

You people keep spreading lies that Sprint is always cheaper than Verizon. It is just not true.

Plus I get a 22% corporate discount from Verizon off the total because of where I work. I'm not even sure yet if Sprint will give me a corporate discount at all. So switching over to Sprint for the EVO looks to cost me quite a bit more.

Are you drunk? I said compare SIMILAR plans from Sprint and VZ! The plan you presented is not even close to similar! How can you possibly only use 450 minutes a month?? Not to talk about a cap on your text messages! Even with that you still only save $5 a month with your stripped down, non-4G VZ plan! And yes Sprint offers a 15% corp. discount.

Just went to VZ's website looking for new service, SIMILAR to Sprint's Evo4G $69.99 + $10 add-on plan.

1) Let's see, VZ's 450 Talk & Text = $59.99/mo... oh but it's not unlimited mobile to mobile like Sprint, it's only 450 daytime!
2) Now let's add unlimited data for $29.99/mo

That is roughly $89.99/mo for 450 mins, unlimited text, unlimited data

1) Let's get unlimited talk and text for $89.99/mo, that by itself is already $10 more than Sprint Evo4G's $79.99/mo everything premium data!

2) Now let's add unlimited data for $29.99/mo

That is roughly $119.99/mo! $40 more expensive per month than Sprint's Evo4G plan, with NO VZ 4G!!!

If you read this comment, then you are no longer allowed to bitch about Evo4G's $10 add-on!

Uh, how does Verizon's unlimited plan get involved here? The base $80 Evo plan only includes 450 daytime minutes.

The only advantages over Verizon's plans, in a non-WiMax area, are unlimited text and mobile to mobile. Unlimited text is not compelling if you have GV and using an Android phone w/o GV misses out on a lot.

mobile to mobile might be compelling but that will depend on each individuals circumstance. Verizon includes VZW to VZW which is the same thing for many people.

The $10 fee is nothing short of a money grab by Sprint. It may have been reasonable if their WiMax footprint was bigger but as it is the fee is a major turn off. Just another example of Sprint dropping the ball. AT&T could get away with a $10 iPhone fee but there is nothing compelling enough about the Evo to make it worth it.

I will take VZW's larger network and $240 savings (over a 2 yr contract), thanks.

Saying it is for "expanded data capabilities" just makes me laugh. How often would you video chat on your phone or use it to stream video over the Internet to your TV? I can't imagine that Sprint's 3G network can stream HD video very well.

You are telling me that unlimited VZ to VZ, 450 minutes, 250 texts, and unlimited data (no 4G speed), and 3G coverage in rural sparsely populate areas for $89/mo is a better deal than unlimited ANY MOBILE, 450 minutes, UNLIMITED texts, and unlimited data including 4G speed for $79/mo?! You have to be either brainwashed by VZ or just plain delusional!!

I am telling you that 450 mins, Unlimited VZ to VZ and Unlimited texts (via GV) on a network that is vast for $69 is a better deal than 450 mins, Unlimited Mobile to Mobile and unlimited data on a smaller network for $80. If you spend all of your time in a 4G area and are a heavy data user then it Sprint is a better deal. However, that does not describe most people or even most users of this site.

I can't believe this! How can you seriously be this dense! You are comparing a non-data VZ plan with Google Voice as your text messaging conduit to a Sprint Everything Premium Data Plan!!!! The two aren't even close to similar! Then you want to talk about which plan most represents the general public after using stating that you use GV as your text messaging system!! Is anybody else reading this crap?!

First, GV is so freaking exclusive you have to wait weeks just to get an invite for the service! And you think VZ customers are the only ones with access to GV??

Second, 450 mins + VZ to VZ is NOT better than 450 mins + SPRINT to ANY, even if VZ's network extends more in to rural barely populated areas! Do you know how huge your bill is going to be after you use up 450 day mins?! The two options are not even close in a real world comparison!

Third, you are deleting major elements of the VZ plan like only 250 texts, and like the $30 unlimited data charge from VZ, which Sprint includes plus 4G speed, then comparing the package prices as if you are getting the same features!! Seriously? Are you kidding me?!

If you want to compare a Sprint talk plan to VZ's talk plan, do that! Because you are definately NOT comparing a VZ unlimited data plan to a Sprint unlimited data plan, which is what smartphone users require!!

Why would they hold this party in NY, there's no 4G there. It would've made more sense to have in Chicago or another city that has 4G coverage.

New York is getting 4G very soon. People relate to New York more than other cities as well. Also they had a mini 4G tower in the building to show off the 4G capabilities of the EVO. I mean come on. It's New York. :)

Sprint will be announcing NYC this year. There are already sites up all over the metro. I'd suspect when EVO is released, a good chunk of NYC will be unofficially up and running.

Does anyone know if the Evo will come with the cool ruberized case like the HTC HD2 on TMO? Then all I'd need is a screen protector. :)

I'm really having a hard time understanding why people are bitching so much about the $10 add on for the EVO. Unlimited data to be able to actually take full advantage of what the EVO is capable of (sans hotspot) is not really a bad deal. Especially when you consider the $79/month is still nearly $30-40 cheaper than anything comparable with Verizon, and still a bit cheaper than Jesus Phone on ATT (plan, data, navigation, unl messaging).

Completely agree with you. Then I continue to hear talk about losing potential customers over the $10 which still doesn't make sense to me. Compare it to someone who's looking to by an iPhone or Incredible and Sprint looks pretty good to me.

You are full of crap and spreading lies. Is that you Dan Hesse?

See my answer above to Ecoteric. I already pay $5 less per month for my Droid, and that is before my 22% corporate discount.

He is not lying! Go read my plan pricing breakdown above in response to your comment above!

I think its a matter or principle for me oversight. Sprint has told me that they don't have any plans to bring 4G to where I live - why should I have to pay for it? For me its as simple as that.

Everyone comes back with "well sprints everything unlimited plan is cheaper than xyz etc etc" - well its like I don't have unlimited everything on AT&T, but I do have unlimited data and I'm paying about $58 dollars a month.

So yes - Sprint for me would cost me more money with the 10$ 4G tax, for a service I CANNOT USE.

Get it now?

In a non 4g network it is the same as an incredible, except with a bigger screen and hd video camera, so they should not be charging a $10 fee, Verizon doesn't. However even with the fee it is cheaper than Verizon.

You're crazy man! In addition to the bigger screen, it's also got video conferencing capability with it's front facing camera! And an HDMI out that you can plug into your big screen for live streaming to your TV. Think about how much data is being transmitted during a video conference! Even on just 3G, Sprint would be giving away way too much data compared to normal Sprint smartphones. And like you said, $79/mo is still at least $10 cheaper than VZ and ATT and they don't have any 4G, video chat, Sprint services, etc.

Just went to VZ's website looking for new service, comparable to Sprint's Evo4G $69.99 + $10 add-on plan.

1) Let's see, VZ's 450 Talk & Text = $59.99/mo... oh but it's not
unlimited mobile to mobile like Sprint, it's only 450 daytime!
2) Now let's add unlimited data for $29.99/mo

1) Let's get unlimited talk and text for $89.99/mo, that by itself is already $10 more than Sprint Evo4G's $79.99/mo everything premium data!

2) Now let's add unlimited data for $29.99/mo

That is roughly $119.99/mo! $40 more expensive per month than Sprint's Evo4G plan, with NO 4G!!!

If you read this comment, then you are no longer allowed to bitch about Evo4G's $10 add-on!

Anyone on the fence comparing WebOS to Android , get over it , there is NO COMPARISON , webos is not even close to Android , I dumped my Pre a long time ago to come over to Android even when it was just Android 1.5 , and to me even then there was no comparison , as for now I have the Incredible on Verizon who by the way is also going to open up there own 4G network sometime this year , but what I like most about Verizon even though they are a bit more expensive than most , is there coverage and 3g coverage , I get 3g everywhere I go and its plenty fast enough for whatever I need to do , 4g is great but is it really needed ?? I dont think so but whatever . I hoopla over this phone ( like all others ) will be very short lived , it will be surpassed by another better phone in a month or 2 after the release of the Evo ( if it even takes that long ) lets see if this phone can pull sprint out of the red , The pre didnt do it and I doubt this phone will do it either ...

VZ's 4G footprint won't even be 10% of Sprint's 4G by the end of 2010! And how can you act like 4G speed (5-10x faster than 3G) is irrelevant when it gives you the opportunity do thing like HD video conferencing on a front-facing camera (last I looked VZ's Incredible has neither a front-facing camera, 720p HD video capture, nor 4G speed)! Not to mention YouTube HQ. You have go to be delusional man!

The reason the Pre "didn't pull Sprint out of the red" because it was quite possibly the worst marketing campaign in the history of marketing! Yet everyone knows that the year old Pre is currently only second to the Incredible. The Evo is the world's first 4G phone! That by itself is a BIG selling point, not to talk about it's mile-long spec sheet that blows away even the new iPhone! So you keep your Incredible for $199 and $89+/mo. And I will upgrade my Pre to the Evo4G for $199 and $79/mo! LOL

Actually, VZW plans to have about 90% of Clearwire footprint. Clear claims they will have 120 million population coverage with 4G. VZW claims they will cover 100m pops. Clear has demonstrated they are on track. VZW so far has just been talk, but they have the resource to pull it off.

We are talking present time up to the end of 2010! Not by 2012! There is no way VZ can go from almost no footprint to 100 million people in 6 months!

I have no need for HD video conferencing or a front facing 1.3 mega pixel camera and if you truly believe Sprint 4G network will surpass Verizons when they introduce it think again , Sprint doesnt have anywhere near the capability or cash verizon does and there dominace of 4g will be very short lived and like I said I get 3g everywhere I go with great speed ? Do you on Sprint ?? probably not and if you do your one of the lucky ones . Sprint may do it 1st but it certainly wont be the best and if think they can out do Verizon I have a bridge to sell you CHEAP !!!!

http://phones.verizonwireless.com/3g/#comingSoon_4G

As for the Pre , it didnt do well because its a piece of crap, I went through 6 of those pieces of JUNK with there platstic screens, wobbley keyboards and slider mechanism , loose battery connections that caused the phone to shut off and reset , I could go on and on with this stuff about that phone .Its JUNK plain and simple , even Sprint realized this

You are also wrong with pricing , ( well with me anyway ) I have 4 phones on my acount , 2 of which have unlimited text and data and I pay less than $150 per month for all with my corporate discount ,( Sprint cant touch that price !!! ) also got the Incredible itself for $149.00 . Dont get me wrong I like the Evo very much I just never would switch back to Sprint to get it especially since it will only be a matter of time before verizon offers a far better phone on a far better network , I think the is to big as is the HTC HD2 ( same size phone ) But it has things most will never use and there will never be a time I will watch any 2 hour movie on my phone ( I do have a life ) , You tube clips is about the extent of video needs on a any phone I own , Enjoy it when it comes out as I am sujre you will , bottom line is its not the end all and many people will not agree with you or your taste of phones , I honestly dont see many women carrying that thing around or having much interest in it . The rage will be very short lived , you can count on that

Everything you are talking about is specific to your situation ONLY!! I am talking about overall features availability to smartphone using customers. Why don't you just go get a flip phone and remove yourself from this thread!

Just because you dont like my opinions does not give you the right to criticize me , what I talk about is specific to a lot more people than me , and I am sure I have had and used cell phones before you were even born , I can give you several flip phones if you want them , you dont like it ? remove yourself from this thread , BTW shouldnt you be in school right now ??

That was quite possibly the most illogical, incoherent, off-base comment I have ever seen! I don't have the right to criticize bc I don't agree with your opinion? Are you kidding me? That is the very crux of free speech!! You say that you have been using cell phones since I was born? SO WHAT??!! THESE SMARTPHONES HAVE ONLY BEEN AROUND SINCE THIS DECADE! Then you want to try to make it personal by saying I should be in school. How unbelievably lame are you?! You can't form a logical, reasonable argument, so you have to try to make it personal instead! FYI, I am 28 years old with 2 degrees, my own start-up company, and a home-office!

So wait.. they did the unveiling of the Evo and 4G in New York, a city that doesn't even have 4G coverage yet. Tell me how that makes sense.

They should have done it Chicago or Atlanta, whom have 4G. However, NYC, LA, Miami, Boston, and host of other cities are getting 4G this year!

damn iam really gettin tired of people complaining about this $10 increase for the evo...if ur broke don't buy it..its that simple... I've had the simply everything plan for a while ow which is $99...only reason I haven't switched to the 69$ plan is cuz I'd have to wait a year from that date to upgrade..and it aint happenin...im gettin my evo june 4th as an upgrade and then puttin my plan down to the 69$ +10$ either way I'm gonna be savin on my plan by gettin the evo...ya jus spoiled with this 69$ crap..so if ya can't afford it jus stay with the wack hero or pre and wait til you get a better job chumps!

Its not a question of being broke - I bought an unlocked Nexus One... I don't think its right I should have to pay $10 for 4G when Sprint has confirmed more than once there are no plans to bring 4G to where I live.

If it was where I lived I WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM PAYING FOR IT!
