Dropbox

Feeling brave? The friendly developers over at Dropbox have released a brand new experimental build, and they're willing to give you early adopters 5 GB of free storage for your troubles. For every 500 MB uploaded with version 2.0.9 you will earn an additional 500 MB of storage-- up to 5 GB total. Mind you that the freebie storage is account-related rather than app-related, which means that you'll be able to upload from your desktop to earn the space as well as from the app.

The new version comes with its fair share of new features, including:

  • Automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan
  • Brand new Camera Upload feature
  • Upload files of any size (no more 180 MB limit!)
  • Support for resuming file uploads when there are network issues
  • Various performance improvements & bug fixes

If beta builds don't give you the willies, you can grab the APK from the source link, where Dropbox is urging those who download to sing out as issues arise.

Dropbox releases new beta build, offers 5 GB of free storage to early adopters

I downloaded and installed this on my TBolt. It has worked, so far, without issues and I now have additional storage. :)

Did this yesterday. Downloaded the beta, managed to find 4.8gigs of pictures in put them in a folder. Converted that directory into an ISO, mounted the ISO, went to My Computer and right-click on the virtual drive and selected Auto-Run, got prompted if I wanted to import using Dropbox. DONE! It took a few hours to upload all those pictures but its ok because I did it last night, this morning I woke up to see that my storage went up to 8.5 gigs of free storage :-) I simply deleted all the pics and my storage stayed.

How long did it take to show the extra storage? I've downloaded the app, uploaded a few photos, but don't see that my storage has increased yet.

Mine turned up immediately.

I installed the apk on my phone, told it to auto-upload photos/videos, then switched to the camera app and just started shooting 1080p video.... of my desk, from about a millimeter away. I also took a couple of in-line photos while the video was recording.

I was logged into Dropbox on my work Mac -- (I have to specifiy "work" Mac so people don't think I'm crazy enough to actually want/buy one for personal use) -- anyway, I was logged in on the Mac at the same time and, about a minute into the recording, a DB message popped up on the Mac stating that my storage had been increased to 3.0GB (up from 2.5GB previously).

I checked and the video was only actually about 65MB, and the 3 photos only about a meg each, but I did indeed have the extra 500MB already. So I'm just going to leave the phone shooting video for the next 30 minutes and see where I end up! :)

You know what? I read that wrong. I thought you got 5GB immediately, and then you get an additional 500MB for the extra things you do. NEVERMIND

Nice! The sideload is easy and no immediate problems. New features look good. I'm presently downloading 4 gigs of pics and videos to get some of that free storage. I know some people whose porn collections alone could easily garner them the maximum 5 gigs. You know who you are.

Just a few?

I loaded the Beta earlier today and was getting a FC about once a minute. This with a Droid 3.

Did get an addional 500MB though so that was nice.

It's permanent space that Dropbox gives you as a gift for testing their beta app. I increased mine to 7.5GB last year, it's been over a year still have it. And now It's going to be 12.5GB. Dropbox lets you earn up to 20GB for free.

This may be a dumb question, but if I have some digital copies of movies that I bought saved on my computer can I upload them to Dropbox and watch them on my phone?

Oh, thanks for the reply.

Do you know of any good way to stream movies from your computer to the phone without having to setup a server?

VLC Direct pro can do that. It costs a few bucks for the pro version with streaming. I use the free version only as a remote for my computer so so I can't tell if streaming works well but connection is 100% hazzle free.

I used to use Orb to stream my music and videos to my phone during the Treo 600/650 days. I thought it worked great. I haven't tried it since though.

My account is not automatically increasing :/

Edit: I downloaded and installed version 2.0.9 on my phone and logged in using my drop box info. I have now uploaded about 1 GB of data and nothing.

Maybe you're having the same problem I was having... I didn't realize that dropbox has to "automatically upload" the files, meaning you need to shoot some video and let dropbox upload the files. I burned through about 8 gigs of transfer without getting anything more than the initial 500 megs.

I too wanted to take advantage of this I've uploaded about 1.6GB of "stuff" and I am still at the 2GB level. I even tried to invite friends and one of them signed up and still no extra space. Does anyone know WTF?

the catch is you only have the space for the next year i mean, thats not a bad deal at all but just saying

That's not true.. YOu have that extra space for ever...Last year I increase my space in a similar way from 2GB to 7.5GB it's been over a year, still have it.

Worked great...Increased my space from 7.5GB to 12.5GB
Make sure to use the android to upload content. I first just draged files into dropbox folder on my windows 7 computer, nothing was happening. Then I coppied about 4.5GB pictures in my camera picture folder on my EVO 3D's SD card and activated camera upload under dropbox settings on my phone. As my first picture was uploaded..BAMM!! it increased my space by 500MB, after that it started to increase my space by 500MB every 500MB upload.
Hope That helps...

BTW, if you have Windows 7 the command for this is "fsutil file createnew 1gb 1073741824" in a command prompt

You dont have to use your Android to upload it to get the space. I uploaded about a GB of photos direct from my Camera and then deleted thema dn it gave me to full 5GB instantly. Learned about the extra space on Slickdeals first and so I'm up to 9GB free with only 1 referral credit so far.

Did anyone else get this email?

Congrats on becoming a Dropbox Guru! We've awarded you 3GB of bonus space for the next 12 months! You now have 5.25GB on Dropbox. To get even more space, check out our upgrade options.

Thanks again for supercharging your HTC phone with Dropbox!

Enjoy, - The Dropbox Team

Is it still working for anyone? I uploaded from my computer until my Dropbox was at 2GB, at that point it stopped uploading and said I'm out of space. Then I go the same message while trying to upload a video from my phone.

It didnt work for me. I downloaded apk and signed in on my phone. I uploaded files successfully from my phone after 1 force close, but no extra space. Now I just get an error saying my dropbox is full.

To anybody not getting their extra space:

I burned through about 8 gigs of data transfer without getting anything more than the initial 500 megs. I've discovered that at 1080p (Galaxy Nexus) 7.5 minutes is about 500 mb, so just record a few videos as HD as you can make them (I didn't just to 1 file because I like seeing the periodic messages that my space increases) and let dropbox just upload automatically.

There appears to be a "forum beta" of the desktop app that you can also use to help get extra space, but I haven't investigated that.

tl;dr - I didn't get my extra space until I recorded some HD video

Doesn't seem to work beyond the 500MB extra. I was at 2GB before, now with multiple uploads, including HD video on my G-Nex, I only get 2.5GB.

Too bad. Wish I could have gotten the 5GB. If anyone knows how, please post.
