LG QuickMemo coming to the U.S. for the LG Viper 4G LTE on July 16th

2

LG QuickMemo, which is a feature that allows you to draw on your phone without a stylus, will be arriving in the United States on July 16th, first appearing on the LG Viper 4G LTE from Sprint. QuickMemo essentially allows you to leave messages or reminders for yourself on web pages, photos, emails, etc. Screenshots of these 'memos' will then be available to share easily for future use. If you already own a LG Viper 4G LTE, you will receive a free update, which will give you the feature. If you don't have a Viper 4G LTE, QuickMemo will be coming to other U.S. LG devices 'later this year'.

Once you receive the update, sing out in the LG Viper 4G LTE Forum, we'd love to hear what you think!

Songza updated with suggested playlists

2

Songza, a free music service that somehow manages to get away not serving up audio ads, has updated their Android app with a feature called Concierge. Concierge has been available on iOS for awhile, and now Android users can get suggested music based on the time of day. For example, this Tuesday afternoon, the app offers expert-curated playlists for the summertime, needing an energy boost, or work/study music without lyrics. After picking your current situation, you can provide additional criteria to further tailor a playlist to your mood.

There are a bunch of different ways to explore playlists, including by mood, activity, genre, decade, or tailored based on your listening habits. Songza has all of the other standard features you'd expect from a streaming music app, like marking songs as favorites, and sharing tracks over Facebook and e-mail.

Songza for Android for is optimized for ICS and available for download at the link below. Just keep in mind that though the web streaming service might be available in your area, the mobile app might not be - that's the case here in Canada, anyway.

Sky News app for Android gets updated with better image support for tablets

0

This may not be the biggest app update of the year but due to the popularity of the Sky News app I thought it was news worthy.

Todays update brings only one new feature and that is high resolution images for large screen devices. We all know that Android smartphones seem to be getting bigger and with better screen technology. So it makes sense that apps take full advantage of this.

In addition, the update will be perfect for Tablets. With the Google Nexus 7 recently announced and due to hit the shelves this month I suspect that app developers are under the same opinion as me; that the tablet is going to be a hugely popular piece of hardware. Once again, a perfect reason for devs to update their apps to make them look as fantastic as possible on a larger screen.

Wacom Bamboo stylus review

11

The Wacom Bamboo Stylus  is one of your best options for handwriting and drawing on your Android phone or tablet. It also is a great alternative to your greasy fingers for day to day navigation around the device.

We have all found, at one time or another, that touching the screen leaves fingerprints and grime on the screen. We have also found that our fingers are fat and clumsy when it comes to painting, making that masterpiece in Draw Something and writing.

So, we need something with a capacitive end or nib to touch the screen in a far more precise way to really take advantage of some of the newer apps.

Apps like Sketchbook Mobile, Note Everything and Handwrite will be used to judge the overall qualities of the stylus.

Read on for our full Wacom Bamboo stylus review!

Samsung hails 'record' first day Galaxy S III sales in Korea

9

Samsung has revealed that its flagship Galaxy S III sold 50,000 units in its first day on sale in South Korea. The phone, which in Korea ships with a quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM and 4G LTE connectivity, more than doubled the day one sales of its predecessor, the Galaxy S II. The original Galaxy S sold 10,000 on its first day in Korea, while the Galaxy S II hit 24,000. The S III launched on SK Telecom, KT and LG U+ yesterday, and the manufacturer said it hit a new record for sales of a Samsung product in a single day.

That 50,000 will go some way towards helping Samsung hit its goal of selling 10 million S III phones worldwide by the end of July. Last year the company sold more than 20 million Galaxy S IIs, some 5 million of which came from its home country.

Motorola announces the RAZR V for Canada

13

Motorola really loves their RAZR line, thinking back years ago to the old flip phone, and then more recently to the remodeled device that was quickly outdone by the RAZR MAXX. Today Motorola has announced the Motorola RAZR V, which will be destined for Canada. Coming in at only 8.4mm the device is extremely thin, but being covered in DuPont Kevlar fiber it is also remarkably strong as well.

In addition to all the normal goodies we are used to seeing, Motorola has also included something very unique called SMARTACTIONS. These smart actions will make using the device even more of a pleasure, and easier on you as well. Your device will now be able to know when you plug headphones in that you want to launch a specific app or playlist, or change some device settings to help save battery when it is getting a bit low. The application can automate many daily tasks, and make things much easier on you, which is always a huge plus. The device is set to launch in Q3 in Canada, and should be available from many of the large retailers. Hit the break for the full release.

Motorola reveals new budget Android smartphone, the MOTOSMART

4

Today Motorola has offered up a new budget Android device for the UK in the form of the MOTOSMART. The specs of the device are certainly nothing to get excited about -- this one is all about the cost. Due for release at the end of July, T-Mobile will be selling the MOTOSMART on contract for just £7 per month. Carphone Warehouse will also stock the device and you can pick it up on pay-as-you-go for a mere £89.99.

The MOTOSMART sports a 3.5' display, a 3 megapixel camera and runs Android 2.3. Everything else is pretty much as you would expect. Moto's not saying what's powering the device.

The new handset is clearly designed for the budget market, and coming in at that price, it does undercut Huawei' Ascend G 300 by a few pounds.

If you can handle the MOTOBLUR user interface then you may grab yourself a bargain.

You can find the full press release from Motorola below.

Motorola Atrix HD gets officially official on AT&T, for $99 on July 15

32

It's big, sleek, slim and covered in Kevlar, and it's just $99 - it's the Motorola HD on AT&T.

You knew it was coming, and here it is officially -- the Motorola Atrix HD on AT&T. Motorola inadvertently outed this one a week ago, but let's have another look at the specs, shall we?

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 1.5 GHz dual-core processor
  • 4.5-inch 1280x720 HD ColorBoost display
  • Gorilla Glass
  • 8GB on-board storage, with expandable microSD card slot
  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor
  • 8MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording, 1.3MP front facing camera
  • 1780 mAh battery
  • 1GB RAM
  • LTE
  • Smart actions.

All in all, nothing you probably weren't expecting. But the $99 price tag isn't to be ignored. That's pretty darn cheap for a new. In fact, it's pretty much AT&T's version of the Motorola RAZR. Not that that's a bad thing, and the Atrix HD changes things up a little bit by moving to on-screen buttons, which some of us have once again found ourselves in favor of. Webtop? Meh, yeah. It's there. But we'd rather see someone do something with Ubuntu for Android, quite honestly. But for a mere Benjamin, the Atrix HD's probably worth a look.

ICS update for AT&T Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II Skyrocket available from today

38

AT&T and Samsung have announced that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update is now available for the AT&T-branded Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II Skyrocket. The updates are based on version 4.0.4, but stick with the old style TouchWiz 4 UI, so you'll have to dig a little deeper to find ICS-specific stuff. Nevertheless, both devices should enjoy a noticeable performance boost on the more recent version of Android.

The AT&T Note also gets a few extra treats along with its ICS update. As we covered in our hands-on preview a few days back, the Note ICS update is bundled with a new "premium suite", including an enhanced S Memo app, a new S Note app and My Story, a new multimedia postcard app.

The updates follow last week's AT&T Galaxy S II ICS release, meaning all of the carrier's S II-class devices have now been brought up to Android 4.0. To pick it up, you'll need to connect your phone to a PC and fire up the Samsung Kies desktop application.

If you like reading press releases, we've got one from Samsung after the break.

EVO 4G LTE's Google Wallet fix looks to be coming soon

14

If you own a HTC EVO 4G LTE on Sprint you are probably not happy knowing that you don't have any Google Wallet support at this time, and the most recent update didn't bring you any either. The listing for Google Wallet in the Google Play Store has been updated with an interesting tidbit of information for EVO 4G LTE owners, saying it will remain unavailable "until an OTA update in July." Well, it's July now! And for the next three weeks. So let's just throw one of those "coming soon" lines atcha and be confident that Google will live up to its word here.

How to pronounce Huawei the official way

40

It seems that Huawei must be getting slightly ticked off at people incorrectly pronouncing their company name. They have gone so far as to create the above video, where they teach the good people of New York how to say it right.

It turns out I am guilty of saying it incorrectly myself. The official pronunciation is 'WAH-WAY" which will feel a bit odd to native English speakers. Like many I suspect I have been using the 'HOW-WAY' variation, which we now know to be bad and wrong.

Huawei's sales have gone through the roof in recent years -- the company turned over $32 Billion last year which was a 11% increase on 2010. With the Chinese company now selling its own brand devices overseas, it makes sense that it's trying to get consumers better acquainted with its name.

At least now we know. And knowing is half the battle.

Huawei Ascend D1 goes on sale in China, Russia to follow next month

2

Huawei has announced that the Ascend D1, a dual-core, Ice Cream Sandwich-powered device, will be launched next month in Russia. This comes a matter of days after the D1 went on sale in Huawei's premier market, China.

The little brother to the as yet unreleased Ascend D Quad, the D1 is by no means a slouch. Packing a 1.5GHz TI OMAP processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.5-inch 1280x720 HD IPS+ display covered by Gorilla Glass and coming in at just 8.99mm thick, the D1 is a pretty tasty looking mid-range device. Storage is only 8GB though, but it does pack an 8MP rear shooter. No on-screen buttons either, the D1 goes the route of the majority of ICS devices so far, and has the three capacitive buttons instead.

The D1 is available now on vmall.com, Huawei's online 'shopping mall' for ¥ 2499 (£252/$392). When launched in Russia, carrier LANCK Telecom will be picking it up. Details of availability in other markets is "to follow," and with Huawei's recent efforts to push out into the western market, we may just see the Ascend D1 in other European markets, and possibly even North America to come. The full presser can be found after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus ICS updates begin rolling out

5

Following last week's Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 updates, it's the turn of the Tab 7.0 Plus to receive the newly obsoleted Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.  First to get the update will be the Austrian Wifi and 3G version of the tablet (GT-P6200), and the new software version should bring the Tab's UI in line with Galaxy Tab 2 products, while eliminating some of the weird lag that's characterized most Honeycomb devices. You'll also get the standard suite of ICS features, like face unlock and the new swipe-able multitasking menu.

Austrian Wifi and 3G Tab 7 Plus owners in Austria should be able to update now over-the-air, or through Samsung's Kies desktop software. Owners of the Wifi-only version (as well as Tabs 8.9 and 10.1) will likely have a little longer to wait, though at this point what's a few extra days?
