Sprint HTC Evo 4G

The Evo 4G. Even the name of the newest Android smartphone from Sprint and HTC sounds like a phone you should pay attention to. And it is. And it's finally available today, for $199 after contract and rebate. From the announcement at CTIA in Las Vegas in March to the launch event in New York in May to this week's release, we've had you covered every step of the way.

In a nutshell: The screen is massive. Larger than anything you've used. The phone is fast and can run any of the tens of thousands of apps in the Android Market. It has an excellent camera and even does video chatting. If you have questions about the Evo 4G, we have answers here.

9 hours 15 minutes til my appointment at Best Buy!

1 hour 6 min until my Radioshack appointment! headed out the door now!

mines is @ 8:45am so i have 1hr left...GOOD BYE PRE

I have to wait a week but all good. I can read alllll the user reviews and maybe they'll drop Froyo by then! Wishful. I'm one of the many pre owners coming to Android. Being a homebrewer/patcher has really helped me on the hack side. Of course big ups to the devs who make it so easy these days!! Much respect guys and gals.

Just got my EVO and it is Great and just dumped my PRE for this and GOOD BYE PRE CENTRAL and HELLO ANDROID CENTRAL!!!

Got it Got it Got it! Now everyone can be super annoyed with me all day!

waiting for a break at work to go...also, so long Pre!

Everybody I know that has Pres are saying good bye to them.. I guess Palm numbers are going to drop like flies....I LOVE MY NEW EVO!!

I need to wait a week due to being out of the country, but I'm looking forward to ditching my Nokia E71/AT&T for the Evo.

Good Bye Blackberry helloooo EVO!!!!

too bad i have to wait two months for my upgrade, but its cool...my hero been holding up pretty good

Got mine at 8am this morning. This thing smokes!

Got mine @ 8am. They (BB) had to open the doos for me and my son. the lights were still off. The EVO was in a gift bag and they put on the Invisi Shield. It was a good morning

Just picked up my evo from RadioShack, but I am kind of annoyed of how I got my phone though. Yes I pre-ordered it so it was waiting for me wrapped with some papers and my name on it and so I get the phone and then the Radioshack associate wanted to make sure everything worked with the network setup so she took my phone out the box, put my sim and battery in powered it up, i bought a screen protector since they were out of everything else and SHE put the screen protector on too. I mean I understand its kind of there job and she was being helpful but sheesh back the hell up. I could of did all that no prob, but its cool. main thing is I got my htc EVO XD

Waaaah!

I have to wait a full month before I can upgrade under my current Sprint contract (something like July 10th). Oh well. At any rate, I did manage to sneak a visit to the local RadioShack to get a few glorious hands-on minutes with a functioning model of the EVO. This phone is a serious bad-a$$. You want to talk beautiful crisp 4.3" screen, responsive touchscreen and capacitive buttons along with a lightning fast processor; yep, that's the EVO 4G from HTC and only available on Sprint's NOW Network.

Oh and another thing. RadioShack... love them. What's better than an INSTANT DISCOUNT? Seriously, Mail-In Rebates are so 1999. LOL. And, how much do we love a TRADE-IN allowance on your old phone. My very problematic BlackBerry Tour 9630 is worth $55. Very cool.

I got my evo after work and this phone is the best phone sprint have love u blackberry tour but bye bye evo 4g all the way this phone is great still playing with it dont think will sleep tonight

Picked up the EVO Friday morning. To be honest, I have mixed feelings. It will take some time before I am comfortable with Android. It is quit smoking weekend, maybe getting comfortable with Android and the EVO will keep me occupied and help to get past the cravings and on to a healthier life style.

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo envious!

While everybody is wildly rejoicing about the EVO here is a one person experience with this handset:

It looks like HTC has gotten fat and sloppy with its smart phones offerings

I read and researched all the reviews before the phone came out and they were all great reviews. I visited many of the familiar tech blogs sites such as engadget.com, gizmodo.com, etc. and they all gave the phone more or less stellar reviews. Needless to say, I rushed out and got this phone from RadioSchack. The first thing I noticed was a nagging high pitched static sound on recorded videos and anything recorded with the mike. The videos themselves were highly compressed which made it impossible to watch them on a high def monitor through an HDMI cable. What 720p? I took this phone (first batch, series 0002 ) back to RadioShack and got a new one from the new 003 batch. This one had a different color processing chip that performed worse than the one in the 0002 series. Guess what, the same problems with the sound, and casing resonance, and video. I took it back, got my money back and closed my Sprint account. They should deliver what they promise.

I got to thinking, how can a phone maker design and make such a complex communication/entertainment device and do such a poor engineering job where it really counts-the sound. I mean that should be the most important element of any kind of telephone. In the EVO’s case there is some bad engineering going on. For example, the speaker membrane seems to be made from inferior material and is exposed and poorly secured to the phone body. This contributes to the nagging high pitched static sound that I experienced on these two HTC EVO’s. The second bad design element is that the back cover is made of thin hollow plastic which causes the distortion coming out of the speaker to resonate and thus become more noticeable. The sound is distorted, tinny and not clear. If you add to this all the problems that this phone has been having with the SD card, the battery and the 30fps video cap, you might have to consider that this phone is indeed a highly flawed phone as has been claimed by someone out there. Of course, I also fell for the front camera with the mirrored output image, the unusable Qik utility, the YouTube utility that does not work on 3G, and the nonexistent 4G signal, but there is nothing like having a phone that you can use to make clear, undistorted phone calls. It is such a satisfying feeling to be able to make clear telephone calls. In my experience, the EVO is not made for this. For those of you who must have your EVO no matter what or that have not noticed any of these defects yet, I say to you good luck with your EVO my friend.
Be careful when you read the crap put out by those overly excited and overly enthused tech bloggers out there in blog land. When they review tech equipment is as if they are getting a brand new toy for the first time so they forget to do any kind of in-depth testing of the devices that they review. This is especially true when they review the new so called smart phones. So, with a phone that has as many problems as features- and more appearing everyday-as the EVO I say be ready for disappointments.

Hey can I video cam chat with a friend he has the iphone 4 and I have the HTC Evo? This should be possible but i am not sure how to do it?

What is the best settings to use with the ultimate juice app. For the HTC evo 4g to save the most battery
