Motorola Backflip gets rooted [FWIW]

Jerry Hildenbrand News Friday, 27 August 2010

The Motorola Backflip is the latest phone to get rooted, and it's using the same exploit as was used on the Droid 2 and the Evo 4G. This makes things really interesting, as any root method that works across different models and...

Devour won't be getting Android 2.1; Motorola updates other time lines

Phil Nickinson News Sunday, 22 August 2010

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as the Motorola Devour already is listed as end-of-life, but now it officially won't be getting an upgrade to Android 2.1. In happier news, the Backflip is slated for an update in the third quarter, and the Cliq and Cliq XT should see their updates in late Q3/early Q4.

There are a slew of...

Sideload Android apps all you want with the Sideload Wonder Machine

Phil Nickinson Applications, News, How To Thursday, 19 August 2010

When it comes to installing Android applications, there are two ways of going about it. The most popular, of course, is directly through the Android Market. And that's how most of us do it. But from time to time we need to be able to sideload apps. Maybe you purchased it directly from a developer or some other perfectly legitimate method.

Or maybe

Motorola Backflip gets an update -- bugfixes, not Android 2.X

Motorola adds a bunch of phones to its Android 2.1 update list

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 17 June 2010

Motorola just added a slew of new non-U.S. phones to its Android 2.1 update list (see the previous update), including a bunch of Backflips and Quenches. Doesn't really give us a better idea of when the new software will actually be available, but it's good to see Moto at least...

Samsung i897 looks like the Galaxy S destined for AT&T

Dallin Hampton News Monday, 31 May 2010

The Samsung i897 -- better known to you as the Samsung Galaxy S -- looks like it's well on its way to AT&T, thanks to a recent leak. Some of the hardware specs confirmed by the source is that the phone will sport a 5-megapixel camera, a 4-inch AMOLED screen and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The speed of the processor isn’t yet confirmed, but, with the similarities between this phone and the

AT&T releases myWireless Mobile app for Android

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 19 May 2010

In a move that probably should have happened a while ago, AT&T just released their myWireless Mobile for Android devices (which is currently only the Motorola Backflip). The AT&T myWireless Mobile app allows users to keep track of their AT&T...

The Motorola Backflip has been rooted! (for what it's worth)

Jared DiPane News Monday, 03 May 2010

Are you one of the (at least several) Motorola Backflip owners  jealous with all of the rooting and ROM'ing posts that fill our forums for many other devices, and not yours? Well, for those that have been patient, and stuck with the Backflip, even after it was stamped as crippled (when it's really not), your patience has...

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 28 April 2010

If you're in Canada and have a hankering for some twisted, flippy Android keyboard action, know that the Motorola Backflip is now available on Telus. It runs a very respectable $399 off-contract and goes as low as $249 with the Canadian-standard three-year deal. [Telus] Thanks, Jon!

Where Motorola stands on Android 2.1 updates

Phil Nickinson News Tuesday, 13 April 2010

Loyal reader Tom Cochrane reminded us on Twitter that Motorola has a status board for its Android 2.1 roll-out. And above is where we stand as of today. If you're rocking the Milestone, updates are either in progress or should be coming in the few months or so. Same goes in the U.S. for the Backflip, Cliq and Cliq XT. Hang in there, folks. [

We call them crippled because they are!

Keith Newman Editorial Tuesday, 30 March 2010

In response to our fearless leader's momentary lapse of reason regarding the AT&T Backflip and its inability to load unsigned apps: Main Entry: 3cripple Function: transitive verb Inflected Form(s): crip·pled; crip·...

Stop calling phones crippled just because they don't do what you want

Phil Nickinson Editorial Thursday, 25 March 2010

Hey, you. Over there banging away on your laptop in outrage. Need to let you in on a little secret. The Dell Aero isn't crippled. Neither is the Motorola Backflip. And you need to stop saying they are.

No, we don't agree with AT&T's decision to not allow unsigned apps on the Backflip and,

AT&T commercials show off Backflip, poke fun at Verizon yet again

Casey Chan News Friday, 19 March 2010

AT&T just released a few commercials showcasing the Motorola Backflip and didn't mention Android once. Instead, they focus on taking another stab at Verizon, boasting that the AT&T network can talk and surf the web at the same time while the Verizon network can't. It's interesting how AT&T is approaching their Android devices,

Motorola Backflip hands-on video

Phil Nickinson News, Featured Monday, 15 March 2010

Ah, the Motorola Backflip. An odd little phone with a keyboard that flips up under the screen, and a trackpad on the back. Strange, to say the least. But, oddly enough, it works. At least until you turn the thing on.

While some have lamented AT&T's locking-down of the device -- namely in not allowing the sideloading of apps switching to Yahoo instead of Google for...

Motorola releases source code for Backflip

Phil Nickinson News Friday, 12 March 2010

If you're the type of person who's into Android source code -- and let's face it, you probably are -- then you should know that Motorola's had the source for the Backflip available for a week now. Now you can play amateur Android chef and cook up your own locked-down, drive-a...

AT&T locks down its first Android phone, the Backflip [and so what?]

Phil Nickinson News Monday, 08 March 2010

As Android reviewers and the hacking faithful are finding out this week, the Motorola Backflip on AT&T has been locked down a bit. Namely, you can't load apps from outside of the Android market. It's not just that the option is turned off, as it is by default on most (if not all) Android phones. It's that the option isn't even there on the backflip. [via

Motorola Backflip -- AT&T's first Android phone -- now available for $99

Phil Nickinson News Sunday, 07 March 2010

Motoblur invades Canada on the Dext, Quench and Backflip

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 03 March 2010

If you're in Canada and have had a serious hankering for Motoblur (and it's OK to admit it if you have), fret not, as a trio of Motorola phones are bringing some serious social networking integration your way.

First there's the Quench, which we...

AT&T ditches Google Search for Yahoo on the Motorola Backflip

Jared DiPane News Wednesday, 03 March 2010

When you think of Android, you think Google -- powered by Google, Google Search Bar, Google Apps, Google Sync, etc.

But we also all know how AT&T likes to have exclusives, and, shall we say, "tweak" its devices. And they're at it again with the Motorola Backflip, which has given Yahoo search default function of this device. The search bar, home page and more are Yahoo instead of Google.

AT&T firmly believes Yahoo is the...

The Motorola Backflip it ain't ...

Jared DiPane News Thursday, 25 February 2010

Another version of the Motorola Backflip? Mmmm, not so much. This "MOTOROIA" device, it is completely lacking in the camera department, with an antiquated VGA camera, and even though they snuck in the hint of an Android software, but don't be fooled, it's not running it. Appearance-wise, the device looks pretty well replicated, but really of all the devices to clone, why this one?

Motorola Backflip First Android Phone on AT&T, Available for $100 on March 7th

Casey Chan News Thursday, 18 February 2010

AT&T just announced what we already expected, that the Motorola Backflip will become the first Android device on the AT&T network. The Backflip will be available in AT&T stores and online beginning March 7th for $99.99 after $100 mail-in-rebate. Great news all around!

It's interesting that AT&T chose an oddball device (we like the Backflip but it's still an oddball) to be the...

Another Moto Zeppelin appears in Brazil

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 03 February 2010

What's this? Another Motorola Zeppelin? That's apparently the case, according to Gizmodo Brazil. They scored what they says is basically a Moto Backflip (see our hands-on) sans keyboard (which is what makes it a "backflip," but whatever).

This guy is said to be running Android 1.5 with MotoBLUR. Other than that...

Motorola Backflip now available - in China

Phil Nickinson News Sunday, 31 January 2010

If you're just dying to get your hands on the Motorola Backflip (speaking of hands-ons, check out ours with the phone), tickets to China are running about $800 right now. 'Cause that's where you're going to have to go to pick up what's being billed as the ME600 on Motorola China's Web site....

Moto Backflip appears in video promo

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 14 January 2010

Speaking of the Motorola Backflip, it's now doing its whole contortion thing in an official video promo. Check it out after the break. (Warning: If you're the sort of person who has trouble thinking in three dimensions, gets sick in the backseat of a car or freaked out at the 3D showing of "Avatar," well, take it easy.) [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Motorola Backflip rumored for March launch

Phil Nickinson News Friday, 15 January 2010

Latest rumored AT&T launch date for the the Motorola Backflip: March 7, for $324. That comes from an unidentified source talking to Phandroid. Why March 7? Why not. And if the price point is correct, that could bring the Backflip down to about $100-$150 after contract...

Wrapping up CES 2010

Phil Nickinson Featured Monday, 11 January 2010

That's it, folks. Stick a fork in us. We're done. The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is over, we've fled Sin City and are giving our weary feet a rest. But what a show it was.

The Google Nexus One was unveiled before the show, but it was on hand at an event Wednesday night, as were the Motorola Backflip and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. E-readers were abundant. And we took a ride with the...

AT&T serious about Motorola Backflip -- as in 400,000 serious

Phil Nickinson News Friday, 08 January 2010

OK, so AT&T hasn't officially said it's bringing on the Motorola Backflip (see our hands-on here) as its first Android device, but ... well, it's bringing on the Motorola Backflip as its first Android device. Remember that it's "A Motorola...

Hands-on with the Motorola Backflip

Phil Nickinson News Thursday, 14 January 2010

Let's be perfectly clear here: When I first saw the leaked images of the Motorola Backflip, I didn't know what to make of it and wrote it off as gimmicky. OK, a keyboard that contorts and kind of wraps itself around a phone is gimmicky. But once you see it in action -- along with Android 2.1 and Motoblur --  it works, and it's...

Motorola Backflip Is Official, Probably Headed to AT&T

Casey Chan News Wednesday, 06 January 2010

Motorola just announced the Motorola Backflip at their CES press conference. We've seen this quirky device before, remember, this isn't a slider-type device but rather the keyboard is on the outside and it flips backwards (?) when necessary--hence, the name. It comes with your usual slew of 3G, Wi-Fi, and 5-megapixel camera. Also of note, it's going to be running Motoblur.

Motorola Backflip/Enzo appears destined for AT&T with Motoblur

Phil Nickinson News Wednesday, 16 December 2009

Doubtless we'll be seeing a lot of punny headlines over the Motorola Backflip (also rumored to be called the Enzo), but none from us. Phandroid got tipped to a relatively run-of-the-mill device. But before we worry about specs, let's worry about carriers. This thing appears destined for AT&T, sporting AT&T-branded apps and 3G bands and an AT&T...
