'Optimus 3D MAX' branding rumored for next LG 3D phone

Earlier this week we saw reports that LG is preparing a successor to its Optimus 3D smartphone, to be unveiled at next month's Mobile World Congress. The LG CX2, as it's apparently codenamed, was to ship with a 1.2GHz CPU, 4.3-inch 3D WVGA NOVA display and dual 5MP cameras. Leaked renders also appeared, showing a device much thinner than the veritable brick that was the original Optimus 3D.

Today GSM Israel says it's learned from a "very reliable source" that the CX2's official branding will be "Optimus 3D MAX" (spelled the old-fashioned way, with just one X). If true, the new name would fit a device which appears to be more a refinement of last year's Optimus 3D than anything revolutionary.

It's likely we'll see more of the Optimus 3D MAX, or whatever it's called, in just a few weeks time at Mobile World Congress, so stay tuned.

  • too much 3D, just drop it all
  • Exactly. Its a gimmick and yields pictures that don't play well with any other platform. Still if MAX is a reference to a bigger battery (as in Razr MAXX) it would be welcome.
  • LG and HTC both fell down the 3D hole and look at what it did to them. Both are left making low def small screen phones while Samsung rides the big screen HD wave. Do you know anyone who actually sits and watches 3D on their phone? Get out of 3D and come back to reality.
  • What's the general consensus? 3D phones were an interesting yet failed experiment, right? I can't imagine HTC releasing another 3D phone. Was the Thrill 3D a flop?
  • Failed experiment until apple does it. Then it will be innovative.
  • I own the 3D Thrill and love the phone, I just wish that LG would support this phone and release the update to Gingerbread that they promised in October of last year, LG needs to remember there customers that have purchased phones in the past and this may promote business in the future.

  • I have an Evo 3D. Aside from being rushed to market before they worked out bugs, it's a great phone. The commenter above said something about loo res... Not this phone. It sports 965 lines. Consider this: I bought this phone almost 8 months ago, with a lot of the same hardware that the 3D Max is going to launch with. Sure, fab processes are smaller, efficiencies is better now, but hey, I've been rocking this for 8 months. It wasn't a failed experiment. I seldom use the 3D. I''ve fooled around with it a few times, and it works fine. It's something to play with if I feel the urge. Why all the negativity? I like having it there. To each, their phone... Just sayin'.
  • I also have a EVO 3D. It's a great phone with the additional capability of creating and viewing 3D content. I don't understand why some people are so negative about 3D. It works pretty well. I didn't buy it for the 3D, but I do use it and have found that 3D family videos are something special. 3D may not ever become as common as HD, but there is no doubt that it's here to stay. I would probably pay a premium for it in my next phone, and am also sure when Apple releases 3D it will be "the greatest thing ever".
  • I have the Optimus 3D and i think its better than the wildfire and wildfire s my phone never slows down on me its never crashed unlike the htcs ive had it has 8gb of storage...... and i use the 3D camera and video camera all the time as i have a 3D tv i can plug my phone in to and its like watching them on sky 3D its as good and the photos are brill too....
