TCL Communication's smartphone division Alcatel has launched its latest smartphone, the Idol X+, in India today. Unveiled at CES earlier this year, the Idol X+ will be available exclusively on Flipkart, with orders commencing from June 3.
The dual-SIM Idol X+ sports a 5-inch full-HD IPS display backed by Gorilla Glass 2, 2 GB RAM, a MediaTek MT6592 SoC that features eight Cortex Cortex A7 cores clocked at 2 GHz, 13.1 MP rear camera, 2 MP front shooter, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, HSDPA (42 Mbit/sec) connectivity and a 2500 mAh battery. With a thickness of 7.9 mm and overall weight of 130 g, the Idol X+ is quite sleek.
With a price tag of Rs. 16,999 ($285), the Idol X+ is targeted at the mid-range market and goes head to head with the likes of HTC's Desire 816, which is priced slightly higher at Rs. 23,029. Alcatel is sweetening the deal by bundling in a Boomband activity tracker and JBL in-ear headphones.
The Idol X+ does seem to offer a lot for the asking price, but one major issue with the device is that is comes with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, with no mention of a future KitKat update. Considering that most Android smartphones launching in India feature the latest version of Android out of the box, Alcatel has to rectify the issue before long.
As for availability, Alcatel is following in Motorola's footsteps, and is going to launch the device exclusively on Flipkart. However, it will be hard put to match the sales of the Moto E, which exceed 50,000 in less than 14 days, a major feat considering that traditional brick-and-mortar stores sales exceed e-commerce sales by a huge margin.
