If there's one single reason to use an Android device, Gmail may be it. What once was the world's longest beta test is undoubtedly (though we may be a little biased here) the best way to manage email. It's available anywhere, at any time. It makes it virtually impossible to accidentally lose mail. Plus it's as fast on mobile as it is on a powerful desktop computer.

Gmail does things a little differently, keeping your conversations as, well, threaded conversations — not just back-and-forth messages like back in the Dark Ages. It's a different way of doing things, but it works. And it works well.

If you haven't yet tried Gmail, you're absolutely missing out. Gmail comes standard with a Google account, and with it you'll get multiple gigabytes of free storage, so you shouldn't be running out of storage space any time soon.

The Android app continues to improve as well. It'll be refreshed with Google's new Material Design language. And it'll continue to lead the way for all other mobile email clients — especially on Android.

Froyo update brings Gmail bug to many

If you recently received your Froyo OTA, you may want to check to see if you're affected by a nasty little bug in the Gmail application by which any secondary accounts don't sync automatically.  Users of the Nexus One, HTC Desire, Droid Incredible, Sprint Evo 4G, and Droid 2 seem to be equally...

Newest Google apps bring welcome changes to Gmail

As is usually the case, a major update to one of Google's applications brings out a new version of what's popularly known as "Gapps or Gbits" -- a collection of all of Google's closed source applications for Android.  Updating the voice search application to include voice actions brings them out...

Froyo Feature: New and improved gmail

[YouTube link]What's Android without gmail, right? And in Android 2.2, the gmail app has gotten even better, fixing some of our biggest complaints and bringing better account switching, e-mail notification and attachment handling. Check it out.

Google updates gmail Web app

When Google thinks mobile, it thinks more than just Android. And that's evident by a recent update to the gmail Web app. The biggest new feature is that the address view has been redesigned, expanding so that you can actually see who you're sending a message to. Other improvements:Remove the...

Google CEO Eric Schmidt Keeps His Inbox Clean

It seems there are basically two kinds of gmailer's. The ones who keep every e-mail in their inbox with the goal to someday (and somehow) fill it, then the others that can not seem to delete it fast enough. Google CEO Eric Schmidt is one of those who doesn't prefer clutter in his inbox, or maybe he...

Gmail been flakey today? It's not just you

Yeah, we noticed. And seeing as how gmail is kind of the linchpin for any good Android experience, it's the sort of thing that we notice pretty quickly. But at least things are getting back to normal. You folks notice any issues today? [Google]

Using Gmail as your own personal push mail server

One of the biggest complaints from those migrating over from a Blackberry to an Android device has got to be e-mail.  We get used to doing things a certain way, and feel lost when things change.  Even if you’re not used to Blackberry’s push mail this is a great method to not only get things more...

Google offers to clean up your contacts

At the heart Android is, of course, Google. And that means gmail, which we love, as well as Google contacts, which we loathe. It's completely normal to end up with multiple contacts for a single person (I think I have five for Casey). Google has had the ability for a while now to merge contacts....

Archos 5 Gets Android Market, Google Maps, Gmail and More

The Archos 5 Android Tablet is powered by Android but lacks the Google Apps that 'with Google' devices come with. You know, the apps that make Android even better. Luckily, the hacking community has found a way to make those apps--Android Market, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Talk, and all the other...

Gmail Shows Which Google Talk Users are on Android

There's a new Gmail Labs feature that'll allow Gmail users to see which of their Google Talk contacts are using Google Talk on their Android devices. In short, it's awesome. The typical green/orange/red lights have been replaced with the cute Android robot icon we've loved since day one. In Google...

Google Apps Finally Leave Beta

We thought the day would never come but the perpetual BETA tag on the Google Apps Suite has finally been removed and Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Talk now have the distinction as ready for the public, or beta-less, software. It was always a running joke on how Gmail managed to...

Gmail Web App Gets Keyboard Shortcuts & Faster Auto-Complete

The Official Google Mobile Blog just announced some very cool new features to the Gmail Web App for Android. We'll get faster auto-completion for e-mail addresses which is semi-cool and support for keyboard shortcuts which is really cool. Though of course, we'd still use the native Gmail app in...

Enhanced Gmail and Calendar Web App for Android

Have you had a chance to check out Google's web app for Gmail and Calendar on your Android device lately? Google is touting it as "a new and improved experience when you access Gmail and Calendar through the browser" of your Android device. Improvements include things like the user interface to...

Gmail Is Down! Service Outage! UPDATE: Fixed!

UPDATE: Apparently everything is a-ok now! Did anyone get affected by this? Whoa, this is crazy. Gmail is currently down worldwide. Both Gmail consumer and business users aren't currently able to access their e-mail. However, I've gotten a few e-mails through my G1. How is Gmail on your G1...

MWC: Google Demos Offline Gmail for Android

Google snuck in a pretty cool feature for Android at MWC--Offline Gmail. If you're a big time Gmail User, you might know that a new Labs feature was implemented that allows offline viewing and using of your desktop Gmail account. Well, this is in the works for Android as well. You can basically...

Desktop Gmail Offering Location-Based Signatures

There's a cool new feature in Gmail Labs which allows you to include your location in your e-mail signature. It determines your location by either reading your IP address and estimating or if you install Google Gears' location module it can give you Wi-Fi triangulation which is much more accurate...

Android Market Is No Longer Beta

If you didn't notice, after the RC33 Update Android Market is no longer in BETA and is now presumably much better (joke). We're sure this isn't that big of a deal but it is interesting since Google typically places all its applications in beta purgatory. Case in point: GMail which launched 5 years...

Android Keyboard Shortcuts for Gmail

One of the biggest hassles in the Gmail program on Android is that the buttons you're going to want to use the most aren't easy to find. Sure, "Archive," "Label" and "Delete are simply two button pushes (underneath the menu) away, but Reply, Reply to All and Forward are on-screen buttons that...

HTC and T-Mobile Poke a little fun at Apple

Earlier this month Apple unveiled new iPods, specifically they called the new iPod Touch "The funnest iPod Ever." The grammatically incorrect formulation of "fun" caused much consternation amongst the former English majors in the Blogosphere, including yours-truly. With the above bit from HTC...
