Hey there, everybody!  This week we’re going to talk about something everyone seems to forget  - system maintenance and clean-up.  Like any computer, our Android devices can get clogged with old info that builds up until performance starts to be affected.  Unlike a computer with Gigs of space, our device's storage space is limited so this can happen in a much shorter time span.  If your phone is starting to act a bit sluggish this might be the reason.  Freeing up some space and getting things back as they used to be isn’t hard at all once you know where to look for the clutter.  Drum roll, please ... We've known for a while that the Nexus One would be coming to Verizon. We just didn't know when. Well it seems that we have finally gotten a date. March 23 is the date that the much awaited Nexus One reportedly will be available. According to an anonymous source, speaking to NeoWin:

The Nexus One, originally released on T-Mobile in January, has passed FCC inspection for use on Verizon's CDMA network and according to a Google worker who wishes to remain anonymous it will be made available on March 23.

We don't know how much it's going to cost on the Verizon Network, but currently the Nexus one is selling for $529 unlocked, or $179 with a two year contract from T-mobile. [neowin]

The Firefox for Mobile folks teased us today with a couple more pics of the browser on Android phones. There's the shot of it above that they posted on their Facebook page, and they also linked to another running on the Nexus One. There's still a lot of work to be done, and we still don't have any builds that non-coder types can play with. (If you don't mind compiling your own code, you can play along here.) If you just have to know more about the ins and outs of the project, check out Ars Technica's early go. Otherwise, fold your hands and wait patiently like the rest of us.

Myxer, which delivers mobile entertainment such as videos, ringtones, wallpapers, etc. to mobile devices has come up with some fun and interesting statistics that give more info about Android. First, Android seems to do a good job versus the iPhone in the West & Midwest. According to Myxer's mobile metrics, Android users outpace iPhone users in eight states, seven of those states being in the West & Midwest. There's also 'swing states' which are termed as states where the difference in users is less than 10%. Again, Android represents well in the West/Midwest region: three of the five swing states are in the West/Midwest.

The best reasoning for Android doing so well in the West/Midwest region of the US is likely more because the iPhone's sole carrier, AT&T, doesn't do well. If you take a look at AT&T's 3G coverage map, there's a gigantic hole in that whole region. Verizon's (home of the Droid and others) 3G network seems perfectly fine.

Other stats of note:

• Nexus One is the 'manliest': 75% of Myxer users with a Nexus One are male
• 67% of both Samsung Behold II & T-Mobile myTouch are female
• Nexus One has largest percentage (54%) of users over 24
• T-Mobile G1 has the largest percentage (63%) of users under 24

Even though these mobile metrics aren't without their biases, it's always fun to look at numbers like this. So, any Android users from those green states on the map? Let us know!

Surprisingly, Android Market doesn't currently support paid applications in Canada (11 other countries have access to paid apps). But given that Canadian carriers have built a rather formidable Android product lineup, getting paid apps on Android Market in Canada should be pretty high priority. And it looks like it's so, according to the Montreal Gazette, "Google is working on the problem and hopes to make an announcement next week." Score one for our neighbors to the north.

Why'd it take so long? Wendy Rozeluk of Google Canada says:

"There are many factors that come into play to make sure the selling and purchasing processes run smoothly. It takes time to bring support to more countries, which is something we are working hard to do"

Right. If it's any consolation, at least Android Market has a ton of free apps available.

So that maintenance update that's been rolling out for the Motorola Cliq on T-Mobile? Stay away. Stay far away. Basically it borks the phone pretty good, from keyboard issues to text message issues to time issues to causing your face to break out in hives. (OK, we made that last one up.) In other words, if you haven't installed the update, don't. And if you have installed the update, for frak's sake don't hard-reset your phone. Here's the official word from T-Mobile.

Thanks everyone for informing us on what the latest Motorola Cliq OTA update has brought to light. We want to let everyone know that we have been reading your comments, and we hear you. We have forwarded your concerns to the appropriate people and are working hard on them.

As of now, we advise you not to Master Reset your phone if your OTA update did not download or if you are experiencing issues at this time. ‘

Don't want to get anybody's hopes up yet, but a CDMA version of the Nexus One has made its way through the Federal Communications Commission. Does that mean we're going to get the Nexus One on Sprint as well as Verizon? Not necessarily. It just means the hardware (Read our Nexus One review) has been tested and approved. Good news for our pals in the United Kingdom: The HTC Desire is coming your way in a month. T-Mobile UK tweeted this morning:

The Desire will be available on the 26th of March. Thanks for all the questions. Keep them coming. Ryan

That differs from T-Mo's Web site, which still says the Desire is "Due April 2010." But regardless, it's coming. Stay tuned. [Twitter via Tracy and Matt]

T-Mobile actually did well in the fourth quarter of 2009. They added 371,000 new customers in 4Q compared to losing 77,000 in 3Q. It's still not as good as what they did in 4Q 2008 (added 621,000) but it's a step in the right direction. Since they offer very competitive rate plans and we're the first carriers to adopt Android, we'll always have a soft spot in our hearts for T-Mobile, so it's good to see them improving their financial numbers.

To be fair, their boost in numbers were due in large portion to pre-paid customers (which are less valuable to the bottom line than contract customers) so it's not the most ideal situation just yet. Here are some highlights, if you're into looking at numbers feel free to hit the link.
