Sprint ROM cookers are foaming at the mouth this morning as HTC has released the source code for the Sprint Hero. That means better ROMs, built from the same zeros and ones as HTC. It likely won't contain every line of code you'll find in an official Hero ROM, as close-sourced code doesn't have to be released. But it's already been compiled, and ROMs are cooking as we speak. We can't confirm this report but there's some word floating around that the European HTC Hero will receive the update to Android 2.1 in February. Hey HTC Hero users, maybe you won't be left in the dust after all. A HTC Hero has been caught in the wild running Android 2.1--yeah, you read that right, not Android 1.6, not Android 2.0--but Android 2.1!

Android 2.1 is expected to be a minor update to the major update which was Android 2.0 'Eclair'. Android 2.0 is currently only available on the Motorola DROID--their are still devices stuck on either Android 1.5 or 1.6. It definitely makes more sense for HTC...

Though we're sure all you Sprint HTC Hero users would really appreciate an Android 2.0 software update right about now, it looks like HTC isn't ready to deliver Eclair to you just yet. According to HTC VP of Asia Pacific, Jack Tong, the HTC Hero is enjoying high demand and great sales in the European and Asian markets. Because of such hot demand, it looks like the Hero is in tight supply for the next month or so. According to Tong:
