Phil Nickinson News Friday, 19 March 2010

And so, we wait. But all hope is not lost, as Verizon told Phone Scoop yesterday that the update isn't delayed and is rolling out as planned, with the small, initial batch pushed out.

"The Android 2.1 upgrade for the Droid by Motorola was deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users as scheduled. It is expected the broader phased rollout to all Droid by Motorola users will take place, but not just yet. No date scheduled yet."

That definitely

Russian Motorola Milestone's keyboard makes the Droid's look usable

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 17 March 2010

Russian is a hard language to learn. I know -- I took years of it and can still order the vodka but keep forgetting how to ask for the loo. Anyhoo, above is the Russian version of the Motorola Milestone. Now the Milestone (aka Droid in the U.S.) doesn't exactly have the world's best keyboard to begin...

Phil Nickinson News Tuesday, 16 March 2010

Here's another one of those charts that shows (and when we say "shows," we mean estimates) just how few units of the Nexus One Google has sold in comparison to the Motorola Droid and Apple's iPhone over the first 74 days that each was available.

And here's the sentence

Motorola Backflip hands-on video

Phil Nickinson News, Featured Monday, 15 March 2010

Ah, the Motorola Backflip. An odd little phone with a keyboard that flips up under the screen, and a trackpad on the back. Strange, to say the least. But, oddly enough, it works. At least until you turn the thing on.

While some have lamented AT&T's locking-down of the device -- namely in not allowing the sideloading of apps switching to Yahoo instead of Google for...

On Motorola's official forums, it's much of the same. Though forum manager...

Motorola releases source code for Backflip

Phil Nickinson News Friday, 12 March 2010

If you're the type of person who's into Android source code -- and let's face it, you probably are -- then you should know that Motorola's had the source for the Backflip available for a week now. Now you can play amateur Android chef and cook up your own locked-down, drive-a...

Motorola i1 has a 5 megapixel camera, Opera Mini as default browser?

Casey Chan News Friday, 12 March 2010

The Motorola i1, formerly the Motorola Opus One, has just gotten a wee bit more interesting. It's now supposed to pack a 5 megapixel camera, which can be termed as par for the course, and come with Opera Mini as the default browser, which is a little stunning. We guess this is Motorola stepping a bit outside of the typical Android getup and focusing more on their Motoblur...

Motorola putting Bing on some Chinese Android phones in lieu of Google

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 11 March 2010

This is another one of those deals that's likely to raise a few eyebrows, or at least produce some unwarranted exclamation points. The long and short of it is that Microsoft and Motorola have come to a deal that will make Bing the default search engine on Android devices released in China in the first quarter.

Here's another way to write that headline: "Manufacturer does what it wants with its own phones."

While it's the first time we can think of Bing...

Inventor of the cell phone gave up his iPhone for a Motorola Droid [update]

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 11 March 2010

Android sees huge growth through Jan. (what phone could have caused that?)

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 10 March 2010

Take a look at the latest smartphone usage numbers from Comscore, and you're likely to do a double-take -- Android increased by 4.3 percentage points from November '09 through January 2010 over the three previous months, giving it a 7.1 percent share. There's no doubt that Android's popularity continues to grow. But those numbers likely can (and should) be attributed to the introduction of just one phone: The

How to: Get at the Motorola Devour's battery and microSD card

Phil Nickinson News Tuesday, 09 March 2010

We're well into our review of the Motorola Devour (check out our initial hands-on), but we wanted to take a station break to mention how to get at the battery and microSD card. Because the Devour is one of those newfangled "unibody" devices -- as in cast from a single piece...

AT&T locks down its first Android phone, the Backflip [and so what?]

Phil Nickinson News Monday, 08 March 2010

As Android reviewers and the hacking faithful are finding out this week, the Motorola Backflip on AT&T has been locked down a bit. Namely, you can't load apps from outside of the Android market. It's not just that the option is turned off, as it is by default on most (if not all) Android phones. It's that the option isn't even there on the backflip. [via

For those not familiar with Motoblur, it's Motorola bringing all your social Web sites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and the like straight to your home...

Leaked Droid 2.1 update shows live wallpapers

Phil Nickinson News Monday, 08 March 2010

We've had discussion of the ESE53 build of the Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid (yeah, say all that 10 times fast) for a number of days, but now there's video to go along with all that talk. And the buzz is that live wallpapers are included and run just fine. There are only three homescreens, though that's easily fixed, isn't it. Peep the whole video after the break. [

Phil Nickinson News, Featured Monday, 15 March 2010

The Motorola Devour (running Android 1.6 with Motoblur on Verizon) made its here this morning, and we've had a couple minutes to give it the what-for. Despite playing second fiddle to the Motorola Droid at least as far as specs are concerned -- smaller screen, less powerful processor, etc. -- it's a very well-crafted smartphone.

The Devour has a...

AT&T ditches Google Search for Yahoo on the Motorola Backflip

Jared DiPane News Wednesday, 03 March 2010

When you think of Android, you think Google -- powered by Google, Google Search Bar, Google Apps, Google Sync, etc.

But we also all know how AT&T likes to have exclusives, and, shall we say, "tweak" its devices. And they're at it again with the Motorola Backflip, which has given Yahoo search default function of this device. The search bar, home page and more are Yahoo instead of Google.

AT&T firmly believes Yahoo is the...

Phil Nickinson News Monday, 01 March 2010

If that borked update for the Motorola Cliq has kept you up nights, there's some relief in sight. The guys and gals at These Are The Droids got Moto to acknowledge there's been an issue, and a workaround has been identified. Said Moto:

Last week, the CLIQ 1.3.18 over-the-air software update began rolling out to consumers. While the vast majority of updates were successful, a very small number of consumers reported a...

HTC's new Sense user interface ported to the Motorola Droid

Phil Nickinson News Sunday, 28 February 2010

It's hardly shocking, but HTC's new Sense user interface (read our review here) has been ported onto the Motorola Droid. It's still a little buggy, but damned if its not the same ROM (more or less) that was ripped off the HTC Desire and thrust...

The Motorola Backflip it ain't ...

Jared DiPane News Thursday, 25 February 2010

Another version of the Motorola Backflip? Mmmm, not so much. This "MOTOROIA" device, it is completely lacking in the camera department, with an antiquated VGA camera, and even though they snuck in the hint of an Android software, but don't be fooled, it's not running it. Appearance-wise, the device looks pretty well replicated, but really of all the devices to clone, why this one?

AC @ MWC: Video of the Motorola Motoroi (XT720), Koreas first Android 2.0

Phil Nickinson News Monday, 15 February 2010

The Motorola Motoroi's been intriguing ever since it first leaked out of the depths of wherever such leaks come from. But in getting your hands (and watching the hands of a lovely Motorola representative) on the device, you really get a sense that despite a few obvious cues taken from the Motorola Droid, the Motoroi really isn't a keyboardless Droid.

For one, it lacks the hard lines of the Droid. You're not going to be...
