AT&T announces six new Android devices with LTE

25

At its Developer Summit at CES today, AT&T has announced a whopping six new Android devices that will run on its 4G LTE network --

  • Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD, with a 4.65-inch HD SuperAMOLED screen, available in "coming months".

  • Sony Xperia Ion, with a 4.6-inch HD screen and 12MP camera. Powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and exclusive to AT&T. Features Sony branding as opposed to Sony Ericsson.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note -- we've seen this one before, and reviewed the international version. It's a 5.3-inch phone/tablet hybrid with pen input, an HD SuperAMOLED 1280x800 display

  • Pantech Element -- An LTE tablet, available for $300 on-contract from Jan. 22. Runs Honeycomb (Android 3.2) on an 8-inch display.

  • Pantech Burst -- a budget LTE phone that'll retail for $50 on contract, available from Jan. 22.

  • Samsung Exhilarate -- a budget-oriented phone made from 80% recycled materials, with a 4-inch SuperAMOLED display.

Much more to come on these devices, folks, but in the meantime we've got pictures of all six from the event after the jump, along with official presser from AT&T.

Hands on with the Huawei Ascend P1/P1S

8

After Huawei's song-and-dance this morning at CES, the press got some quality hands-on time with the company's newest flagship device, the Ascend P1/P1S. The P1S is the thinnest smartphone on the market today (the P1 has an LTE radio and therefore is a bit fatter -- you'll see in some comparison shots in the gallery), and it's a fact that is immediately recognizable. The device is impossibly thin and light, and truly has the potential to live up to its promise and propel Huawei into the thick of the US smartphone market. Hit the break for my full impressions.

LG Viper 4G LTE coming to Sprint with Android 2.3 and NFC

25

To go along with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus that will be arriving with LTE on Sprint, another device will also be joining the party. The LG Viper 4G LTE is Android 2.3 powered device, with a 5MP shooter on the back and VGA quality front-facing camera. Underneath the hood, it's packing a 1.2GHz processor and will come loaded up with NFC, Google Wallet and HotSpot capability all laid out on a 4-inch WVGA NOVA display.

No telling yet where this device will come in when it comes to pricing but we're hoping it comes with an upgrade path to Android 4.0 at some point, otherwise -- our interests aren't all that piqued. Full press release from Sprint can be found past the break for you all.

ASUS announces Eee Pad MeMO ME171 and new Transformer Prime TF700T

29

ASUS is bringing the Ice Cream Sandwich love in 2012 with the EeePad MeMO ME370T ME171, and a new upmarket model Transformer Prime, the TF700T.  The new Prime, which doesn't replace the existing Transformer Prime we all know and love, has a few upgrades from the original model, namely a 1920x1200 display, a 2MP front camera for HD video conferencing, and a re-designed back plate for better Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS reception.  It will use the same docking station and battery life should be very comparable to the current TF201 Transformer Prime.

The MeMO is a 7-inch tablet with an emphasis more on media and entertainment than productivity.  Bundled are applications like MyPainter, MyNet, MyCloud, Asus Sync and other productivity and entertainment applications, making it an ideal tablet for folks who want the 7-inch form factor.  Its full specs:

  • 7.0” WXGA,  1280 x 800 resolution,  IPS panel with capacitive touch
  • Qualcomm 8260 1.2GHz dual-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB/32GB storage; ASUS Webstorage options
  • Wifi 802.11b/g/n , Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, aGPS
  • Camera- 1.2MP Video Camera (front)/5MP Auto-Focus Camera (rear) with 1080P recording
  • G-sensor; e-compass; Light sensor; Gyroscope, Proximity sensor
  • MicroUSB port (client); Audio Jack (Head Phone/Stereo Mic-in); Card Reader (MicroSD); microHDMI (1.3a); SIM Card slot; Stereo Speakers
  • Li-polymer 4400mAh battery (Battery Life: 8.5hrs video playback routine)
  • Android 4.0.1
  • Dimensions/Weight- 7.8 x 4.6 x 0.50”; 14.2oz

We don't have exact dates for either of these beauties, but we expect the MeMO sometime in Q2 of 2012.

Update: We just heard from ASUS, and there was a slight mix-up with the model numbers.  The MeMO referenced in this post is actually the ME171.

Huawei introduces its flagship Ascend P1/P1S smartphone

10

Huawei kicked off CES right this morning by introducing its Ascend P1 S, the world's new king of thin. It's officially the world's thinnest smartphone, though the P1 model is slightly thicker due to its LTE connectivity. Richard Hu, Chairman of Huawei devices, was on hand to make his company's intentions quite clear: Huawei is a major player in the smartphone market, and with its Ascend P1, it can compete with the big names here in the States. Hit the break for more photos from the event.

Sprint Galaxy Nexus is officially official

106

Update: Sprint has gotten in touch to let us know that the 16GB was posted in error, and in fact their version of the Galaxy Nexus will come with 32GB of internal storage.

Following their recent 4G LTE announcement, Sprint has a new landing page which now reveals one of the first devices to run on its shiny new network -- the Samsung Galaxy Nexus! Sprint's not offering up full specs or pricing just yet, but the site says it'll feature the Google Wallet functionality that's been conspicuously absent from other Galaxy Nexus models thus far. There was also no confirmation of the bump up to a 1.5 GHz CPU that was suggested by a leaked online ad late last week.

Besides that, it's presumably the same Galaxy Nexus we know and love, on Sprint!

More: Sprint Landing Page; press release Thanks, dtice03

Intel gives brief tease of Android at CES

3

We're still waiting on an official look at what's coming from Intel in regards to Intel hardware and Android software. (You'll recall how it was long ago stated that ICS would place nice with Intel processors.)

At Monday morning's CES press conference, it was all ultrabooks, all the time. Mostly. We did get a very brief look at what looks like Ice Cream Sandwich on some sort of tablet device. No great surprise to see something like this in the works, and we're chomping at the bit for a little more from the processor manufacturer.

Intel's got a keynote address on Tuesday afternoon, so stay tuned.

The Ascend P1 S will be the world's thinnest smartphone, measuring in at 6.68 mm thin. The P1 is the same phone, just a tad thicker (most likely for the LTE markets).

The specs for the P1/P1 S sound very intruguing:

  • 1.5 GHz dual-core processor
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 8MP rear camera with 1080p recording
  • 1.3MP front-facing camera with 720p recording

  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB ROM
  • Quadband (GSM/GPRS/EDGE)
