Sprint Hero 2.1 update delayed again?

Remember that little update thing all us Sprint Hero users were waiting for on May 7 -- Tomorrow?  According to the admin at Sprint's official forums, it ain't coming.  No details of any kind, just what you're seeing in the screen grab above.  As infuriating as it may be, we have to remember that Sprint needs to weigh the need for an update against the end user experience, and only wants to release a product as free of bugs as possible. Ask a Motorola Droid user, they know all about it.

I have confirmed with someone at Best Buy Mobile that the screen shot of the internal memo about the upgrade was legit, so now all we can do is sit back and speculate as to what happened.  My guess is Godzilla attacks.  Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Is it end user experience or chopping down the OS to restrict functions? Of course most everyone here will or can be able to restore wanted functions through rooting the phone. But the average user doesn't have a clue nor seek such functions if not available to them. My case in point is my Tour 9630. Sprint just release a new 5.0 OS the other day so I downloaded and installed. Everything seemed fine until I went to send a video of my daughter to my wife (She was out of town) and the ability to send the video was removed. I had been sending quick little videos of her for the last two days no problem but no way to do it with the new software. Luckily I was still able to upload to twitvid through ubertwitter but still not being able to send directly to my wife's (Rooted with 2.1 :-0) Samsung Moment was annoying. Of course I downgraded right away but still it is annoying and I think Sprint is the one who removed that function in the new OS.

I am a local Sprint Dealer and I have already seen two customers come in with the 2.1 firmware they got from a corporate store. Now the store might be screwing up and handing it out early on accident, but either way I am going in tomorrow to get mine done!

Oh really what state are you from....i might have to go into mine and see myself if this is true and all...

gbhil#AC says:

From what we've seen in the leaks, Sprint and HTC are rolling out the full Android 2.1 experience, with as much of Sense 2.1 as will fit on the phone's memory. Which of course could be a big part of the problem -- trying to pick and choose based on what fits could be causing other things to break.

Unless Sprint or HTC feels like telling us, we'll never know.

Doesn't surprise me a bit either. I figure we'll all be playing the waiting game a while longer.

GO SPRINT. I KNEW I COULD COUNT ON YOU FOR ANOTHER DELAY. SO PREDICTABLE IT'S AMAZING. OS PROBLEMS AGAIN . THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN SAY TO U PEOPLE EXCEPT U. SUCK AND U ALWAYS WILL .THAT IS Y PEOPLE THINK SPRINT IS SECOND RATE BECAUSE OF CRAPPY LIKE THIS . MAN FEEL KIND OF SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE GETTING THE EVO IT WON'T BE ME . SPRINT CAN'T BET THE IPHONE BECAUSE THEY ARE TO SLOW WITH PRODUCT ROLL OUTS. BY THE TIME THEY BRING A NEW PRODUCT TO THE TABLE IT IS ALREADY OLD NEWS. GOOD JOB SPRINT THE LATE NETWORK

crusty says:

F this crap. That's the last straw. I'm quitting Sprint today and taking my chances with Verizon. Sprint can SUCK IT!

yazman666 says:

We all know that sprint will not kill the EVO exitment releasing a 2.1 update for the hero, first: they know that more than 75% of the hero ownwers will en contract this year and if they release the update that could be a reason not to go for the EVO, second the fat that the 2.1 OS would be already available in the hero and it may change a few minds about paying a still unknown price for the evo if they basically will have the same software in the hero..and last because it will ruin the advertising campain for the EVO (not really a campain at all!!!!!)

judasmachine says:

Forget asking a Droid user, they got their update. Ask an Eris user (you hero users' VZW cousins)

kadield says:

Screw it. I'm going to learn how to root and install one of the various 2.1s that are floating around.

rufflez says:

Again and again, if you aren't already running 2.1 on your hero and its something you were waiting for... you only have yourself to blame. Instructions and help can easily be found in the forums.

JayCudi says:

I knew it...can't say I wasn't expecting it not to happen...

Let's see how many android devices that's out there and which update their using...

Verizon:
Droid Incredible (2.1)
Motorola Droid (2.1)
Motorola Devour (1.6)
HTC Droid Eris (1.5)

AT&T:
Motorola Backflip (1.5)

Sprint:
HTC Hero (1.5)
Samsung Moment (1.5)

T-Mobile:
G1 (1.6)
MyTouch (1.6)
Samsung Behold II (1.5)
Motorola Cliq (1.5)

AT&T/T-Mobile:
Nexus One (2.1)

jeffsanace says:

Just install the leaked 2.1 RUU. I've been running it since it came out. Have had zero problems. No friendstream or live wallpapers, other than that its the full non rooted 2.1 and everything works. Still trying to find a working apk for them , you can get the 3d gallery apk from xda forums. Works except camera button. Good Luck, not that you'll need it.

grifforama says:

What a surprise.
Verizon, here I come.

gbhil#AC says:

Good luck with that, because you know they have such a better track record getting first gen hardware updated to 2.1

Darkseider says:

And of all these:

Verizon:
Droid Incredible (2.1)
Motorola Droid (2.1)
Motorola Devour (1.6)
HTC Droid Eris (1.5)

AT&T:
Motorola Backflip (1.5)

Sprint:
HTC Hero (1.5)
Samsung Moment (1.5)

T-Mobile:
G1 (1.6)
MyTouch (1.6)
Samsung Behold II (1.5)
Motorola Cliq (1.5)

AT&T/T-Mobile:
Nexus One (2.1)

The only ones that haven't been rooted are the Backflip and Devour. The others are all enjoying 2.1 goodness. The G1, the grand daddy, the old man, runs 2.1 like a champ. So it should be no problem for any of the current factory 1.5/1.6 devices to run 2.1. I have no idea what the hold up is for any of these at this point but it is getting ridiculous.

macdonx says:

F*&$ You SPRINT and HTC!!!

Its not really HTC's fault at all if you haven't seen Hero non sprint has 2.1. The issue is Sprint holding it up because they dont like the idea of not controlling the devices fully. Im tempted to root mine and say fuck Sprints software Android has all that kind of stuff anyways.

gbhil#AC says:

No Hero has 2.1 from the factory. In fact, HTC even says that GSM Heros will get 2.1 after Sprint Heros do.

Loading the leaked test version(s) and spending a few hours at the debugger makes it easy to see that it's just not ready.

I can look at unique IPs for downloads and determine that the number of times the leaked version I threw together got downloaded comes up to about 9 percent of Sprint Hero users. I average about 130 requests for support per day. If 9%=130, then the other 91% = about 1,315 calls to support DAILY to address the bugs in the current (as of mid April) 2.1 release. And that's just me. There's other guys in the forums (hey hey Beezy and rufflez) that actively mod and support it as well.

Am I happy about it? Hell no. But I can come to grips that if it's too buggy, it can;t get released.

See if Sprint would just come out and say something like that then as pissed as i would be it would be better then what they are doing. All they are doing is putting fuel to the fire and they wonder why they lose customers like they do.... i just dont get how you can get 2.1 from htc for the hero providing your not a Sprint user.

gbhil#AC says:

Agreed. Nobody likes being left in the dark.

rizzay1 says:

Sprint is just gonna keep on delaying the update and when it comes down to it they are just going to say they cannot update it due to memory problems..

wildviper72 says:

I had called sprint store today about a question for my Samsung Moment and asked about Android 2.1 the rep said the update release will be tommarow she said she recieved an email on it from corperate, So i guess we will wait and see?

Yes we will wait and see. Seems like a typical sprint problem, every part of the company gets completely different information. Some big companies have problems with this but sprint is the worst at it. I am sure the update will come out eventually because they want to show people that they can update android.

My feeling about this is that if they dont update their current phones to 2.1, who would ever buy an EVO? Why would you buy a "new" phone to automatically have old software the second it comes out? If sprint does that it might just put them out of business. Just my two cents.

lb0399 says:

Agreed

ext6ews224 says:

Now, I am really confused. I talked to a Best Buy rep at my local store and they said that the update is happening as planned. they "double checked". I will be there 1st thing in the morning to see if it is really true. We all have been waiting entirely too long for this update. Yes, there have been several dates, but it should have happened by now. With the EVO around the corner, maybe Sprint is delaying on purpose. Maybe Sprint is expecting huge sales from the EVO for several reasons. It will be the only phone running 2.1. Maybe Sprint feels that some sales will be lost if the Hero is updated to 2.1 beforehand. Either way it goes, we need the update. I believe its already ready but for some reason just being delayed. I don't think it has any thing to do with bugs or errors.

this is ridiculous! I really hate Sprint, if they're worried about losing customers then you lost my service if I don't get my update tomorrow and I hope someone from Sprint reads this! I'm sick of it.

I'd rather go to another company that has more choices of Android phones or one that already has the newest firmware. Sprint has 2 Android phones... the Hero is good and the Moment is just horrible. Why can't we get phones like the MotoCLIQ?

jc78 says:

From Twitter today:

"sprint Android users:Sprint continues to work closely w Samsung/HTC on 2.1, on track to be avail Q2. Sprint had hoped to have this resolved by now."

and then one minute later...

"sprint Many thanks to our customers for your continued patience as we work to bring you a positive experience with the 2.1 upgrade."

Well, THAT doesn't look good.

hintzilla says:

HTC is doing a good job at making me sure that I don't want a phone with Sense again.

It's really kinda amazing how many people treat a leaked internal document stating that the upgrade was going to be loaded into internal systems on the 7th as a personal promise by Sprint to them that 2.1 was going to be available to them and are getting pissed when misunderstood leaked information doesn't quite pan out. "Early May" is what we were told and it's still "Early May". If you want the 2.1 upgrade so badly, you can already find it, just don't complain if it breaks your phone.

evil_ash says:

The funniest part about it is that it wasn't even a Sprint document that was released. You would think the way people are acting that Sprint owed them money or something.

Ok I work for Radio Shack and i know a lot of Sprint authorized personnel, and i was told by them that their not releasing 2.1 to the Hero or the Moment because it might loose their sales in HTC EVO, which does not make any sense at all, because the people who have a hero or mement they cant upgrade to the EVO untill later next year, and the people who wants the EVO are NOT going to go to the hero nor the moment just because they updated to 2.1 none of my contacts could say they liked this decision sprint made, but that's what their doing, once its close to EVO comming out, they would be more then happy to realese 2.1 for everyone. NOW that BULL SH^& because the people who love and have the moment or hero are waiting since November... and they have been waiting patiently and have grown 4 to 9 gray hairs in the mean time from sprints promising their 2.1 update...

I love sprint, i love their phones, i love their cheap and awesome plans but come on we went the 2.1 for moment and hero, so Sprint stop thinking people are not going to the EVO just because the hero and moment are updating to the 2.1....!
