Facebook tagging update

Facebook's Android app just got a little bit better as the social giant has pushed an update that adds in the ability to tag your friends in posts from within the app. Previously, you would have to load up the full website to get that functionality. As a reminder, to tag a friend you start by typing the "@" symbol and immediately start typing out the person's name. A box showing the most likely results pops up below the text entry field and you can close in on the person you want by typing more of their name.

Other features of version 1.5.3 include a "Find Friends" feature and the ability to add your phone number to your profile plus a smattering of bug fixes. Open the Android Market and go to "My Apps" to get the update or check out the download links past the break. Thanks to ZSearcy for the tip!

Facebook app updated, brings friend tagging to mobile

For the LOVE OF GOD!! HOW hard is it to implement push notifications ala BlackBerry/Iphone?? Guess it's back to either "Flow" or just the desktop version of FB on my EVO 4G.

I get notifications to my Evo 4G. They stopped for a while then it updated and started up again. Have not missed one since. I'm rooted and on Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1 by Flipz

Let me clarify. When you say "notifications" you mean what the app currently supports: "messages", "friend requests", "Event invites". That's it.

Black Berry and Iphone give you ALL notifications, "comments" on your comments, comments on your pictures, comments on your posts, "likes" etc. THAT is what this app is lacking, and it's unacceptable.

I've no idea why FB decides to slack off on the fastest growing Mobile OS in Android.

Astonishing.

Let me "clarify" On my Evo4G I get "ALL" let me say that again.... [pause for dramatic effect]......"ALL" notifications on my Evo4G! Not just the notifications in the menu....everytime I would get a notification on regular facebook on the computer! Yes...just like the iFone and crackberry!

I guess I don't understand... The settings in my facebook app only allow notifications for messages, friend requests, and event invites.

Any chance you could get a screen shot of these notifications? And a screen shot of your settings?

Agreed. I think there is some lack of communication here. The application simply doesn't support ALL notifications like BB/iPhone apps do. They alert/notify you as if you were browsing on your desktop.

I think what treyrey86 is talking about is when you go to the main screen of the fb app and touch the "Notifications" button at the bottom. The rest of us are talking are the active notifications on the notification bar on the top of our home screens.

I don't think that there is a miscommunication. I receive push notifications in my notification bar for everything from facebook i.e. comments on statues, comments on pictures, and pictures tagged of me. I also get the events, friend requests, and messages that you guys are saying you get. Those three use a different icon in the notification bar than the comments do. I am on a moto droid running CM 6.1.2

Amen! To me, those notifications when you open the app are not really "push ". My Gmail is push. It alerts me that I have an email without me having to open an app. This is how BB and iPhone FB apps function.

what they REALLY NEED TO FIX is the chat and messaging. it notifies me when i get a message but it never shows up in my inbox. and it WONT let me close NONE of my chat sessions...and the load time is terrible on 3g!!!

I've been getting notifications just fine for the last few weeks.... Droid 2 running stock 2.2. Loving tagging!!!!

Unbelievable that Facebook will not get with it given how popular android platform has become. Can't stand that this won't work on my Xoom and barely works on the Evo. You'd think they would test the most popular devices at a minimum.

What doesn't work on the XOOM? It's just stretched out overvthe screen and looks kinda crazy, but I have used it a few times in the past. Now my news feed only updates every eight hours if so, but other than that it seem just as ok as the phone version. OK is the keyword.

I too have an EVO4g. The app simply does not support all notification like the iPhone and "crackberry". Screenshot and then I'll believe.

you just have to go to the person your taggings page and click the camera icon and it'll let you tag them that way

The new update is bad don't update..force closes in the notification screen when you press the friends icon and messages...can't check in glad i backed my apps up with titanium :) I'll update when they fix the new bugs they created by fixing the old bugs lol

I'm cool with emails and the mobile site. Really.

I actually bought Flow but it has its own set of issues so it too was uninstalled.

wow anybody complaining this much needs to get a life outside of FB seriously if its that deep you need to get some sunshine and real social interaction aka......talking in the flesh....just saying

Just tried Flow out and it blows Facebook for Android away. Thanks for the suggestion people. Until they can get it right, I'm using Flow as my daily FB client.

it's taken way too long to get here, and it's STILL not better than Flow, the developer is great, pushes out new updates constantly, way more capability, options, customization. I don't even use the facebook app

FLOW is where it's at! Push notifications(gmail sync)? CHECK! Photo tagging? CHECK! Ability to "like"? CHECK! Easy to use UI? CHECK! Developer releases new updates consistently? CHECK!

Try FLOW out for free...once it has won you over, donate the $1.99 to get rid of the ads and support the app dev! He does hard work and takes his app SERIOUSLY...unlike the official social community app!
