After a five-month long wait, Samsung phone and tablet owners in Canada can finally look forward to an update to the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. The manufacturer has today announced that nine devices, including members of the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab families, as well as the Galaxy Note, will be getting ICS from today, "on select devices in Canada."

There's no information on exactly which devices will be first, and as is always the case, when you get your update will probably be heavily dependent on your carrier of choice. Regardless, the fact that these updates seem to have been rubber-stamped by Samsung is a good indication. Here's the manufacturer's list of ICS-upgradable devices --

  • GALAXY S II
  • GALAXY S II LTE
  • GALAXY S II LTE HD
  • GALAXY S II X
  • GALAXY Note
  • GALAXY Tab 7.0
  • GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus
  • GALAXY Tab 8.9
  • GALAXY Tab 10.1

We'll be keeping an eye on our Samsung devices in the days ahead, as many of these haven't yet received Android 4.0 outside of Canada. We'll update you soon as there's any word on when exactly ICS is rolling out. In the meantime there's more specifics in Samsung Canada's press release, which you'll find after the break.

The question is when. We have known for a while that those devices are getting updates.

Hell Samsung said that the galaxy tab 10.1 was going to get an update 1Q. We are nearing the end of Q2. where is the updated to ICS.

SPRTUSR says:

"Arriving from today..." That's not vague or anything.

EVO28312 says:

Wtf!?! How is Samsung updating to ics before HTC is?? Still waiting on my EVO!!! I guess its pretty safe to say not before EVO LTE goes on sale

Mr.Froyo says:

If you're talking about the OG EVO You'll be lucky if it even gets an update.

bllackkman says:

Its really getting bad with the developers, I understand that we should be paying them for their services and I am grateful for everything they have done but They are concentrating on the latest and greatest!!! Unless you have money to burn nobody has the money to buy a phone every year or these days every 3 months. The Android OS is updating so fast its starting to effect the quality of the Roms out right now they really need to start pushing a new OS every other year.

XavierMatt says:

So happy I have a galaxy Nexus and dont have to worry about this. But my mother will have a GS2 so awesome for her.

arcadelion says:

I complete agree. I know the Nexus will get the next OS (Jelly Bean?), but I doubt these phones will. Hell, my old Galaxy S Vibrant didn't even get Gingerbread!

Morjesta says:

y AT&T, apa?

TyBec says:

I hope the original galaxy tab 7 is not a mistake being on that list. Samsung better not get my hopes up again.

j510 says:

i know right

Elrohir says:

I hope the update is for the International Galaxy Note as well and not just the AT&T version.

malockin says:

un-freakin-believable!
every tablet but the 7.7!!

JStiner says:

Don't worry to Wifi only Gal Tab won't be getting it either.

TyBec says:

I don't remember the 7.7 being available in Canada on a carrier... I could be wrong though.

malockin says:

ouch!

I saw only "Samsung", "ICS" and "Update"... and my brain kind of shut down after that!

so there's still hope! :-)

thanks for pointing that out

j510 says:

This was directly from samsung canada. So the 7.7 might not be on the list permanently.

Samsung mobile should change its name to Galaxy.

sirheck says:

America is usually pretty good about the most up to date electronics.
But not when it comes to mobile phone updates.

sharmasree says:

Ther is no ics update at all for note yet

swagnificent says:

So does this mean ICS is coming to the U.S. also? Or is this strictly for devices in Canada?

I can't wait to see that on my gs2x! I hope Telus won't the whole month to give it to use, the consumers! I can't wait to have dates and stuff!

evilsanta2 says:

Update for Bell Galaxy S2 is now live... Just upgraded a couple hours ago!

swagnificent says:

Is this for Canada only, or is for the U.S. as well?
