HTC Desire

What a difference a day makes. Just 24 hours after disappointing a smartphone owner or two, HTC on its UK Facebook Page says the Desire will get Gingerbread after all.

Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire.

Of course, you can always still go the custom route, if that's your thing.

HTC now says the Desire will get Gingerbread after all

If they do it without Sense, it would be best. Sense sucks. Sorry, but it just does. At least after a Gingerbread update. Launcher Pro is better. MUCH BETTER!! It is so liberating to have Sense disabled on my EVO.

You know? I have been a huge LauncherPro fan. I have it on my CM7 Incredible. But lately, I've been playing with Go Ex Launcher and I'm finding I like it better. I wish they'd merge their widgets into the main product as LP has, though.

Well If wildfire S have GB with sense 2.1 and he is weaker than Desire than I don't see why Desire shouldn't get it two.

Wundeful... now all we need to is to alert US Cellular! I spoke to the tech support yesterday and they knew "NOTHING ABOUT an update", much less when one would be available. While I enjoy US Cellular service and coverage area, their tech support needs an update.

I don't think it was a matter of listening or not listening, I think it was a matter of there not being enough space left on the phone for both GB and Sense. So, this is interesting...I wonder what changed?

I think it was because they would have known a while ago if the Desire could handle the update or not. They announced that it wouldn't update for "unknown" reasons and then 24 hours later take it all back. I'm not sure if it was due to public outcry but that seems kind of fishy if you ask me.

i think it IS a matter of listening.
with 512ROM/512RAM (so Ive read) there's space for it. If the developer community can throw together a stable GB ROM for it, there's no reason why they cant pull it off. If I have GB on my MotoDroid w only 256RAM/256ROM, 512 would definitely be able to handle it. IF Moto plans on releasing the Droid3 w only 512MB RAM/ROM next month with GB, then the Desire can handle it.

so what probably changed is they realized how many ppl were pissed off. A larger community of techsavvy ppl buy HTC devices (compared to the % of consumers w Motorola devices) so they have expectations.

I think they listen because Sense is the most accepted Mftr UI vs Samsung or Motorola due to quickly implementing many aftermarket developer features that are popular, being the only one to declare unlocked bootloaders, and being the most responsive to consumer feedback. HTC's got a great thing going, and I hope they keep it up and keep improving. Im tired of Motorola and hoping for a quality Qwerty Slider w the physical design similar to the motorola Droid or Droid3

I'm with you on wanting a querty slider. If the EVO Shift had a slightly larger screen, dual core, and FFC, I'd have gone for it, but I'm sick of devices with low memory and I can't stand the instability of Sense after the GB update.

He isn't the president anymore, relax. Can we please avoid worthless political spam? The guy was just making a joke.

My apologies. i did it for the lulz. I love that they changed their minds but i also understand that HTC has had a PR fiasco as of late. I hope they learn that releasing something to the press... retracting it... and then changing it looks like they have no direction. I wish all android phones could get updates, when the "google branded" release occurs. To say one thing and then "flip flop" makes them look like they have no idea on whether to upgrade or not (or the technical limitations of the devices). They have created a dangerous trend for their company.

It can't be that hard to push Gingerbread without all the Sense features. I mean, how much of Sense _really_ relies on Gingerbread functionality?

You're not going to believe this, but i just heard that the desire WILL NOT GET GINGERBREAD after all, sorry for the confusion everyone.

Yeah but how many of these roms require a partition sd card and a2sd or something like that for them to work?

This will indeed be interesting.

Yes, they do need to drop Sense. Launcher pro is better. More responsive, no crashes, and better battery life. Launcher Pro kills Sense in every way. I'd never go back to Sense and will replace any interface on any new phone I get, with Launcher Pro.

Haha, this is amazing. For the past 24 hours I've been researching how to get a custom ROM onto my Desire. Guess I'll give this a try first then, depending on when it's released.

Are HTC using ext4 SDs now? :P

Honestly, I've said my last goodbyes to HTC now. In my eyes this year they have become a joke, first started way back with the Desire Z/G2 with the funky bootloader situation then locking them down since then only to flip flop back to the decision not to lock them. Then this?

I got my Desire the day it launched and have loved it. Currently it's on 2.3.4 with MIUI and it's awesome but I'll be getting a Galaxy S2 soon.

I'm looking forward to see how they manage to pick up the pieces and turn this around.

MIUI while looking like iPhone has its added functionality that stock rom doesn't have. Stop bashing it as if it is nothing but a ROM that looks like iPhone. Have you try it? The ROM is not perfect but it sure did add functionality that I use from a day to day basis.

Do all these people that hate on miui try it? I'm a flashaholic so of course I decided to give it a try and its actually pretty awesome. Many times do I wander back to it for a few days before trying something else new. Lemme reiterate : miui is pretty awesome

Looks like HTC is in the mood for games , Sony Ercisson style
You gonna get FroYo next summer , uh no you won't , scratch that you will get GingerBread instead !

Yes, ive tried miui and i didn't like it. Most roms add features so whats the point? If you want an iphone clone get miui and admit you want an iphone clone. If you want an android use another rom.
