Wall Street Journal comes to Android Tablets

1

Itching to get the Wall Street Journal on your Android device?  If you have a Galaxy Tab, you can.  In an unusual move, the Journal released an app for Android tablets before/without having one available for traditional handsets.

When asked about the reason for the timing of their release, they responded:

“Our strategy is to serve readers whenever, wherever, and it’s critical that the Journal’s unparalleled news and analysis are available in a high-quality format across multiple devices and platforms,” said Daniel Bernard, chief product officer for The Wall Street Journal Digital Network. ”The WSJ Tablet Edition for Android continues to blend the best of print and online with an experience that showcases our strength of innovation and original delivery of content.”

The app will allow users to read stories from that day's newspaper, retrieve stock market information, and view full screen videos from the news service.  The daily paper will be "delivered" every morning once it is published, downloading to your device automatically.

The app itself is free, but to gain access to all content, there will be a $3.99-a-week subscription fee.  Current Journal subscribers can gain access to the full tablet app free for a limited time.

The Journal might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a sign that big companies are starting to notice Android's growth.

If you have a tablet and you want to give it a try, let us know how it looks. Download links are after the break.  [Via an.droid-life.com and The Next Web]

PowerAMP updated -- gets new features and a $4.99 price tag

32

PowerAMP, a feature-rich music player for Android that we detailed a couple weeks ago, has finally graduated to a full version complete with a $4.99 price tag.  Some of you will say that $4.99 is a bit steep for a music player, but the five-star ratings and positive market comments are piling up.  "This is the best audio player I've ever tested.  I would have paid 2x what they're asking!" writes one satisfied buyer.  With awesome features such as the heavily lauded equalizer, album art grabber, and lock screen controls, MaxMP's PowerAMP aims to be one of the top music players available on Android.

Recent changes include:

  • All Artist Songs via header in Artists->Albums list
  • Shuffle by Artist/Album/Genre selection for SHUFFLE button
  • Option to enable "return to player" button in Folders/Library
  • Option to hide Equalizer Deck in portrait mode
  • Other fixes and improvements

To purchase the full version of PowerAMP, you'll first have to install the trial version of PowerAMP, and then purchase the full version unlocker.  A simple market search for "Poweramp" will yield the exact downloads you need.

Japanese Galaxy S and Darth Vader go hand-and-hand, right? [video]

17

Android more and more these days seems to be synonymous to the Star Wars Universe. We first saw Verizon name its initial Android phone as the Motorola Droid. A "Droid," is another name for robots in the Star Wars Universe. Since the Droid name and branding is owned by Lucasfilm, Verizon must license the name. Soon after, to celebrate 25 years of "The Empire Strikes Back," Verizon and Motorola created an R2-D2 branded Droid 2. Keeping up?

To add more to the Android and Star Wars camp -- Japanese carrier NTT Docomo is advertising the Samsung Galaxy S along side the Sith Lord, Darth Vader. It's an odd commercial, no doubt. Vader in this ad, isn't the Vader we think we know -- he runs through flocks of birds, dances in the club, enjoys boat rides, and more. Even though the commercial doesn't make any sense, our favorite Sith Lord is welcome to the Android club. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Droid 2 Global gets introduced by Motorola in video form

11

At this point we're starting to wonder if Verizon is even really going to bother with giving the Droid 2 Global an official announcement. The device is already available for pre order on the Verizon website along with the Droid Pro, yet Motorola is the one doing the introducing the device to the world via a new video. Rather weird if you ask us, but surely at some point Verizon will make some sort of announcement. While we wait, hit the video after the break for some Droid 2 Global goodness. [via DroidLife]

Samsung Captivate case review: Seidio Innocase II Surface

13

The Seidio Innocase II Surface for the Samsung Captivate is a solid case that will keep your phone light while protecting it from scratches.

It comes with two pieces that fit together. At first, I was skeptical at this approach as I felt it would easily fall apart, making it nearly unusable. But I have never had it come apart thus far, and it's still easy to remove it in order to reach the battery, microSD or SIM card slot.

One of the best aspects of the Galaxy S hardware in my opinion is how lightweight all of the devices are. This case does its best not to add much bulk to the phone and it does a good job (it's only 1mm thin). The interior of the case boasts a felt lining that will work to protect the Captivate from wear and tear of the product.

To put it on your device, separate it into two pieces. Then slide them onto the phone with the bottom part fitting just underneath the top. Pick it up to ensure that it fits snuggly and you're good to go.

If you've been looking for a good case for the Captivate that doesn't add bulk, consider the Seidio Innocase II Surface, available from the Android Central store for $29.95. Find more pictures after the break.

Celebrity Tweets app makes it easy to stalk your favorite celebrities

5

Ever wish that you could easily follow all of your favorite celebrities on Twitter without having to clutter your time line and risk missing something from a friend? Celebrity Tweets by XIMAD was designed with these users in mind and is a one-stop shop for your daily dose of randomness from celebrities. Once the application is launched it will take you to a very basic screen that allows you to select between favorites, people, trends or to make a search.

First-time users will enter the people tab to browse a list of over 300 celebrities and from here they are able to select various celebrities to become their favorites, which they can later easily access from the favorites tab on the main screen. Trends will allow you to easily view the top trending topics at that time on Twitter, and search will allow you to find a user without having to scroll through the list under people. If you enjoy following the life of some of these crazy celebrities, and prefer not to clutter your Twitter time line, this free application is certainly a must have for you!

If you have any feedback, or suggestions for the developer, be sure to leave them for XIMAD in their developer forum.

Samsung Contintuum video test

6

Warning: Image opens in a new window. And it's big.

We've gotten a pretty good look at the Samsung Continuum, first with our initial preview and video hands-on, and this week at the official launch event. But one thing we haven't see is the 5MP camera.

The bad news is that we only have the one still shot, which you can see above. And it's pretty meh. But after the break, we have the 720p video recording in action, and it's pretty good. Check it out.
