Motorola CEO talks future, including tablets and LTE

7

Sanjay Jha, the CEO of Motorola, spoke at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference, alluding to some of Motorola's future plans in regards to mobile. He confirmed that Motorola will be introducing 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, as well as focusing on different sectors with the upcoming devices. Jha not only wants to target retail, but the enterprise space as well.

Even though there are confirmed tablets coming from Motorola, Jha said that they would continue to focus on smartphones, both at the top-tier and mid-tier range. Might we see the Motorola Olympus soon?

He also confirmed that there will be a 4G LTE device "early next year."

Another interesting tidbit was that he mentioned that there will be a competitive change at Verizon Wireless early next year. Speculation points to the iPhone 4, which would definitely force enormous competition at Big Red.

Interesting comments from Jha. We already had speculation about much of this information, but it's always nice to hear it reinforced from the CEO. [BGR]

LG Optimus tweaks bring the Thunder to life [from the forums]

10

The fellows behind the ThundeROM for the LG Optimus have cranked things up a notch, and have the benchmarks to prove it.  They have edited, tweaked, and monkeyed the system and taken the Optimus from a good, entry-level Android smartphone to a pocketable  fire-breathing dragon that can hold it's own against most devices sold today.  You don't have to take my word for it, just head into the forums and have a look at the results -- results nobody would have though possible from a free (or almost free) Android phone.

Want Need your LG Optimus to sprout wings?  You can make it happen right here for the Optimus S, and here for the Optimus T.  [Android Central forums] Thanks KSmithInNY and Beezy!

A peek at the Logitech Revue recovery

5

We know, we know. You hackers and modders are itching to get a crack at the Logitech Revue Google TV set-top box. (There's even a $1,000 bounty out there to whomever gets third-party app access working.) A step on the path to proper hackery is seen above -- that's the Revue's recovery screen. Not a whole lot most of users can do with it, and @stericson, who posted the pics on Twitter, hasn't yet said how to get to recovery. But hacking of the Revue is well under way, folks. HTC releases Eclair source for Evo 4G

5

If you have a hankering for some Evo 4G Eclair source code (yeah, that's Android 2.1) for whatever reason, HTC's put it up on its dev site. Chances are most of us don't need this. But if you're in the minority, head on over and get your download on. [HTC Developer Center]

Man hospitalized after Droid 2 screen explodes in his ear

66

Imagine, if you will, walking down the road talking on your Droid 2 when all of a sudden you hear a loud pop in your ear and the next thing you know your ear is bleeding. Not a nice thought by any means but that's exactly what happened to Aron Embry from North Texas. As noted in the news report Aaron, was taken to the hospital for assessment where doctors determined that no hearing loss had taken place but four stiches were indeed needed due to the lacerations from the glass. Motorola has since issued a statement regarding the incident:

"Motorola's priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety. We will reach out to the consumer and investigate this thoroughly."

Now, despite Aaron having had this happen while using a Droid 2 we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that instances like this have actually become more occasional; it's not just with the Droid 2. Please, no comments about explosive Android sales folks, that's just bad. You may like to know though, the phone actually still works. You can check out the full video of the news report at the source link. Thanks SooperDooper! [WFAA]

New version of Android Market brings a new tab to apps

37

Looks like a new version of the Android Market is being silently pushed out to devices running Froyo, complete with a new tab to find related applications.  Yours may say "Similar" as it does on the Droid X in the shot to the left, or it may say "Related" as it does on the Evo 4G to the right.  For all intents and purposes, it appears to be the same thing with a different label.

While we can't see behind the curtain, it's pretty certain that there's more on the way, either with Gingerbread or as an addition to existing versions of Android. (And, yes, this looks like what we saw in that Gingerbread video earlier today.)

Anyone else out there seeing Market changes?  Sing out in the forums! Thanks, Andy, Javier, and Josh for the tips!

Flash Player 10.1.105.7 now available in the Android Market (just bugfixes)

17

If you've got Flash installed on your device you'll want to make sure you grab the latest update Adobe has just rolled out. v10.1.105.7 is now showing as available in the Android Market. We'd love to tell you from the changelog what, exactly, is new but since Adobe neglected to include one we were forced to ask them ourselves. Upon doing so we can now confirm that it's just a bug-fix release.

That all said, we'll use this space to make a plea to Android developers out there. If you update your app in the Market place and it's just bug fixes, let us know it's just bug fixes. Leaving your change log unchanged when changes have clearly been made is kind of frustrating. Even if it's just big fixes we'd like to know. It really is better to just say "bug fixes" than nothing at all. Rant over, hit the break for the latest Flash download.

SE Malaysia's Android-on-wheels ad campaign

0

In what's probably the best idea ever -- EVER! -- Sony Ericsson Malaysia has a new ad blitz going on to promote its upcoming Xperia event -- complete with a mobilized convoy of RC vehicles with the Android mascot at the wheel.  I'm pretty sure that a group of toy cars tooling around town will grab attention, especially from the kids.  SE is banking on the success of a similar promotion in France for the launch of the X10 mini, but with typical Far East flair device mock-ups have been replaced with the more eye catching green robot we all know and love.

Come on SE, let's see these in the Rose Bowl parade -- those Shriners need some competition.  Hit the source link for Sony Ericsson Malaysia's Facebook gallery.  [Facebook via SoyaCincau] Thanks, HadiP!
