Froyo on the Epic 4G

For those of you dying to get your hands on an official Android 2.2 build for the Sprint Epic 4G, it looks like one has found its way onto at least one phone. The update, which appears to be build DK28, brings the phone up to Android 2.2.1. Doesn't look like it's being pushed to a large number of phones yet -- in fact, the total as we see it so far is one, and it appears to be a dev unit -- so everybody stay tuned. [XDA Developers]

Update: You want the link to the DK28 update?  Of course you do!  Grab it direct from Google right here.  For questions about the installation procedure, be sure to visit the Epic 4G forums for all the answersThanks dieselg5!

Froyo around the corner? Good! I'm not in a hurry though.

Paul627g says:

Possibly an early Christmas gift for us Epic owners???

zjorda42 says:

with it being an official build we might just be a week away from an ota

Don't jinx it!

Since it's an official test, Sprint might get it out by February.

Now if it shows in December, we all can be happily surprised :P

uranidiot says:

where is it I want it gimme gimme I want it now give me the link now!
Anyway these leaks have been tested for over a month now. Someone in the ppcgeeks forums said that it would be release mid december. BETA TEST OVER RELEASE It ALREADY!

frozencloud says:

I guess this could be used as evidences that it's not Samsung that is slow with the updates, it's ur respective "Carrier"

uranidiot says:

yeA BUT ALL FOUR CARRIERS? TOO COINCIDENTAL.

zjorda42 says:

its just one more thing sprint is trying to be first at..... first u.s. galaxy s phone to get 2.2.......... tht doesnt sound as good as first to 4g. lol

bkrodgers says:

I wish Google would hurry up and announce Gingerbread, just so that Samsung has the shame of not being able to get an update out to their flagship device before the next version is announced.

zjorda42 says:

lol that would be horrible.... samsungs flagship devices being 2 software versions behind phones like the nexus one and the droid which has been out forever it seems

Comineeyeaha says:

Well, rumor has it that we'll see the announcement/release on Monday, so Samsung is about to be embarrassed BIG time!

This is why, ultimately, I'm glad I didn't get the Fascinate.

dieselg5 says:

LOL tell that so Sony X10 owners that are still waiting for 2.1 in the US

WildmanRuss says:

Has anyone tried this yet?

Retrokid223 says:

Damn epic users get all the froyo leaks.. What about us fascinate users? im getting upset >:D

gtg465x says:

Practically EVERY Galaxy S phone (international editions, Epic, Vibrant, Captivate) has either official Froyo or a leaked build of Froyo. Except for the Fascinate. LMAO!

One more reason to switch to the NowNetwork.

Just installed it. Wow. Seems to work great. Love the new interface. Go for it. Will let you know if I have any problems.

1414H77 says:

New music player...

tapoutbeast says:

You installed the 2.2 for the epic?

1414H77 says:

Yes.

tapoutbeast says:

You downloaded it to the computer then to the phone?

Paul627g says:

Sounds good... Maybe i will give it a try... Newbee here... Any good suggestions so I don't mess up?

Paul,

Search for .zip install in the forum (I can't post linnks here) and look for Andrew Rofollo's post 'How-To Update to DI18 manually'. It was created for the last manual update, but just follow the directions using the new file. You'll be good to go!

Just installed it...there's a great deal of lag but I just restarted to see if it improves at all.

1414H77 says:

I saw that too, but the lag was due mostly to it indexing for the first time all the media files (music, etc.). After that the lag was no more.

1414H77 says:

So far great. Has the voicemail to text feature (free trial for month), new widgets, etc. Went to market, downloaded flash- working fine.

1414H77 says:

Only thing I do not like is that you can no longer access bookmarks via the menu button- you have to to up to the top right corner and and hit the button there on the browser- that's a froyo thing.

dieselg5 says:

Quadrant and linpack scores are horrendous though, 850-950 for quadrant and ~14 for linpack

gtg465x says:

Horrendous? Droid X and Droid 2 only score higher in quadrant because of an inflated IO score and they score the same in linpack. Not to mention your Epic beats everything in graphics benchmarks.

uranidiot says:

BECAUSE ITS ONLY AT 800MHZ?

The lag is also gone for me. I really like the "balloon" look to the stock messaging app. So far, so good.

1414H77 says:

Agree-messaging app better. In general the whole thing looks better thought out.

Paul627g says:

@locationman52, Thanks friend. Checked out the forum posting by Andrew and it sounds simple enough.. Gonna try it out in a little bit. :)

I can't get it to work can anyone help

Mobius360 says:

Got mine working. System just rebooted and made me re-enter google password and now it is running a "checking for software update".

atest123 says:

Quick question, do I have to be updating from dk18 to go to DK28, or can I update from stock?

bb5683 says:

I installed DK28 on my Epic 4G, And it seems to have changed to look of some of the apps, and my phone is funning much faster.... As for updates, the only Market app it asked me to update was Flash 10.1, But it is a none destructive install. And it was very very very easy to install!

bb5683 says:

One thing I did notice is that if you use the Stock Launcher , and you press on the App drawer , It takes a second to load, Luck for me, I'm using Launcher Pro Plus, Touch Wiz Launcher also works very well. They both seem to run faster!

All of the optimizations are in place. This update is SO much faster than the leaked beta build.

bb5683 says:

I had that problem at first, Don't rename the file Upgrade.zip just name it upgrade because the file will add the zip to the end, once I did that... the upgrade went straight trough without any problems.

bb5683 says:

I mean Update.

Okay I haven't had luck which suck, I have download the file and named it update.zip but ever time I am at the recovery screen I receive a fail message so do I need to put in a certain folde?

You have to install the new DK28 Modem via Odin

oregonbruin says:

The update was so easy and it was so worth it. I am still finding improvements/ changes that it has been fun searching the phone. I love the 270 degrees of rotation, the way-improved music interface (love the EQ and CD view), and too many other things to list...okay, one more-the true customizations of the launcher, app lists, and more! Just download it, it's like a treasure hunt!

JDowling says:

Downloaded and upgraded. Now my camera and anything that uses sound (aka ringtones, text notifications, etc) force closes. I can make calls, but because of the force close, I cannot receive any calls.
Also my gallery is not pulling up any pictures. I can find the pics on Astro, but it force closes when I try to open.
Any suggestions?

gbonham says:

I was having the same problems and then I did a factory reset and everything is good now. You lose all your data but everything works.

uranidiot says:

OK MADE A VIDEO. DID IT FAST. NO REHEARSAL. DON'T KNOW Y NO 1 MAKES THESE...ANYWAY IT'S REAL SIMPLE WITH ODIN. Y IS IT LOCKED AT 800MHZ? CAN'T ROOT. Phil Nickinson RULES!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyDwQYVk8Pg

bb5683 says:

There is a faster way to do this, without doing all that.... Just Download the file from Google, then rename it Update, the .zip should auto add it's self. Then mount the phones SD as a disk drive ,drag the file to the disk. Shut the phone off, then hold the down Volume key,Camera key and press the power button at the same time. tap down on the volume down key one time once in the Recovery screen,to hi light the file, and lastly tap the Home key to start to update....

tapoutbeast says:

So that will work? It will automatically update?

mikachu says:

Someone please run a quadrant score on 2.2 please!

and run a highly intensive graphic game and let us know if there is any performance boost? Also how is it playing flash videos like on hulu?

gbonham says:

I just ran a quadrant benchmark and the score was 1024. As far as a graphic intensive game goes Angry birds still looks and plays great.

Okay did. Everything once again but as I remember I rooted my phone and removed some files but also back them up everything went back in place except that damn asphalt5 demo and every time I go thru the steps it shorts that the demo is not available and I get a fail message so what I wanna know is since I wasn't able to install that demo with the software could that be stopping me from updating?

Quis89 says:

I'm having the same issue because I removed the bloat and I get the message because sprintzone is missing. I'm just going to flash back to complete stock via Odin and try again. Hopefully it works.

Paul627g says:

Very nice! Runs so much better than before! Gps used to lock in at 90 or 120 meters at home now its down to 10 meters. Also now I'm locking in a 4G signal too at home and I had to drive a mile or two closer to town to get a signal before. Very happy right now. :-)

zjorda42 says:

couldnt get odin to flash the update to my phone..... keeps closing on me... i already restarted my computer and reinstalled odin.,.. any ideas???????

NateWhite says:

I found that I forgot to uncheck f.reset.time.
And I had problems on my Vista 64 bit, but when I reloaded it on XP32 no problems :D

crajee16 says:

Ok, so is this the official froyo update that Sprint it going OTA later? If so, why are there so many people with issues? Also, is anyone else getting this update via OTA?

beepville says:

After awhile of working with the zip file i finally got it to work! Yes finally!!

zjorda42 says:

what did you have to do?

zjorda42 says:

every time i try to install update from my sd i get this error
E: error in /sdcard/update.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
i've done a factory reset and retried and cleared the cache.... tried alternative method and tht hasnt worked either..... rooted but running stock any ideas?????????

tapoutbeast says:

That's what I did but that error is what keeps popping up everytime I try to load it from the sd

Only problem I have found is with the Media Hub asking for an update and sending to update in the market but nothing was found. This is also the day I received my $50 credit for the media hub... Someone help me!!!
