T-Mobile G1 To Get Android 2.0 Update Soon ?

Casey Chan News Thursday, 21 January 2010

While more Android devices come out rocking Android 2.0 on launch and other Android phones announcing their intention to do so in the future, any news regarding the very first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, has been nonexistent. We figured that was an omen for bad news because why not announce that 2.0 is coming if it can eventually come, right? Plus, with

Android 2.1 Ported To T-Mobile G1 ?

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 30 December 2009

Rumor alert! Rumor alert! Looks like an Android user has ported Android 2.1 to the device nearest and dearest to our hearts, the T-Mobile G1. Now we don't doubt that the T-Mobile G1, easily the most customizable Android device available, can get the 2.1 update but our impatience just wants us to see it for real, for real. Video will do but downloadable form is even better.

Android 2.0 Source Code Released, Ported to T-Mobile G1

Casey Chan News Saturday, 14 November 2009

Though the Android 2.0 'Eclair' SDK has been available for quite some time and the Motorola DROID runs Android 2.0 perfectly, the Android 2.0 source code has been kept under wraps for some particular reason (underhand deal with Motorola & Verizon?). This meant that all phone manufacturers outside of Motorola could only tinker with Android 1.6. Luckily, that has all changed.

Google has released the...

Google Maps Navigation Ported to T-Mobile G1

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 11 November 2009

It looks like the lovely folks over at xda-developers have already figured out how to port Googles Maps Navigation onto the forever-in-our-hearts T-Mobile G1. The explanation and specific hack is much too smart for us to process but it sounds like its running fine and working well. So even if Android 2.0 is ignoring all the other Android devices other than the DROID, know that the xda-developers...

Android 2.0 Ported Over to T-Mobile G1 !

Casey Chan News Friday, 30 October 2009

Hey, hey! Look at the video above, it's your friendly T-Mobile G1 running the brand spanking new Android 2.0 'Eclair'. It's not a final Android 2.0 build nor is it anywhere close to being an official release, but it's definitely still a sight to see. The amazing minds we have in the Android community decided to port over what they...

Wal-Mart Drops Price of T-Mobile G1 to $48.88, myTouch 3G to $98.88

Casey Chan News Monday, 12 October 2009

Likely in response to the launch of the HTC Hero on Sprint, Walmart has just dropped the price of the original Android phones. Both the T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G received price drops and if you're a current T-Mobile customer wanting to get a taste of Android, it's as good a deal as you're going to find. The T-Mobile G1 is now $48.88 and the myTouch 3G is $98.88 (with new 2-year contract). It's a really great deal considering how many 'dumbphones' are offered for the same price.

T-Mobile Drops Price of T-Mobile G1 to $129.99, Amazon Still a Better Deal

Casey Chan News Thursday, 17 September 2009

T-Mobile just dropped the price of the T-Mobile G1, a device that's still near and dear to our hearts, to $129.99. If you've been following the riveting tale of price drops on the G1, it launched at $179.99 then lowered to $149.99 and is now at $129.99. T...

Will the T-Mobile G1 Continue to Receive Android Updates ?

Casey Chan News Tuesday, 18 August 2009

If reports indicating that the T-Mobile G1 is permanently stuck at Android 1.5 and won't receive further software updates like Donut and Eclair are true, it'll break the hearts of many Android users across the world. According to Android software engineer Dave Sparks, there'll be a time when developers "wont be able to fit the latest [Android] release on the G1's internal flash."

You've got to be kidding me. The T-Mobile G1 isn'...

How To Install HTC Hero's Sense UI to T-Mobile G1

Casey Chan News Thursday, 23 July 2009

T-Mobile G1 Gets a Minor Update

Casey Chan News Saturday, 18 July 2009

They haven't forgot about us yet. The T-Mobile G1 just got a minor software update that includes "permission and bug fixes" for developers, none of the fixes should affect regular users' usage. So what we're assuming is that this software update is the minor one before Android 2.0 Donut gets released and then we'll get another minor one after Donut to fix bugs on Android 2.0.

Friday Fun: Weeds & True Blood Show Love for Android by Using T-Mobile G1

Casey Chan News Friday, 17 July 2009

It's always fun to see mainstream use of the T-Mobile G1 and Android, especially on TV shows we're particularly fond of. Engadget noticed that on both 'Weeds' on Showtime and 'True Blood' on HBO, our cuddly little T-Mobile G1 and Android got a bit of face time. The screenshot above is from 'Weeds' and not only do you get the famed Android Robot...

T-Mobile Expects myTouch 3G to Outsell T-Mobile G1 (duh)

Casey Chan News Monday, 13 July 2009

This shouldn't come as a surprise for anyone but T-Mobile expects the myTouch 3G to outsell the T-Mobile G1. Talk about going on a limb *sarcasm*. T-Mobile CTO, Cole Brodman, expects the myTouch to be successful because of broader appeal, saying that "a vast majority of customers will be new to Android and new to smartphones".

We're definitely going to agree with T-Mobile here, the myTouch is the same Android goodness in a sexier package...

T-Mobile G1, myTouch 3G & HTC Hero Pictured Side-By-Side

Casey Chan News Thursday, 09 July 2009

We don't know how they did it but the guys at Gizmodo managed to get the T-Mobile G1, myTouch 3G and HTC Hero all together in one place, at the same time and get pictures of it. Don't they just look like one big happy family?

The T-Mobile G1, as much as we love it, sticks out like a sore thumb to us. It just doesn't have as clean of lines as...

Wal-Mart Selling T-Mobile G1 for $98.88

Casey Chan News Thursday, 07 May 2009

We're not sure how new (or old) this is but Wal-Mart is reportedly selling the T-Mobile G1 at a discounted $98.88 with 2-year contract. This is a pretty solid deal considering the retail for G1s are $179.99. But if you're not a Wal-Mart fan, Amazon still has the best deal in town, offering the G1 for $97.99.

Anyone still in the market for the T-Mobile G1? Or is everyone now...

T-Mobile Officially Releasing Android 1.5 Cupcake Update to US and UK

Casey Chan News Thursday, 30 April 2009

What a glorious day. After months and months of waiting, T-Mobile is beginning to push out Android 1.5 aka Cupcake to G1 users in the US and UK. After seeing Cupcake made available to Android Dev Phone users we knew that it'd only be time for it to reach us regular G1 folk. No longer will we have to ...

T-Mobile G1 Gets Faked with No Slideout Keyboard - Huh?

Casey Chan News Monday, 27 April 2009

Here's a funny image to brighten your Monday--that picture above isn't a shot of the T-Mobile G1 but rather of a fake, knockoff version that not only fakes the hardware but also runs some knockoff version of Android. It doesn't come with a slideout hardware keyboard and um, what's the point of faking Android? It's free to license!

Either way, it's pretty hilarious and if anyone was to ever spot one of these in real life be sure to send it in!

Stanford's Revolutionary Cinder OS Being Ported to the T-Mobile G1

Casey Chan News Thursday, 16 April 2009

Leave it to the kids at Stanford to cook up a new smartphone OS for mobile devices AND try to port it over to the T-Mobile G1. Even though we're Android-focused here at Android Central we can't help but geek out at a new mobile OS and its potential. We think that the smartphone market is much too young to plateau so early so it's refreshing to see a new take at the operating system.

So what is Stanford's Cinder OS? It's basically an OS ...

Android Already Makes Up 5 Percent of US Smartphone Web Traffic Marketshare

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 25 March 2009

Amazingly (or predictably?), Android has already made its mark on the mobile market. In only a few months time, Android has managed to build up 5% of the US smartphone web traffic.

This could be viewed as surprising to some because the T-Mobile G1 is still relatively new to the game and that it's locked onto the smallest carrier in the United States. On the flip side, it could be an obvious conclusion because the web browsing experience on the...

Android Phones with "Combo" Chip

Brian Hart News Thursday, 12 March 2009

One of the criticisms of T-Mobile's G1 Android phone is the battery life - it's not exactly awe-inspiring. Broadcom Corporation, a member of the Open Handset Alliance, has announced a new "combo" chip which is available for Android handset designers. The new chip (BCM4325) and driver software integrates the FM radio, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi, offering the following advantages:

Is G2 a New Phone or G1 Software Upgrade?

Brian Hart News Thursday, 12 March 2009

There's a bit of confusion in Australia and Asia around the launch of the HTC Dream slated for February 16. The Dream (known to us as the G1) will be launched on Optus, yet a G2 is said to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on the same date. Hmmm.
