Nexus update

KOT49H brings Android 4.4.2 mere days after 4.4.1 hit

Yet another small OTA update is headed to your Nexus 5, this time it's Android 4.4.2. The unofficial change log reads the same as the last one, which was Android 4.4.1 and lasted a whopping four days. According to the official Sprint forums, the original 4.4.1 had some issues, and was pulled and today's update was issued instead.

If you side loaded the last update (KOT49E) there is a small patch ready for you. You can side load it via the download link here using the same methods. We'll add more as they become available.

If you didn't fool with any side loading or didn't get the 4.4.1 OTA, you have a 54MB OTA coming that takes you from 4.4 to 4.4.2. We're looking for more download links as I type this out.

Confused yet? Don't be. The forums are filled with folks discussing and ready to help.

Thanks everyone who sent this in!

Nexus OTA updates to Android 4.4.2 are pushing out now

hey y'all, turn off phone, take out sim card, turn on phone... voila update is available... have a merry xmas everyone

Same here. I had been checking for the update since Friday, no dice. Got the 4.4.2 update today during my lunch break.

I've been checking since friday as well but still nothing... so annoying. Also tried to do this and its not working on my phone. :(

It will notify you of an update over GSM but won't download it unless you are connected to wifi. There is a time period on this, my phone says 'until 13/12/2013' which I guess means I can download via GSM after that?

Looks like it's the Nexus 7 LTE. I tried it on my WIFI version and get a fingerprint mismatch.

edit: ah. I was on 4.4.1 already. That explains the mismatch error.

Note: I just got the OTA anyway. Seems like they're pushing it out quickly.

Got it for my N7 2013 but nothing for my N5 yet. Didn't side load anything.

Posted via Android Central App

Mine did too. The improvement in the camera is spectacular! Zippy accurate autofocus, vibrant colors, no more blurry, dark shots.

N5 and N7 within a few minutes of each other. I think Google sent it out to everyone at once... Either that or now would be a good time to buy a lottery ticket!

Posted via Android Central App

Was only 1.8Mb for my N4 from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2. They may well have released the KOT49H from KOT49E update to a wider than usual audience.

Just moments after reading this I checked my system update and "poof" it was there... I'm now on 4.4.2 after just yesterday sideloading 4.4.1

got this update fast on both my Nexus devices :)
try Force stopping and clear Data : Gooogle Service Framework.
help me with my Nexus 7

I tried for the OTA three times:

1) Routine check for update... nothing
2) Restarted the phone... nothing
3) Cleared data for Google services Framework, then restarted phone... bam, update available.

Coincidence?

REALLY?? Wow I was clueless because I did this for pretty much every ota I ever got... and it always worked on both my N4 and N7 2012 without problems... Should I really stop?

I got 4.4.1 -and it bricked my Nexus 4.

Google sent me a replacement (refurbished) because I was still under warranty. So even though I was without a phone for a week, my new one is dent and scratch-free!!!

Now I'm waiting for 4.4.2.

haha.. Wondering the same thing.. What are you doing Google!? Thankfully I did not bother updating my 4 Rooted Nexus devices to 4.4.1 otherwise I wouldn't be to happy having to do 4.4.2

Sadly, I spent some time yesterday updating to 4.4.1 and enabling LTE on my N4, so now the OTA throws up errors.

I guess I'll be flashing stock again tonight and upgrading unless the factory image hits sooner...

Me too. Luckily it is only a few commands to flash the stock radio, update, then flash the LTE radio. Only take a couple minutes not including the time waiting for it to update.

Par for the course on the beta train that are Google updates. ;) /had to be that guy...

Not suprised about the change logs still the same; GMail, Maps and Youtube have done the same thing for a while now. :( It's as if they're afraid to indicate the frequency of the updates to fix bugs in previous updates. But if I've learned anything since using Android, it's Google's M.O.

Never see update 4.4.1 but just get update 4.4.2 automatically and update was about 52mb and it,s working only don't know the difference.
From The Netherlands...device Nexus 10 !

I got the 4.4.2 today, never got the 4,4.1.. Still haven't notice much of a difference....

When the hell is goog gonna release the fix for KitKat's monstrous performance issues on the Nexus 7 (2012)? The lag and downright hanging up is killing my experience with this device. And before you ask, yes, I cleared the system cache, and when that didn't fix it, I did a factory reset. It's only marginally better. Seriously regretting the "upgrade".

Posted via Android Central App

My experience was exactly the opposite. I don't think the OS version has anything to do with it. I worked hard to eliminate the lag in 4.3, cleared half the N7's storage and ran ForeverGone over and over, and when I installed the 4.4 OTA performance went right back in the toilet. Ran LagFix and everything was minty fresh again. Can't wait to see what happens with 4.4.2.

Well, I guess I have a little crow to eat....

Finally "fixed" my 4.4 KitKat performance issues. Turns out that they weren't directly caused by KitKat at all, but rather by my trusty old copy of GSam Battery Monitor Pro. GSam is not 4.4 compatible as Android doesn't make the necessary hooks (APIs, data files, memory, whatever) available to the app anymore with KitKat.

I should have picked up on this issue sooner, since I did notice GSam saying that it was calculating the remaining time and never giving a result. Finally I did a little digging and found some notes about the issue. I've uninstalled GSam, rebooted, and so far, so good.

Would still like to see the update on my Nexus 7 (2012) 3G model soon...

Same here, my lag since 4.4, now on 4.4.2 is incredible. My device(not rooted)2012 8gb, is basically unusable. my lag on any given next operation can be from 5 seconds if i'm lucky to more likely 20 or 40 seconds up to 1 minute. I am really restraining myself from just taking a video of me smashing this POS with a hammer or such to vent my frustration! I think i am going to put it up on a shelf and check on it in a couple of months. Lucky i got ipads and window tablet, and laptop and pc's, they actually work. Come on Google! i thought you could do better :( ..ive reset, same, clear cache, same, junk. my advice is not to by nexus 7 or android, as much as i hate to say that, you get what you pay for, and at this point i paid for a device that doesn;t even work. Thanks alot Google! buy an ipad 32g, well worth it!

Just got this on my nexus 5 :)
Glad to just get the second, less buggy version
Obviously they found some bugs and released a new version.

I got the 4.4.2 update for my Nexus 4 this evening (2150 GMT). Update went smoothly but I can't see any changes from 4.4 but maybe I will over the next few days. Incidentally I never got 4.4.1

Can I take the OTA if I'm stock rooted? Every time I try to update it - it reboots into Recovery but it doesn't flash the update.

Just got the 4.4.2 OTA on my Nexus 7 (2013) rooted with 4.4.1 sideloaded, it automatically rebooted into TWRP, installed the update and it preserved root (I have SuperSU survival mode on, tho). Didn't know first of all that I could still get official OTAs while rooted, it surprised me and it surprised me again that it kept root. :)

@Cares, No you can't. Just download the file and flash it in twrp like you would a rom. As long as you are on the stock rom and haven't altered any system files or deodexed, it will work fine. I did it with 4.4.1 and again to 4.2.2.

You will have to reroot but that's easy.

I have a Nexus 5. I've checked for update but haven't got 4.4.1 or 4.4.2. I have a feeling that I might have to wait for days or even weeks....sad but true.

Me Too..My N5 is still on 4.4, I have checked system update, but it says your system is up to date.really don't know when i can expect an update to 4.4.2 . please can any one look into this and let me know that when i can expect an update for the same.

This paired with the fact that the 4.4 update on the nexus 7 was delayed do to bugs, pretty much shows that if Google isnt the pushing the update to me I shouldn't sideload anything lol.

After the update on my Nexus 10 it slowed to a crawl, did a reset and all well, now waiting for 4.4.2 on both my Nexus 10 and 5.

Camera app starts almost instantly now, considerably faster than the gain from 4.4.1. (Nexus 7 2013). Focus and shooting is also very fast now.

4.4.2 is on my Nexus 7 (2013) now for a few minutes. It seems a bit smoother but it's early. Only problem I've had with KitKat is app related ( Starbucks official app, Yahoo Sports Radio app to name 2 will not install within 4.3 or higher yet)

Nothing here either and while I do understand why some seem to get it quickly and other have to wait a while.

It would be nice if they (Google) were more communicative with us their customers .

LOL! I'll try not to. Waiting for this OTA is annoying, I should sideload, but what's the point now with 4.2.2 pushing to so many devices?

You'll get it soon. Basically everyone should get it very soon. They rolled out 4.4.1 in stages so they can fix any bugs that people experience, and now 4.4.2 should fix those bugs and they release it to everyone.

Posted via Android Central App

Still waiting on 4.4.1 (N4) but I guess I'll get 4.4.2 instead wonder why takes so long

Posted via Android Central App

How does Google decide what device gets an OTA update first? My 2012 nexus 7 WiFi just got 4.4.2 but my nexus 5 is still at 4.4 with no update being offered. Isn't the Nexus 5 supposed to be first?

Posted via Android Central App

It seems like Google teases us like they want us to side load updates because even devices like the Nexus 5 which are sold with the concept of "first to receive updates" often don't get them first. I'm not complaining I just hate waiting for updates when I have the newest nexus device.

Posted via Android Central App

are such updates meaningful for other devices, or is it just the driver of the nexus device that gets updated?

Have Nexus 4,5 & 7. No updates here. Just curious, I switched over to ART from dalvik. Its just cache so that shouldn't cause any problems....right?

Posted via Android Central App

Didn't cause any issues for me and from 4.4 to 4.4.2 I can see a dramatic speed improvement system wide.

Posted via Android Central App

Me neither, I don't get how Google pushes out updates. If I knew the logic I wouldn't be so irritated, but its just a guessing game and I hate checking for updates every hour and having nothing there.

Posted via Android Central App

It's essentially randomly distributed over a certain period of time. If you're impatient you can sideload, but Google does it this way so it doesn't affect too many people if there are any serious bugs that slipped through their testing.

Just be patient, your device will check for updates automatically and let you know when the update is ready to be installed. There's no need to keep hitting the "check for updates" button, I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually do anything if the device has checked for updates recently in any case, at least it doesn't seem to.

Posted via Android Central App

Yeah, I just got the update on my Nexus 5, but I'm still waiting for it to reach my 2013 Nexus 7.

Posted from my "Gift from God" Nexus 5

Me too... But I just woke up to this and only gave it a quick try. With the way it is going it should hit soon.

Or get side loaded depending on the coffee situation in the house...

----------------------------------------------------
So where is the competition for the Note 3? Oh right there isn't any...

With this update on my Nexus 5 I can't shut my phone off. When I power it down it automatically turns back on. Don't like this at all! 4.4.3 needs to come soon!

Posted via my Nexus 5

That sounds like it could be hardware. Were you stock when you updated?
I had a Note 2 and the USB port was going bad, it would not stay off either. You aren't having charging problems are you?

I tried turning mine off and it stayed off.

Posted via Android Central App

Yes I am stock, got it to stay off, took about 8 times of it rebooting and it stayed off. Not sure what happened but all is well again.

Posted via my Nexus 5

Not to be the ass of the group but why are people complaining about not receiving an update that's a few hours old? I know 4.4.1 has been out 4 whole days but if you have to have it the second it's released, just sideload it.

So what if you get it a week after it drops. It's better than getting it 6 months later or not at all like many carrier phones.

Sent from my Nexus 5

@benmadison

I agree with you, but I think it's because everyone says: "if you want quick updates, get a Nexus." Then you get a Nexus, and you expect updates as soon as they're announced. Now it's: "if you want updates, side load them!"

People are naturally impatient. I am waiting for the update also, but I'm not freaking out about it.

Posted via Android Central App

Straight to the 4.4.2 from 4.4 on my nexus 4. I actually thought I had been hacked or something. Immediately came here to see if 4.4.2 was a real thing lol.

Posted via Android Central App

Got 4.4.2 on my N10.
I do notice the difference in some of the icons, like the drop down settings and the camera icon is also different.

Sweetness.!!!

I saw this article checked myN7 2013 and now going from 4.4 right to 4.4.2 52.8 MB and taking for ever to download

What is this? All android instruments should have updates at the same time.... Regard of the country or career. Let's all be on equal platforms

Posted via Android Central App

I just side loaded the update. It's running smoothly on my phone. It just looks like they did a few minor tweaks.

Posted via Android Central App

Just got the OTA update a while ago. Didn't receive the 4.4.1 but I jumped from 4.4 to 4.4.2.

Posted via Android Central App

I love that picture of the nexus 5 & 7 together. I'm ordering my N5 soon so I will have the same combo. :)

Just curious.

Is no one gonna bash Google for the botched 4.4.1 update?

----------------------------------------------------
So where is the competition for the Note 3? Oh right there isn't any...

Haha, they will after this update. Right now everyone is excited they are getting an update

Posted via Android Central App

I guess we have to give them credit for correctly it quickly. Its not like everyone had 4.4.1 for days and then had to update again, most ppl completely skipped 4.4.1 so that likely why no ones complaining.

Posted via Android Central App

that is because they pulled it, without telling anyone, to fix the issues.

If this were samsung, they would be taken out with a stick and beaten. They were recently. The big difference is that the Nexus has the flexibility to push it out faster...

failed update is still failed.

We can run through the whole gamut of bashing at anytime now. Here I will start:

Google should have never pushed this out without beta testing it better. What this is 3 updates in 3 months? That is ridiculous that quality control is so poor that it needs to be like that. It used to be that there would be one update a year and now it is one a month.

I bashed em (see my post above). But this site and many who visit are so pro-Nexus, you'll rarely hear a peep of criticism. Google could put out seven updates in a week's time and they'd still be "Awesome! Look how great Google is at putting out updates fast!" Anyway, it's Google's M.O. (Modus Operandi); we are all beta testers to them. But I have to say it's gotten particular worse in the last year and not only with OS updates, but apps. I can't count how many updates there have been for GMail, Maps, and Youtube and they're still borked. :(

I don't know what is going on. I live in Florida, purchased both Nexus 5 through google play, and we still didn't get any updates...wtf

Go to Gmail and reset the password

----------------------------------------------------
So where is the competition for the Note 3? Oh right there isn't any...

No OTA updates pushed to my N5 here in SoCal. TMO purchased from Google.

Posted via Android Central App

I just received the 4.4.2 upgrade OTA for my 2012 Nexus 7, which was really quick compared to the 4.4 upgrade. There was no 4.4.1 upgrade for this device. It wen straight from 4.4 to 4.4.2. If you haven't gotten it yet, the links for the various Nexus devices are posted in this blog. Just make sure you download the correct one.

Why did Google have to go and mess with the radios??? Was anyone complaining about the radios??? This was supposed to be a CAMERA FIX. My Nexus 5 LTE (and a lot of other people's, check XDA) straight-up SUX now after 4.4.2. What a great trade, potential marginal camera improvement for borked freakin' LTE. Thanks Google.

Just installed the ota using TWRP 2.6.3.3 on my rooted Nexus 4 with Faux123 kernel without a problem unlike the 4.4.1 OTA which i had to flash the system image and stock kernel.. but i lost root but i will just flash supersu

Got the update this afternoon while walking down by the river with my dog and not trippin' on kit kat!
Honestly, I'm bored with it already. Think I'll wait for the Google OL' Lady 10000. Now there would be some updates to get excited about! The changelog might read: Improved Swallowing Action
Fixed Minor Bug Issues (ew! Lol)

Seriously though people, no matter how many updates you load, your device is never gonna suck your cock! Lmao!

Before I saw this post. Chked for update. I'm up to date ony nexus 4 4.4

Posted via Android Central App

Received this overnight... was downloaded and ready to install this morning on my N7 2013 WiFi... NICE!! Thanks GOOG!!

nuttin' on the N4 so far... :/

I'm glad this happened, because ever since upgrading to 4.4.1 only a few days ago, Google Play Services was misbehaving and giving me unacceptable battery drain. This initially happened in 4.4 due to the (seemingly) more power hungry Google Now, which I disable and got much better endurance. 4.4.2 has fixed this, but otherwise, I can't tell any difference from 4.4.1, at least on a front-end level.

Nothing on my Nexus 5 nor my 2012 Nexus 7 yet. I am not a sideloader so I'll just continue to wait.

This is why staged roll outs occur. To catch bugs and halt rollouts before too many get affected.

Posted via Android Central App on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (Android 4.2.2)

Still waiting on my N5 and both N7s. On the plus side I guess this wait is still waaaaaay shorter than relying on a Carrier to push OTAs.

I just installed the update on my Nexus 10. They still have not fixed the issue of docking apps in folders. Has anyone else experienced this issue. I put all my social network apps in a folder and some will not go in the folder by dragging the icon into the folder. Weird!

My wife has a Nexus 7 tablet (2013 edition) and she had her 4.4 KitKat update about a month ago. Cool additions, runs smooth and fast.

Finally hit on my N5. Didn't do any tricks. Just checked for the update. Interesting it said only available via wifi until Dec 13. I wonder why that would be? I wonder why they don't want you updating using cell data?

I wish there was a way to change that, I got notified about the update a bit a go finally but now I'm going to have to wait till I get home to dl it.

Supersu Pro "Survival" mode as able to keep root as well. So, I was able to update and keep root without touching a computer which was my goal.

Just got 4,2,2 in Tampa, Florida 4:10pm only thing I notice on nexus 7 2013, is a lot better screen touch response.

Posted via Android Central App

Still have not yet received android KitKat 4.4.2 for my nexus 5 here in the UK been waiting for a long time. Does anyone know when it should be rolling out here in the UK. Need KitKat 4.4.2

Posted via Android Central App

Updated my Rooted Nexus 7 2013 WIFI from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 OTA. 'Checked' Survival Mode in SuperSU settings and installed. Everything worked without a hitch. Still rooted on 4.4.2 :)

Hey man, if you had a custom kernel would you still be able to get the ota without bricking your device or losing root. Also, I have heard that OTA's reset kernels back to stock, will that occur?

Might not be new here but pictures now appear in Photos instead of Gallery when swiping right from the camera.

Posted via Android Central App

Guess I am Noob because it still says 4.4 under settings. Where does it say 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 anywhere. Or does it say KOT49H somewhere? any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Still no update for Nexus 4, never got 4.4.1 and now just hoping it skips it and I get 4.4.2.... waiting. Its weird because I have a friend with a nexus 4 and he's been getting updates way before me, consistently.

I just updated my Nexus 4 to 4.4.2 last night, and after the update, my contacts are not displaying properly (whatsapp & dial list) - most are showing only their numbers and no names are displayed. I looked into 'People' but the names were showing fine. I tried restarting but it's still the same. Can anyone help me to resolve this problem?

Got the OTA last night on my N7, and seems like the exchange active sync issues are resolved. I have 3 exchange accounts configured.

Hi,

My BF brought nexus 5, 4 days back and upgraded it to 4.4.2 yesterday..
ever since the upgrade, issues that we have noticed are as follows :

1. Not able to download anything from Play Store, his 3G is working fine as we can watch videos and surf.
2. Not able to transfer file throught wifi direct or fro bluetooth.

Is some one else facing this problem?
Is there any other solution except downgrading it?
What is the process of downgrading?

I have a weird problem. I download the OTA and flash it in the TWRP, and it's say failed this package is for "flo" devices. this is "deb"

But I'm using the wifi version, which is Flo ... what's that prbolem ... and how to fix it please !!
