Hands-on redux with the HTC Legend, Android 2.1 and Sense

19

HTC Legend Hands-on

Hold the HTC Legend for the first time, and it's instant love. Let a month go by and come back to it, and you start to wonder how you ever did without it.

Such is the case with the Legend, Android 2.1 and HTC's custom Sense user interface. (Read our preview of the Sense here.) A little more than a month after we were in Barcelona for its unveiling at Mobile World Congress, it's time to give the Legend and its unibody design another spin.

Initial hands-on after the break, and look for a full review in the coming days.

Steve Jobs, Eric Schmidt have coffee, plan world domination (or something like that)

26

Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt

Arch rivals! Bitter enemies! Coffee lovers! We've read plenty on the supposed relationships -- personal and business -- between Google and Apple, and how they've broken down over the past year or so. But, sure enough, Gizmodo snagged a shot of Apple's CEO and Google's CEO sharing a table and having a cup o' joe (and some juice, too). Steve Jobs, clad in his trademark black mock turtleneck, jeans and New Balance sneakers, and Eric Schmidt, going a little more business casual sans tie with khakis, a pullover and shoes that likely cost more than you make in a month.

Anyhoo, Giz's tipster reportedly overheard a couple of lines: "They're going to see it all eventually so who cares how they get it," and "Let's go discuss this somewhere more private."

Giz opines that "it" has something to do with Web content, which could well be true. Or maybe it's about Apple's recently lawsuit against HTC (and by proxy, Google's Android OS). Or it could be those long-rumored incriminating pictures from the 2002 Apple board meeting that are rumored to have involved an iPhone prototype, three strips of bacon and two cans of Cheese Whiz. Insert your own caption, basically.

So does the fact that they were "caught" (or seen precisely where their PR folks wanted them to be seen, more likely) on a neutral site (as in out of eithers' office, though apparently the cafe's owned by former Google exec Charlie Ayers) mean anything? Who knows. But it makes for great fodder, doesn't it? One more pic after the break.

Samsung's Galaxy S presentation at CTIA

6

Samsung S Life

To say Samsung went all out with its announcement of the Galaxy S (see our initial hands-on and software walkthrough) would be an understatement, first with the tease at the Day 1 keynote, then the full-fledged presentation immediately thereafter.

We've seen highlights of the events, and after the break we show you what it was like to be in the front row for the full 18-minute (yeah, it was that long, but entertaining) explainer of how Samsung's S Life is supposed to work for you. The video's in two parts, so make sure you check them both out.

HTC Hero gets 2.1 upgrade April 26 – in Taiwan

15

HTC Hero

Good news for HTC Hero owners, sort of. HTC has announced on Plurk that they will be rolling out the Éclair goodness for Taiwanese users on April 26th. My own source at HTC America can’t confirm or deny any release date for other countries, but this is official word from HTC finally.

If you haven’t already hacked 2.1 onto your Hero, this should be some welcome news. Just don’t count on it too much, ask a Motorola Droid user about release times for updates and how they can change. [engadget]

PayPal Bump is Android-bound

2

paypal logo

What’s that I hear? PayPal bump coming to Android, and no longer only found on the iPhone? Yes, it is indeed true, as PayPal has announced they will be bringing this great feature to multiple platforms, instead of just keeping on the iPhone. For those of you that may not know what this feature is, this will allow you to simply bump phones (just don’t go slamming them into each other) to transfer funds from one account to another. This feature is rather handy for quickly settling debts right on the spot, but won’t be much help for those doing long-distance deals. During an interview at CTIA, CNET was informed that the application for the Android and BlackBerry should be rolling out in the next two or three months. [CNET via Gizmodo]

Google shelling out payments to Android adopters

12

google

Ever wonder what would cause a phone company or cell phone carrier to support the Android OS? (Besides it being totally cool, of course?) MocoNews cites anonymous sources that say Google has been paying these carriers and companies through the profits generated from advertising. These payments come for devices and providers that support specific Google functionality, like search, Gmail, maps and others.

Meanwhile, Phone Scoop fired off e-mails to various cell phone providers and manufacturers, and nearly all of them answered in the same "we do not discuss our business agreements" style. How big of an impact could this whole to-do be making? Well, as we have seen, many new carriers and manufacturers are continuing to board the Android train, so the impact may be much larger then we will ever know. [MocoNews via Phone Scoop]

Sprint HTC Hero getting update on April 9th, is it Android 2.1 ?

22

Ah, the good ol' update about updates. How many times will we do this dance until we realize we're not getting anywhere? Well, this time around, it looks like the Sprint HTC Hero may receive an update on April 9th. Purported internal Sprint documents points as so, so who are we to disagree? Could the update be Android 2.1? Because we've been waiting quite a while for our HTC Heroes to get updated. Like since October. April 9th actually isn't too far around the corner, but since these dates are never set in stone we're not about to bet the house now.

The internal document above doesn't explicitly mention Android 2.1, which is obvious cause for concern, but maybe wishful thinking will cause it to magically appear? Yeah, probably not, but Sprint promised..

Motorola Droid's Android 2.1 update status updated on Facebook

24

Motorola Droid update status

Not much to say other than Motorola's still working on the Android 2.1 update for the Droid, but at least a Facebook update is better than nothing, right? For what it's worth, we pestered everybody we could at CTIA to try and get a better answer, but to no avail. Here's the full text of the facebook post:

We know you guys are anxiously awaiting the upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1. Ultimately, we want to ensure you have the best possible experience on your device; as a result, the rollout is taking longer than expected. Though we don't have the new deployment date to share just yet, we do promise we are working to get you updated information and will relay it as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience. We appreciate it

Hang in there, folks. [Facebook]

Motorola Droid makes guest appearance on Castle

castle

Sorry for all those who read Motorola Droid and thought we would be bringing you a 2.1 update, but life must go on. It is always fun to see your favorite smartphone make its way into a cast members hand on your favorite TV show, and this week made its way right into a scene or two of Castle on ABC. Have you seen any other Android appearances in other shows? If so, stop in the forums and let us know where! [thanks @videos4bb for the image]
