Amazon may be about to go down to a new low in terms of prices for its Fire line of tablets. A new report says the company is planning to sell a 6-inch tablet this fall that will be priced at just $50. That's about half the cost of the current Fire HD 6 tablet, which Amazon is selling for $99.
The Wall Street Journal says:
To lower costs for the new 6-inch tablet, Amazon outsourced much of the development to overseas firms including Shanghai Huaqin Telecom Technology Co. and Taiwan's Compal Communications Inc., rankling some at its Lab126 unit, two of the people said. Compal has previously worked with Apple and Hewlett-Packard Co., among others.
Other than a mention that this tablet will have a mono speaker, rather than stereo, there's no word on the specific hardware specs for this super-cheap tablet. The same report also says Amazon is planning to launch new tablets that will have 8 and 10-inch screens this fall as well. Details and prices for those products were also not reported.
