Nexus One on AT&T 3G (left)

Meet the new Nexus One, same as the old Nexus One. Only this one has AT&T's -- yeah, yeah, and some Canadian carriers', too -- 3G bands built in. Otherwise, it's exactly the same hardware (so far as we can tell without a teardown) and software (Android 2.1-update 1).

Otherwise, all the usual bells and whistles are there, and I've already got CyanogenMod up and running just fine. Anybody else get theirs yet, too? Video hands-on after the break.

Phil, man, you have GOT to stop biting your nails. If all we see is your hands and a phone in the reviews, show some self control :)

I know ... I know ... I've thought about that. But it's the only vice I have left!!!!!!

What calendar widget is that?

Pure calendar widget.

All the things that should have been covered since it's the SAME PHONE.

congrats!

1. any 3G to edge / low signal level issues?
2. what is your average upload/download speeds using fcc/serverloc and speedtest/serverloc?
3. what are your edge upload/download speeds (make the selection in settings)?

thanks!

Oops..Wrong comment reply...

All the things that should have been covered since it's the SAME PHONE.

This is representative:

Your results may vary, as you're not in my house. :P

Got Shook says:

Sounds like 70's pron. LOL

What about the 3G issues? Are they still there? I know AT&T has more 3G coverage so there shouldn't be any 3G to Edge transitions for no reason. I'm just going from what I read about the T-mobile version.

dextroz says:

Also let us know the battery experience :-)

gautch says:

At 1:09 you mention the trackballs are slightly different, but it looks like the bar at the top (reads "About phone") is a different shade too...
Any thoughts?

gautch says:

Oh maybe its the screen brightness. See the text is brighter on the left one.

Yeah. The CyanogenMod doesn't have the option to check for OS updates, so that's what they don't line up.

JimBo says:

I tried to install CyanogenMod, but when it booted up I had no radio. I had to restore from the backup. They only step I did not take is updating the radio, as I figured that would be the latest already.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Remember to wipe? #adviceforlife

JimBo says:

Yah, I did a wipe before the install of the mod. Thanks for the suggestion however.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

they should've just made 1 phone to include all the bands. Really how much more actual physical space does the AT&T 3G radio take? It would make selling these devices at lot easier too.

The short answer -- and we got this from HTC -- is that it's just not possible. These things do take space, among other issues, and we're all just gonna have to get over it. :-/

dm33 says:

RIM does it. Of course its possible. They need to realize they'd save more money than it costs by having to make and stock only one phone instead of two.

bkrodgers says:

Granted it's a larger phone, but the Touch Pro2 manages to squeeze in both a CDMA and GSM radio. Not sure if it supports both AT&T and T-Mo 3G bands, but I have to think it'd be possible. It just may not let them bring the phone in at the size -- or price -- they want.

Still, it's a major flaw in their strategy to break you from your carrier and sell direct. Even if the phone is unlocked, for all intents and purposes you're still locked to the carrier if a major feature (3G) only works on that carrier. If they sold a phone unlocked that had a CDMA radio that Sprint, Verizon or USCell would let you activate as well as a SIM card slot and the appropriate radios for 3G AT&T and TMo, I'd buy it unlocked in a heartbeat.

Granted, there are other reasons to go unlocked and contract free, such as not wanting to be under contract when 4G is rolling out next year. And on TMo, you (rightly so) get a lower monthly payment in exchange for not demanding/receiving a phone subsidy. But on the other carriers, you pay the same monthly rate, so if you think you're going to stay with them for 2 years, there's no reason not to go subsidized.

Got my AT&T 3G Nexus One today (FedEx was SLOW to deliver *cries*) and she's resting (charging up) before I turn her on and rock her world.

I'm excited.

Never did hear if they fixed the Exchange Calendar issue...is it working right on this one?

very nices good idea.

entwined82 says:

Phil, the trackball difference could be due to use/time that the T-Mo 3G one is more gray than white seeing as you have owned it since January. My blackberry 8330's trackball is filthy but it wasn't like that when I bought it.

I'd compare a new T-Mo and AT&T N1 and I bet you'll see they are identical.

Yeah, I thought about that, and that's probably the case. Was just trying not to blame my grubby thumbs. :/

entwined82 says:

heh understandable. This is why I'm glad to have ditched the trackball. As nice as the N1 looks I feel like the Droid was right for me. Though to be honest, instead of a grimy trackball I now have a smudge covered screen. Its hard to keep these things pristine.

Patrick says:

Glad to see the N1 going to most/all networks. Should see a definite increase in sales. I would assume by the end of summer to see a huge hit to iphail sales. I for one am gonna dump my droid once the N1 gets it's next os update. The fact that it took Motorola 3mos (after Google gave i to them) to put out the less than stock 2.1 os bothers me.

JoshS says:

Does it still have that annoying multitouch issue?

I posted a way to stress-test the data connection on the cyanogenmod forum here:

http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?/topic/368-possible-to-flash-back...

That'll tell us whether the 3G problems have been fixed.

alphatectz says:

This is sweet news for us AT&T folks that have been Holding off on buying the unlocked tmo version of the nexus one. I am currently using a blackberry 9700 and an iPhone 3gs. My only concern is if I should wait for the HTC DESIRE to come out for AT&T Or shall I just buy the N1?
what do you guys/gals think I should do?
Wait or just get both?
Btw I know the desire will hve sense ui and the N1 doesn't. But I'm not sure if AT&T will cripple the desire like the way they did with the (POS) backflip....

dm33 says:

Hows 3G reception compared to the iPhone on AT&T and the Nexus One on T-Mobile?

I just realized today that T-Mobile doesn't give corporate discounts on "even more plus" plans, makes their more expensive "even more" plans the same price with 14% AAA discount.

Hope Verizon will subsidize the phone. No incentive to pay full price for a phone stuck to one carrier with no monthly discount.

alphatectz says:

Btw I'm well aware that the htc desire has a optical trackpad (which I think is sweet) and the n1 has a trackball (which I hate) but I heard that there really is no need to the trackball the n1 is fully touch so why would they put such a hideous thing like a trackball on it. (yes I know it's for led notification and all but why not just make a led light indicator?). Again with the track ball does it have any other use instead of a led notification... Can someone please tell me is there really a use for it???

Also is there a way to just cover the trackball up. For example just putting a new housing on the front of the n1? (let's say instead of having the slot for a trackball the new housing covers that up and then WHAM no trackball. Isthis posible?)

Sorry for all the questions. I'm new to android so I want to make sure that I make the right choice of device before I drop my blackberry and iPhone :D.

I confirm that Fandango is not available on my ATT Nexus One, but it is on my VZW Droid. Even using the barcode scanner to scan the app from the barcode on Fandango fails saying link not found.

Is AT&T locking down the marketplace for their android phones? Is AT&T run by the Chinese (LOL)?

frankie says:

I have both the T-Mobile and At&t. There are some things I have noticed. One the T-Mobile build is slightly heavier and the front casing feels like metal where the AT&T version seems like plastic. Can someone confirm this or am I losing my mind? Also no USB tethering on AT&t model. WTF? When I tried to restore my backup from T-Mobile to AT&T version apps where missing. The droid store on AT&T is not giving me all the apps. I can find them on T-Mobile version but not AT&T. Can someone else chime in and let me know if I'm nuts here.

Captsoto says:

Your are not nuts. I to found this to be the case with a number of my paid apps not available. I bought touchdown and while I can download the program, I cannot get the key that I paid for. I see a lot of lite apps but the paid versions are just not in the store. I have a ticket open with Google so we will see how that plays out. Other then that I love the phone,

@ai4281 says:

Hmm. I didn't know AT&T was so slow.

I'm on Telus HSPA and I reliably get about 4000kbps (or 4Mbps) every time I do a speed test. I hope AT&T upgrades their network soon!

does anyone know if the 3G issues with the N1 for the T-Mobile network have been fully resolved? Because that is the only thing keeping me from buying it.

N1NJA says:

There is nothing wrong with the buttons on the T-mobile version. They are just a bit different and take a few days to get used to.

Digger says:

How are the capacitive touch buttons? I remember the T-Mo ones had to be touched a little high in order to function, is that still the case? I'm contemplating selling my iPhone 3GS for this device this week. I need a lot of answers and reasons lol.
