In Short

The first round of Xperia X phones

During Mobile World Congress 2016, Sony unveiled the Xperia X line of phones, which includes the Xperia X, Xperia X Performance, Xperia XA and Xperia XA Ultra. The four devices are mostly similar on the outside, but a few tweaks on the internals, as well as different screen sizes, set them apart.

The XA (the base model, if you will) features 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 2300 mAh battery. The X steps up a bit with 32GB of storage, 3GB RAM and a 2620 mAh battery, while the X Performance tops out with 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM and a 2700 mAh battery. This one also snags an IP65 / IP68 dust-tight & water resistant rating, if you're into that sort of thing. The XA Ultra is the largest in the line, with a 6-inch HD screen — internally it steps down a bit with an octa-core MediaTek processor and just 16GB of storage; it does have a massive 16MP front-facing camera, though.

Xperia XZ and X Compact

Just a few months after the original set of the X series phones went on sale, Sony announced the Xperia XZ and X Compact coinciding with the IFA conference in August 2016. The Xperia XZ is effectively a replacement for the Xperia X Performance, with a very similar design and a 5.2-inch 1080p display, backed up by a Snapdragon 820 processor and 3GB of RAM. The X Compact is a smaller, plastic version with a 4.6-inch 720p display and slower Snapdragon 650 processor.

Both phones offer a brand new camera feature, though: 5-axis image stabilization for the 23MP image sensor, enabling much better low light photos and smoother video.
