What function does the circular silver button on the right side of the phone perform?

I have stayed with my amazing Samsung Galaxy Nexus waiting for the next great Nexus which the 4 is not. But this Sony looks pretty amazing both design & specs!

I have the nexus 4 and it actually is a great phone and one of the best phones out in my opinion. The only real downside is no 4g I think 16gb is enough storage to have on a phone in my opinion. I would consider the nexus 4 if I were you

Sony seems to be hedging it's smartphone future on the Z which is odd considering the ZL has similar hardware & operating system.
I personally prefer the ZL because of the external camera button, the infrared port & it's smaller ergonomic proportions(same 5" screen).
The Z has already sold out in countries where it was recently released. This leads me to believe that Sony in it's lack of wisdom has seriously misjudged the market and is not producing enough of either model. The ZL isn't being released in Australia & the UK, so I have to buy on-line from Hong Kong which has the same 4g bandwidth as Auss.
The Galaxy 4 is due for release in a couple of months. Sony produce such great products but they really have shot themselves in the fot with these two.
