Phone-maker Huawei and British retailer Carphone Warehouse have announced the UK launch of an entry-level Android handset, the Ascend Y300. Powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor with a 4-inch WVGA (480x800) display, a 5-megapixel camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Ascend Y300 doesn't offer outstanding specs -- although you are getting a relatively up-to-date version of Android.
But it's the price that's intended to turn heads, as Carphone Warehouse will sell the Y300 for as little as £59.95 on pre-pay. To qualify for this price, you'll need to be upgrading on a pre-paid plan; alternatively it's £69.95 for new PAYG customers, or free on contracts starting at £7.50 per month.
The Huawei Ascend Y300 will launch at Carphone Warehouse from tomorrow, Thursday June 6. Any takers?

London, UK, June 5, 2013: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announces its super-powerful entry-level Ascend Y300 smartphone will launch with Carphone Warehouse tomorrow (June 6). The Ascend Y300 will be available in black from £59.95 on prepay and from £7.50 per month on contract.
It represents the first Huawei-branded smartphone to go on sale with Carphone Warehouse, the UK’s biggest mobile phone retailer, and the first of a number of Huawei devices to launch with the retailer.
Rhys Saunders, UK Sales Director at Huawei Device, said: “The partnership with Carphone will help cement Huawei’s products and brand firmly in the British consciousness in the coming months. In the entry-level, the Ascend Y300 does not scrimp on anything. It combines hardware and features to deliver a compelling smartphone experience to a part of the market that has been under-served in the UK.”
Carl Cowling, Group Commercial Director at The Carphone Warehouse, said: "We're proud to bring Huawei phones into our range and see this partnership as a demonstration of our commitment to offering shoppers the best possible choice of devices and mobile deals. Such a high profile manufacturer coming into the UK market signals the start of a particularly interesting time for the mobile industry and will provide a boost to product innovation and competition.

The Huawei Ascend Y300 offers the best of both worlds – it's a powerful smartphone at an accessible price tag – and we're sure that it will be very popular with our customers."
The Ascend Y300 sits at the top-end of Huawei’s Y-series range of smartphones, targeted at the ‘youth’ market, as well as first and second-time smartphone users. Like all Huawei smartphones, the Ascend Y300 is built to bring users the very best technology and smartphone experience in its class.
With its combination of screen size, processing power and battery life, the Ascend Y300 is set to become the definitive smartphone in the entry-level category. Its 1GHz dual-core processor is fast enough to handle basic gaming and catch-up TV and its 4-inch screen makes such content really immersive.
The Ascend Y300 features Huawei’s own power saving technology to give power efficiencies of around 30% on a 1730mAh battery, keeping you powered up for longer. Its 5 megapixel cameracomes with auto-focus, flash, panorama function and video record at 30 frames per second.
The Ascend Y300 runs Android 4.1 Jellybean, giving access to hundreds of thousands of apps via the Google Play store. Huawei’s own Emotion UI features as well, which allows users to put their most important applications and content in one place on the home screen and offers a wide choice of themes to personalise their Ascend Y300 further.
The Huawei Ascend Y300 will be on sale with Carphone Warehouse in black from June 6. It will be available for £59.95 for customers upgrading on prepay, and for £69.95 for new prepay customers, inclusive of a £10 top-up. The Ascend Y300 will also be available from £7.50 per month on contract.
